Concert Review: Jesus and Mary Chain, May 23rd, Rotunda 3, KITEC, Hong Kong

Concert Review: Jesus and Mary Chain, May 23rd, Rotunda 3, KITEC, Hong Kong Playing essentially the same set list from their South By Southwest showcase, legendary Scottish band Jesus and Mary Chain played a show that illustrated perfect examples of what is best and worst about these types of reunions. The Jesus and Mary Chain played Rotunda 3 in the KowlownBay International Trade and Exhibition Centre, which is basically a glorified mall. In case you were wondering, Rotunda 3 is not the name of some cool bar, it's actually the third rotunda on the 6th floor of the building. It's essentially a circular hall used probably for trade shows. [...]

Crocodiles - "Endless Flowers" CD Review (Frenchkiss Records)

Crocodiles - "Endless Flowers" CD Review (Frenchkiss Records) You have to love a band like San Diego's Crocodiles for being able to channel their obvious influences (Jesus & Mary Chain / Echo & the Bunnymen / Spacemen 3) into creating a sound that mines this genre without sounding derivative. San Diego's Crocodiles are releasing their third disc, Endless Flowers , on June 5th on Frenchkiss Records which is a ten-track (42 minute) slab of psychedelic, fuzzed-out garage rock. Note: for vinyl junkies, there is a limited edition LP pressing on red/white marble vinyl available through Souterrain Transmissions' Web Store . Recorded in [...]

#393 The Jesus and Mary Chain – You Trip Me Up

#393 The Jesus and Mary Chain – You Trip Me Up I woke up from my Mondrian daydream to the unfettered sound of teenage lust/confusion wrapped in sweet screeching distorted guitars. Fuck yes, listening to this mesmerizing shit just brings us way back to when our younger, more impressionable selves first fell irreversibly in love with The Jesus and Mary Chain and their brand of combustible, abrasive yet melodic pop music. Something about their raw, unruly noise that romanticizes rebellion, the sonic equivalent of Bruce Davidson's 1959 Brooklyn Gang photography project. And when the Reid brothers start to play "You Trip Me Up" or any of the [...]

Nod Your Head: What We Talk About When We Talk About Le Pasión

Nod Your Head: What We Talk About When We Talk About Le Pasión I'm a lucky guy. At this year's South by Southwest, I had the chance to see The Jesus and Mary Chain's midnight gig at The Belmont . It was the perfect storm of intimate venue, sizable crowd, great weather, and the band being as witty and on the ball as possible. I can say without even a hint of dishonesty that I enjoyed the concert, but like so many other times, I didn't enjoy it the way I should have or with as much intensity. The whole time, I found myself obsessing over minute details: the distance [...]

Hopscotch 2012 Lineup Release!

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that last night I was anxiously watching Twitter for teasers and refreshing Hopscotch's homepage until midnight, when Hopscotch 20122s lineup was released. I read out loud the 175 bands to my roommates with the occasional (and frequent) yelps of joy. Headliners this year include The Roots, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Built to Spill (one of my personal favorite bands), Yo La Tengo, Liars, Sunn O))), and Zola Jesus. Some others that I'm excited about are Thee Oh Sees, Wye Oak, Deerhoof, The Mountain Goats, Versus, Exitmusix, Ducktails, Samantha [...]

Bloggy Goodness: Glen Hansard Goes Solo

Bloggy Goodness: Glen Hansard Goes Solo It's got to be good to be Glen Hansard these days. Over the last five-plus years, the Irish singer-songwriter starred in the critically acclaimed movie Once, won an Oscar for Best Original Song, toured relentlessly with The Swell Season, while concurrently being filmed for a documentary, and is now seeing his work on the big screen adapted into a Broadway musical. Hansard isn't slowing down either, as on June 19 he will release his solo debut Rhythm and Repose , via Anti- Records. Much like his Swell Season band mate Marketa Irglova's debut, Hansard's album was also inspired [...]

Watch: Indie Darlings Feist and M. Ward Play Jesus and Mary Chain Cover

Feist & M. Ward - Sometimes Always (Live @ Royal Albert Hall, London, 25/03/12)
At a recent show in London's Royal Albert Hall, Feist, and her current tour mate M. Ward, took the stage together to cover the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Sometimes Always." The song was the first single from the JAMC's fifth album Stoned and Dethroned. Originally a duet between Jim Reid and Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, the single had an alt-rock acoustic sound, which was newer territory for the brothers, but concurrent with the overall direction of Stoned and Dethroned. Video from an audience member captured the duet between Feist and M. Ward. Watch it below. (via Pitchfork) Listen to [...]

[SXSW] Jesus and Mary Chain @ the Belmont 3.15.12

This always happens to me. I see a classic band, they put on a great show and when it comes time to do a write-up of their performance... I completely choke. So in order to jump start this show review (and finish out my SXSW coverage) I'll just jump right in. Since this was my [...]

SxSW Pics: Jesus and Mary Chain @ The Belmont

SxSW Pics: Jesus and Mary Chain @ The Belmont Still more coverage of the conference left... Every SxSW, I like to pick a night to just camp out at a bigger venue and take in some stuff I may already know usually with the headliner that is trying to be cool. Duran Duran palyed last year's Wednesday line up at Stubb's that included Yuck and Rapheal Saadiq. I chose the Belmont on the Thursday night of the conference to catch The Jesus and Mary Chain with Cold Showers , Night Beats , (a band we shall ignore) and Titus Andronicus [...]
