This review runs live and in color on the Bowery Presents House List blog. Hayley Mary, the electric singer for the Australian four-piece the Jezabels, dressed all in black, demanded attention as the lights went down at The Bowery Ballroom just after dusk yesterday. As a part of the expansive Aussie BBQ, an event that brings together up-and-coming bands from Down Under, the Jezabels and Mary

With an amazing CMJ Buzzsession in our archives and a highly anticipated performance on our SXSW Outdoor Stage looming on the horizon, I simply had to catch The Jezabels (@thejezabels) in Brooklyn right before they jet down south for the Texas festivities. PopGun and The FADER sandwiched our fave Aussies in between Copehagen's Giana Factory and Still Corners of London, two awesome bands that were actually making their live US debut right then and there! But it was The Jezabels who projected triumphantly to [...]
In New York we're turning a corner. It's not nice out, just warmer. Heartbreaking London-based pop quartet Still Corners have never played in New York. Here's your chance to see them! These are the details:

Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]

We grew up ... the same way most people do I guess. Sam, Hayley and Heather started their lives in or around Byron Bay, on the North Coast of NSW. I was born and grew up in Southern California until I was fifteen when I moved to Australia. Now you can find us in ... Sydney. All of us ended up at the same university which is how all of this came about. By this time Heather and Hayley had been making music together for a while, and Sam had been jamming with them for half [...]

The Jezabels are an Australian band who have carved a considerable following for themselves in their native country, and listening to Mace Spray it is easy to understand why. They're female-led indie-pop is infectious with dark undertones, falling somewhere between Marina's Diamonds and Florence's Machine. It's the sort of music that, with a male vocal could become, perhaps, slightly heavy or intimidating, but with Hayley Mary's strong feminine voice, it is a song of passion & determination. Creating a wall of sound that never once overpowers or becomes simply noise, the music weaves effortlessly with lyrics and [...]

The Jezabels EP Dark Storm has been in solid rotation ever since it crossed my musical listening ears. Rightfully so because the thing is damn good. And I bring some good new for the US folks out there. They have just recently announced US tour dates that luckily include a stop in my lovely city of Boston. Singer Hayley Mary hits me deep. I can't shake the Kate Bush reference out of my head when I listen to them. But that sure as hell isn't a bad thing. Such a lovely voice that [...]

The Jezabels - Mace Spray VS. Wye Oak - Civilian Both of these songs have a raw power behind them, strong female vocals, and guitars and drums that are let loose near the end of the song. They are strikingly similar in intensity as well. I've been toying with listening to these songs one after another for a while and now they've become one in the same to me, they just fit together in overwhelming perfection. Not only do they compliment each other, but they are also two [...]

Warpaint Held in Brighton from 12 - 14 May, this year's Great Escape Festival will see performances from the likes of Twin Shadow , Warpaint , Seams, Visions of Trees and Friendly Fires . With more artists due to be announced, the line up is already shaping up nicely. Line-up announced so far: Friendly Fires Warpaint Twin Shadow Seams Teeth Visions of Trees D/R/U/G/S Becoming Real PVT [...]
If you haven't seen it already, you MUST check out this incredible short film that follows Danny MacAskill riding from Edinburgh back to his hometown of Dunvegan in the Isle of Skye. The two songs used in the video are "Wax and Wire" by Loch Lomond and "A Little Piece" by The Jezabels . This reminds me of when Mike Skinner walked from Dover, England to France:
Ah, the Extended Player, meatier than the single, more concise than the full-length. Whether as a stop-gap between albums, a medium for collaboration, or as an introductory work, the EP remains relevant, perhaps all the more with an increasingly ADHD-inflicted generation of music listeners. Whatever it is, we love them too, so here are some of our favorites. Bart & Friends - Make You Blush (Lost and Lonesome) A set of unexpected new material from twee-pop stalwart Bart Cummings (Cat's Miaow, the Shapiros), [...]
More lists aye? Well this is a fun Australian-wide radio voting system so it's a little different to the "top of 20103 round-up. Keeping in mind the "listenership" of Triple J, I usually vote with a little more thought as to what will already end up in the hottest 100 (rather than throwing my vote away on something obscure). This makes it easier to vote for only ten songs (the applied limit) in the sea of stuff I've been loving all year. Massive Attack - Paradise Circus Bag Raiders [...]
As is the custom in the indie rock universe in this coming second decade of the 21st century, it is not simply enough to know about something, you must know about it first. Furthermore, you must make outlandish predictions regarding the future success of said thing. In this case, it is music. In this case, it is 2011 and our predictions for the bands and artists who will be taking off wildly in
10. Crystal Castles - "Not In Love" [Ft. Robert Smith] Crystal Castles, mostly known for their ripping electoclash, found a slice of pop brilliance in 2010 with an assist from Robert Smith. "Not In Love" was rooted in a simple chorus of industrial synths and Smith's lithe, rye vocal modulating the title lyric. It was a cover of a Platinum Blonde original, but that robbed none of the
Best Songs / Best Albums / Best EP/73 While I'm completely aware that we filmed all of our videos in 2010, it seemed appropriate to share some of our favorites with you. The truth of the matter is that we love each and every video we shoot. We love all these artists, and love the time we spend with them brewing ideas, finding shooting locations, filming, and sometimes eating delicious food. This is a list of some of our favorites, but it's [...]
Big Scary's Tom Iansek didn't grow up around a lot of music. This is a curious shift from the norm, where musicians confidently express that their parents were creative impresarios, nurturing them to become the next Patti Smith or Mick Jagger. Iansek modestly shares, "I remember a patch of Enya and a bit of Mozart and Beethoven here or there but it was pretty sparse, musically. Because of that I've never been a big music listener and I'm only really just discovering artists now. Sometimes I just turn the radio off in the car because I prefer silence." This is [...]
After a ton of thought and internal bickering, we're finally releasing our year end lists. It took a good amount of time, and a lot of thought to figure all of this out, but I'm seriously happy with the lists we've put together. 2010 has been called a flop of a year for music, but when it comes to the EP/73 category, I really don't agree. The follow are 15 of our favorite EPs and 73 releases of the year. Keep in mind, this is just our opinion . Don't take it personal that your favorite artist isn't [...]

Much like Katy B from the other day, lead singer of The Jezabels , Hayley Mary, has an a unique style. Her simple all-black look isn't so much goth as it is 'greaser' or Courteney Cox in Born in the USA. The Jezabels don't need much visual fanfare, relying instead on a tight sound and musical chops. Great stuff.: The Jezabels: Mace [...]
