1. Jim Guthrie - So Small - intimacy. delicacy. aplomb. whimsy. harmony. eloquence. this one is for you, Jeff. Love you, buddy. [from Now, More than Ever | buy ] 2. Haywood - Plow - Wow, this song is 10 years old, a fact that I find easy and hard to believe simultaneously. I miss music like this. It's hard to believe I'm 29. This song is about plowing snow, but it doesn't have to say so lyrically for you to feel it. Maybe it's that Weakerthans-esque air lying coldly between [...]
It's nothing to get too excited over (unless you're Jim), but it's very cool to see Lil Wayne incorporating a composition by Jim Guthrie into one of his songs. Check out the Wayne/Guthrie comparison at Hip Hop Is Read

♫ Jim Guthrie - Lone Star The conception of the Sword & Sworcery LP - The Ballad of the Space Babies was a peculiar one. The LP was made almost exclusively for the Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP iOS game . In laymans's terms, Sword & Sworcery is both an audio visual gaming experiment and an LP. Jim Guthrie, the man behind the music side of the experiment, has been at this music thing for quite a while now. Being the gamer I am though, I of course [...]

Not sure I know exactly what's going on here, I guess Jim Guthrie did the soundtrack for an iPad game? Maybe? It's kind of a cool, Zelda-esque jam though, so I'm putting it up. MP3:: Jim Guthrie - Dark Flute WEB:: www.swordandsworcery.com

I'd heard a bit about the iPad game Sword & Sworcery and it seemed great. Really it made me want an iPad more than I already did. Then I heard that Royal City/Human Highway's Jim Guthrie did the soundtrack and I was sold. Well, not really on the game. Still no way to play that. [...]

The 2010-released When We Were Boys soundtrack is an extremely nice reminder that Jim Guthrie remains the understated, Canadian answer to Sufjan Stevens' often indulgent flights of fancy. It's mostly instrumental, but does offer some new vocal work - "If Chairs Were Bears" is miles better than the Islands-bro-damaged pop of 20082s Human Highway release, as is the upbeat "Trouble" and the early Death Cab gloom of "Sexy Drummer." Guthrie's best-of-decade -caliber Now, More Than Ever was reissued on vinyl last year, though I believe this release marks his first solo pop efforts [...]

December 4th was a holiday homecoming show for Ottawa's darling band The Acorn . The band was on their No Ghost Cottage tour. That tour started in September and the band traveled all across Canada, parts of USA and Europe. Luckily Ottawa was the final stop in their tour. It was a magical time for those who were in attendance. Also on the bill were Jim Guthrie and Pat Jordache . The show started off with [...]

Jim Guthrie's 2003 Owen Pallett-arranged classic Now, More Than Ever - Rawkblog's 33rd best album of the decade - has grown increasingly vital as Jim continues to stubbornly not make new albums for us to listen to. Luckily, 3 Syllables Records has reissued the set on 180 gram vinyl (with two bonus tracks) and on CD (with 12 (!?) bonus tracks). Unluckily, 3 Syllables Records is on the other side of the ocean and the exchange rate sucks. Buy it anyway (because you need to, seriously) right here . Jim Guthrie - [...]

Bil Zelman Having initially only announced tour dates in short, hesitant steps, Denton, Texas-based folk-pop revivalists Midlake have taken a deep breath, counted to ten, and slated an extensive North American tour in support of their new record The Courage Of Others . Though highly-anticipated, Courage is not drawing the sort of unanimous acclaim that its predecessor, 2006's The Trials Of Van Occupanther , did, with some finding its even gentler tone exquisite and others deming it narcoleptic. I [...]

Frank Yang In leading up to Friday night's show at Lee's Palace, I'd wondered aloud as to why it had taken The Wooden Sky so long to play a proper hometown show, what with their latest record, the ex If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone having come out all the way back in August. Walking into Lee's, I got my answer - they were building their sets. The stage was breathtakingly decorated with all manner of props and sculptures built of paperback [...]

Well, it's another rainy day in the northeast. It seems that we've been cursed with a sopping wet summer, but things could be worse. Waking up to the sound of pouring rain, I thought I'd put together a small mix of songs for a rainy day. These specific songs are pretty introverted and moody, for quiet mornings when you don't want to be bothered. I hope there's a few you like, and keep an eye out for more mini-mixes 'cause making this one was too much fun. Jeff Mangum - Engine [...]
