The deceivingly genteel folk-pop songs on Jim Hanft's new album "Weddings or Funerals" (out today) are, in a sense, a lot about getting somewhere, either physically ("Alternate Route") or romantically ("Lazy Love"). Singer-songwriter Jim Hanft's amiable folk music earned him a deal last year with Swedish imprint Veranda Records — and a trip to Stockholm in August to record with producer Lasse Marten, who has worked with Peter, Bjorn & John, Lykke Li, Kelly Clarkson and Pink, among others). Jim Hanft and his merry crew pull off alt-country-indie-folk-rock with Passenger Side. Upbeat and fun, this live studio performance rolls with a great vibe. You gotta check him out live - at Hotel Cafe in LA or on the other coast all through April. Hanft works a natural knack for reeling in the crowd, personally, one by one. Very good week of shows. Wednesday, we stopped by the SLL to get another taste of the glorious sounds of Glasser. We're still not sure if the duo is a side project of Big Search or if Big Search is a side project of Glasser, but they're both great. Americana's popularity has grown of late, and it suits indie-folk singer-songwriter Jim Hanft, who is friendly with fiddle atop his young musical storylines like ice cream over apple pie. Although the band numbered five, including sweet vocal harmonies from Sam, Jim's girlfriend's cousin (oh my), simplicity rules his tunes, highlighting Jim's creations which intelligently depict love and longing in mainstream, boyish terms. A pretty animated, socially extroverted character, Jim playfully and sarcastically commanded the room during his Luxury Wafers session.
