So here I am. Monday night. Not quite fully recovered from this weekend of weekends, but loving every minute of it. This entry will be "part 1". Ben Folds and Ryan Adams to follow. My fiance, Jess, and I finally got around to planning a trip from Providence to Philly, to visit my kid sister. Of course, being the music junkie that I am, I built the weekend trip around some pretty good music. My Morning Jacket were playing at Festival Pier Friday night, so, sensing my desire to go, my sister bought 3 tickets [...]

God, I get the best emails sometimes. Like the one passed on to me from the St. Louis-based American Mustache Institute , who recently interviewed My Morning Jacket 's Jim James. The link to the interview is HERE ; scroll down to August 2008, past a Q&A with fellow 'stache cultivator Mike Schmidt. A few highlights: Q: Jim, thank you for speaking with the American Mustache Institute. So lately you've shaved the beard and gone with the solo mustache – [...]

Maybe I'm a little late to the party on this news, but I just heard about it tonight and it made my ears moist. As reported here and here , the three are currently recording an album together. Release date is unknown, but we'll keep you posted. While I'm not a huge Conor Oberst fan, I'm a big Jimmy James and M. Ward fan and can't think of two guys I'd rather see put something out together (unfortunately I missed their "Monsters of Folk" tour of 2004, but here's a full set from our friends [...]
For a long time I've been terribly depressed that I had never seen My Morning Jacket live, but for a long time that wasn't my fault. The band just never seemed to have a tour that included Kansas City. Last February, I was given a small taste of the amazingness that is Jim James when [...]

Saw this on pop candy , thought it was pretty badass... that's jim jame son the balcony to the right
Ten Thousand people showed up to Louisville's Waterfront Park to see, better yet, experience My Morning Jacket play three solid hours of rock (see the ridiculous set list below). The air was cool and the sky was clear and bright orange, until the night became illuminated by a full moon. The stage was set up directly between the crowd and the water to allow for a perfect backdrop to the show. While MMJ didn't get to ride in on the Belle of Louisville like they wanted to, they still provided their fans an epic performance and showed [...]

" I Had A Rough Night And I Hate The Fuckin' Eagles, Man!" The Dude - Big Lebowski Jim James had this to say about the album Laid , by the group James. "It's kind of a masterpiece. An incredibly varied record -subliminal but passionate at the same time. The reverb and the textures were really influential on us when we were first starting out. My favorite records are the ones that are almost like a painting, where you stop hearing the [...]
This week, a band that needs no real introduction at all, Louisville's My Morning Jacket , Takes 5 for Kentucky. MMJ is touted as one of the most important bands to music today by critics and fans alike, which is evidenced by getting perhaps the biggest gig possible - Madison Square Gardens for New Years Eve 2008/2009. It looks like the rest of the world has come to fully appreciate what Louisville has known for several years. These Louisville natives have played sold out venues all over the world, as well as appearances on shows [...]

Yesterday Scotty gave us the first part of his three part Newport review, but Luke Sacks also attended Saturday's festivities and offers his opinion: The Newport Folk Festival holds a special place in the history of rock and roll and conjures up some great imagery. After all, Bob Dylan plugged in and changed the course of music forever at the festival back in 1965. Dylan was almost booed off the stage during his performance that year but since then, the music landscape, and that of the festival, which has been around since 1959, have both changed [...]
Last night was my two year anniversary and we've got a sick infant at home, so the blog may suffer from a lack of creativity this week. Luckily other blogs are putting out stellar content. Sound on the Sound tipped me off to Fleet Foxes performance on Letterman. It took me several months, but I now see what all the fuss is about. I can't wait to see them at the Treasure Island Festival . Joe at Each Note Secure posted a new track from [...]

jim james played a pretty fetching (mostly) solo acoustic set at the newport folk festival last weekend - he was joined, for a song or three, by m. ward - and we have the audio for you below. james is one of our personal favorite vocalists & musicians and we're sure you won't be disappointed by this performance. (see the festival write-up at aquarium drunkard for confirmation of james's place in the weekend's pecking order.) also, be sure to have a listen to james's cover of gil scott-heron 's "when you are who you are," which [...]
NPRMusic has some good things on it today. 1. Jim James playing at the newport Folk Festival playing acoustic solo with a little help from M. Ward. 2. Spiritualized , live full concert at the 9:30 club from July 25th. 3. Tom Waits live in Athens, GA 4. The Duke Spirit live on WXPN , whom we saw give an awesome performance at ottobar last ngiht (review to come shortly)
Whereas parts of Jim James solo set at Newport gave way to Evil Urges – a quiet "Sec Walkin'," and a peaceful "Look at You," among others — it was Z's "It Beats 4 U" that stole the show. While he fingerpicked a spiny melody and the rooftop rain slowed to a patter, James [...]

I'm too exhausted to get into a review, but let's just say it's exactly what you'd expect from a Trey solo acoustic set. Good songs, no jams and a shiny/happy Trey assuring us all is well in the world: Brian and Robert, Farmhouse, Water In The Sky, Let Me Lie, Bouncin' Around The Room, Heavy Things, [...] I'm too exhausted to get into a review, but let's just say it's exactly what you'd expect from a Trey solo acoustic set. A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon an article on Great Britain's leading entertainment website, the Independent. For those of you who don't know, Monsters of Folk was a touring stage trio from 2004, who didn't make any albums, and played only a few shows. So why is it significant that they are planning a 2009 reunion tour? Well, because the Monsters of Folk trio consists of folk legend Conor Oberst , guitar god M. Ward and upcoming University of Iowa philanthropist Jim James , of My Morning Jacket fame... [...]
Generally, when a band announces they're in the preliminary stages of a new album, two types of reactions result. One is from the fanboys, who gobble up every little detail you get. The others is from the pessimist, who responds, "get back to me when there is actually a release date." But when it comes to news of a new My Morning Jacket album, most will stop to listen, regardless of the depth of the details. Besides, after 2007's much-acclaimed Evil Urges and their epic performance at last [...]

My Morning Jacket have begun working on their sixth album, the follow-up to ' Evil Urges ' which was release just last month. Speaking to BBC 6music , frontman Jim James said he was currently writing new material for the bands next album. "I'm already writing songs for the new record and stuff," he said. "The process is weird because whenever we make a record, the songs come from one or two years of life that you've lived. Then by the time you get to make that record you're in that zone but when it comes [...]
