My Morning Jacket' s much anticipated sixth studio album is set for release later next year. Speaking to Rolling Stone frontman Jim James revealed that the new album would be released in May of next year. "Mid-next year, probably May. I'm really excited," said the frontman. "It's all live, so the vibe is really, really good, really wholesome. There's something about it," he added. The forthcoming album is the follow-up to 2008's ' Evil Urges '.

With a seemingly rotating door on music festivals over the last handful of years it's assuring to know that you can continually count on the Newport Folk Festival to be there year in and year out, offering up a high quality and diverse lineup in one of the most serene settings imaginable. Returning once again to the historic Fort Adams State Park, the fest delivered an amazing swath of artists from folk to funk and everything in between. Much like how there are those musicians that are referred to as a [...]

George Wein's Newport Folk Festival is not like most American music festivals. While its predominant purpose is to showcase a collection of noteworthy acts for its patrons, like most music festivals, there are certainly a few things that set it apart from the stinky, sweaty, drug-filled cesspools that also fall into the category. Perhaps it has something to do with the FOLK of it all. After all, folk music generally draws a pretty homogeneous group of, well... folks. These people are commonly mellow, much like the music they listen to. They want nothing [...]

If you're reading this review, chances are you've rocked a festival in your day. So I'll ask you what I asked myself today: what factors make up the perfect festival? Saturday at Newport Folk Festival was close enough to perfection to get me to start pondering the question. Great bands, chill crowds, minimal hassle and lines, perfect weather, scenic backdrop, stages you can easily transfer between but that don't have any sound overlap, craft beers, and at least one chicken souvlaki vendor. Yup, it was tough to go wrong at Newport Folk Festival! [...]

Next weekend the granddaddy of all music fests - the Newport Folk Festival - will kick off with three days of roots, folk and Americana music that this year will open on Friday night with a night of "banjo and bluegrass" at the International Tennis Hall Of Fame, before moving to the festival grounds at the historic Fort Adams State Park for two days full of music. Founded in 1959 by George Wein as an offshoot of his already highly successful and well-established Jazz [...]

To begin their encore, The Blind Boys of Alabama entreated the Lincoln Center in that familiar melody, "People get ready, there's a train a 'comin/You don't need no baggage, you just get on board." Such was the transcendent undercurrent that ran through the entirety of the evening's music, which featured gospel standards, spirituals, and original numbers from Jim James , Yo La Tengo , Lambchop , and Exene Cervenka . The swank and generally middle-aged audience exchanged a glance or two when the self-proclaimed "afrofuturist" Sun [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Canada Roots drummer, producer and musical director Amir " ?uestlove " Thompson is an inveterate multitasker. Tuesday night at the Toronto Jazz Festival media compound, he took a few minutes out from prepping for his band's sold-out show to chat, as he semi-apologetically checked his Blackberry. One could assume that he was going through his electronic Rolodex, lining up more and more collaborations. As the house band on ' Late Night With Jimmy [...]

Philadelphia hip-hop veterans/innovators, The Roots , have released a music video for the first single off of their recently released ninth studio album, How I Got Over . "Dear God 2.03 features Monsters of Folk and My Morning Jacket vocalist Jim James on the hook, a nod to the Monsters of Folk "Dear God" single from their self-titled album. Watch "Dear God 2.03 here: Listen to and download the track here:

Yim Yames' record label, Removador Records and Solutions, released the debut album of producer Alexander Smith, under the moniker Lydia Burrel. I haven't heard the album but My Morning's Jacket's frontman is known for championing great music by under appreciated artists. Here's some of what the press release said: The album is a juxtaposition of richly detailed electronic production and his earnest voice. Aside from recording and production assistance [...]
Of all the music released in the last year I would have pegged tracks from Monsters of Folk pretty low as probable remix targets, and yet, here we are with the second run at "Dear God," this one from Busdriver.
Following the dark overtones of 2008's "Rising Down," The Legendary Roots Crew have returned with "How I Got Over," a record that reexamines the bleak state of our culture, this time striving to find a glimmer of hope amongst the darkness.
The Roots' Black Thought plays a modern day Travis Bickle in their new video for "Dear God 2.0." Like De Niro's famed Taxi Driver character, he drives around the city, ferrying a menagerie of low-lifes and tragic characters to their destinations. All the while, he's busy lamenting the fact that God's not returning his (or anyone else's) calls. Jim James adds the same soulful refrain as the original Monsters Of Folk track from the backseat. Quality video, but it pains us to see ?uestlove so dour. Feels like something is not right with the world. (Via: Vulture [...]

After months of delays The Roots will finally drop their ninth studio album, How I Got Over, tomorrow via Def Jam. Last week the Philly hip-hop group , pulled double duty on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, serving as the musical guest in addition to their full time gig as house band. Black Thought, ?uestlove & Co. pulled out all the stops for their performance of Dear God 2.0 being backed by a not only a full string section and back-up singers, but also by Mr. Yim Yames himself to provide the track's [...]
Congrats to Questo for parlaying all the indie love he espouses into contributions from a number of notable artists for The Roots' latest, How I G0t Over , the first of theirs I've been excited about since Phrenology . Yim Yames helps out here for "Dear God 2.0." How I Got Over is out on Tuesday (6/22) from Def Jam and features contributions most notably from Monsters of Folk, the ladies of Dirty Projectors (but of course), and Joanna Newsom.
It seemed like the worst career move imaginable when it was announced that The Roots would be the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon . Not only was it a talk show that ran at 12:30 in the morning, but I don't think very many people expected Fallon to be the least bit entertaining. But, somehow, Late Night has become the most musically daring and in-touch network talk show, ever. Who knows how much, if any, of a part The Roots play in the expansive musical knowledge and taste the show displays on [...]
