OK, I am in class right now.; but we've been debating what criteria determine which social customs are going to be legally protected in court and I've already stated and defended my point. Now my classmates are arguing what the civil war was about. Duh, state rights. So most of you know I either download music or buy it from dollar bins at Reckless and Half Price Books. My favorite in the first category is the new Cloud Nothings album, produced by Steve Albini and one of the best albums I've [...]

Bill Wells - Lemondale By Steve McGillivray It's probable that most people will come to Bill Wells on the back of last year's collaboration with Aidan Moffat. In my humble opinion the pair released the best album of 2011 with Everything's Getting Older . Wells handled the compositions, marrying them to Moffat's dour outlook on life and together they released something bordering on genius. For his next project, Wells headed out to Japan to try and bring together elements of the experimental scene with his own vision and produce [...]
Last month, the increasingly elusive avant-garde master Jim O'Rourke, now rocking an impressive crazy-old-man beard, played a few songs for onlookers at Dyson Lab Ginza, in his adopted hometown of Tokyo. Below, we've got two videos of him playing two sprawling acoustic-guitar instrumentals, both of them taken from his 1997 album Bad Timing . Below, check out the mesmeric things that the man can do with one acoustic guitar and a few foot pedals. Read More...

We first picked up Jim O'Rourke 's 2009 record The Visitor for largely ancillary reasons to the music itself. First, we admired his work with Wilco so readily, we figured there had to be something rewarding in his own output. Second, the record is somewhat unusual in that it was never released in mp3, by O'Rourke's choice. It was only released on CD and vinyl, and required (gasp) actual physical interaction. The result was that two years ago, we picked up a thick slab of vinyl [...]

With the future of Sonic Youth uncertain beyond this weekend , guitarist Lee Ranaldo has announced plans for his first song-based solo album, Between the Times & the Tides . Due for release on March 20th via Matador, the album features contributions from current Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, former Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert, Wilco's Nels Cline, Jim O'Rourke, Irwin Menkin, Alan Licht, and John Medeski. On December 16th, Ranaldo will perform with Licht, Shelley, and Menkin at Brooklyn's Glasslands. Additional tour dates are planned for 2012.

some pounding shrieking ungrooves from jim o'rourke & masaya nakahara as the titularly lolsome suicidal 10cc. never understood how o'rourke came to be involved in sonic youth's snoozey beige period... With a Webster's Dictionary definition like "of or relating to an intelligentsia that develops new or experimental concepts, especially in the arts", it's no wonder so many musicians get blindly lost in the unavoidable pretention of being "avant-garde". Some musicians spend their entire lives attempting to meet the aims of that definition, and are accountable for the merits, importance, detractions and drawback of such a paradoxically narrow-minded approach to music-making. More interesting though are the artists who – though generally working within the confines of mainstream music – take the occasional mental and intellectual vacation with an overly-indulgent avant-garde side [...]

[The New Classics is a reoccurring segment in which we examine our favorite indie releases that are bound to replace our parent's "classic rock" stash hidden in the attic or the basement. These aren't reviews, these are unedited testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Can we get a witness?] Album: Murray Street Artist: Sonic Youth Released: June 25, 2002 [...]

It has been over a decade since The Thing formed, assimilating the combined talents of Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and Paal Nilssen-Love. They were named not after the John Carpenter horror film, but instead after a Don Cherry composition of the same name. They made an immediate impact with their self-titled debut album of Don Cherry covers, with the rhythm section of Håker Flaten on bass and Nilssen-Love on drums showing themselves to be one of the tightest units out there, and Gustafsson taking extended saxophone technique and then extending it some more. Eagle-Eye Cherry commented on hearing this [...]
As Jim O'Rourke showcased on Insignificance and the Halfway to a Threeway EP, among other releases, he is an incisive and all-but-unmatched songwriter; why he chooses to spend so much of his time building unfathomable drones is beyond me. But watching this will give you at least an idea of the man at work, as well as showcasing a flawlessly preserved circa-2002 "sensitive Decemberists fan" wardrobe. (Via @twentyfourbit )

Jim O'Rourke — Memory Lame From Insignificance ( Drag City ; 2001) These things I say may seem to offend / But not half as much as I'd like to intend
Crawdaddy! offers a primer to the music of Jim O'Rourke . Out of Print is now selling literary iPhone cases. Albert Brooks talks to the New York Times about his debut novel, 2030: The Real Story of What Happens to America . Felice Brothers guitarist Ian Felice talks to the Capital Times [...]
Editions Mego has been putting out some impressive material of late, including the Emeralds and Oneohtrix Point Never albums that gained high placings on many year-end charts in 2010. Their latest project is from former Sonic Youth member Jim O'Rourke, who is set to release a series of vinyl-only albums for the label. The series will be titled "Old News" and will essentially be made up of "analogue synth and tape works (both studio and live) from the depths of Jim O'Rourke's archive." In typically obtuse fashion, the first release will be title Old News #5 , which will [...]

Words by Rick Molsen If you're like me, you love going to the bar to talk about your favorite music. If you're not like me, that probably means you're at a bar because you have an actual date (ouch). Even if you're not at a pub reading this from your iPhone, feel free to crack open a beer and drink up as we talk about independent record labels a bit. They're not only businesses, but they act as a predominant way of discovering new music, because let's face it, if a label signs a [...]
And now for some links that caught my eye today… Jim O'Rourke has not only been producing Burt Bacharach tribute records in Japan, but he's been performing numerous intimate experimental gigs and taking vocal lessons live on television , as well. Speaking of the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot co-producer, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy will rock for former White House Chief of Staff and current Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel at a fundraiser in Chicago . Radiohead guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood [...]
