I had heard a lot about Jim Sullivan's UFO before Light in the Attic's 2010 reissue and jumped at the chance to finally get my hands on a copy. While I still think it deserved to win our poll of the best reissues from 2010 , I haven't delved into the record enough to have something worthwhile to say about it. Instead, I've let it slowly seep into my awareness, repeatedly playing it in the background, very slowly [...]
"Highways" is the centerpiece of U.F.O., the absolutely stunning Jim Sullivan record that the oft-excellent Light In The Attic recently re-issued. Start with the back story: For an extensive, informative, and thoroughly riveting version of the tale, look no further than Aquarium Drunkard. If you don't have the time however, here's the gist: Jim Sullivan [...]
Instead of a traditional Sunday Mix Tape this week, I'm going to highlight more great albums which were released in 2010. The one caveat here is that these are all albums which were reissued this past year. Or last year. Weird…two days ago I was saying "this past year" and now I have to say "last year" to not be considered retarded. There were plenty of great albums reissued in 2010. And a lot of them were more modern re-pressings, which I don't care for at all (really? Another limited-edition Group re-press? Ugh!). I'm [...]

In March 1975, folk singer Jim Sullivan drove into the New Mexico desert and disappeared forever. Days after he was reported missing, police found his car abandoned in the middle of nowhere. His guitar, wallet, luggage and datebooks were still inside, along with a few copies of one of his last releases, U.F.O. , a one shot deal for a small record company called Monnie. This record has been notoriously difficult to find and has acquired a cult following among purveyors of pop music ephemera. This month, Jim Sullivan [...]
They say those who ignore history are bound to repeat it. In music, however, those who pay attention to history seem just as likely to repeat it. So here's a bunch of new versions of things that are worth ripping off. The percentage of previously unreleased material (as well as packaging, liner notes, etc) certainly factored into what made this list, and the order as much as the quality of the original work. 1. Jim Sullivan - Highways Jim Sullivan was never a big name but was always on the edge of success and in 1969 released UFO which was meant to be his break through album. 6 years later after not having the results he wanted in LA, he left his wife and kid to try to make it in Nashville. After checking into a hotel in New Mexico, he was never seen again. His car was found 22 miles away abandoned. UFO is a really amazingly haunting album with Phil Spector's session players, The Wrecking Crew. The album [...]

Light in the Attic might just be the greatest label operating in the world right now; unconcerned with current bands and trends, its aim is to rummage through the dustier corners of bargain bins and studio vaults, and bring forgotten gems back into the public consciousness with informative sleevenotes and a bunch of bonus material, none of which detracts from the original artefacts. Last year, it gave Serge Gainsbourg's peerless masterpiece Histoire de Melody Nelson its first American release, as well as reprinting the debut album from oft-sampled but never-reissued politico-soul man Lou Bond. Their latest trick, however, [...]

A couple of choice reissues for your perusal; Ruth's 'Polaroid/Roman/Photo' recently resurfaced as part of the 80's synthwave/dark pop revival. The record only sold 50 copies when first released in 1985, it's now become a rare collectors item and will set you back over 300 notes. The Angular Recording Corporation have done us all a favour and given the record a much needed reissue. Pick it up at Boomkat . (Download) The Light in the Attic label are also doing a fine job in unearthing long lost [...]

jim sullivan - "highways" (download) From Jim Sullivan 's "lost psych masterpiece" UFO , which was recently reissued by the always-impressive Light In the Attic label (home to Rodriguez , The Monks , Kris Kristofferson and Cat Stevens reissues). The fascinating thing is that Jim Sullivan mysteriously disappeared outside Santa Rose, New Mexico in 1975 after recording this album. His VW Bug was found, and his hotel room was left [...]

As the 2010 new releases tap dries up, Drake reviews a couple of reissued gems. -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 11.16.10 The list for new releases shrinks as the compilations, box sets and reissues pile grows and grows. Bruce Springsteen's The Promise would make a great gift, as would the lovingly packaged reissue of Jim Sullivan's U.F.O. . When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be... don't let it fall on me. Last June, over a round of drinks, my friend Matt excitedly told me the tale of his label Light In The Attic's upcoming release; that of the reissue of Jim Sullivan's U.F.O. Whereas Light In The Attic often reissues the lost and forgotten LP, in the case of U.F.O. it was the very performer who [...]
• New Jersey has a new celebrity living within its borders. The World's Ugliest Dog -- a two-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix -- resides in Sewell. This is by far the grossest thing I have laid eyes on in quite some time (and I saw a picture of Kirsten Dunst in a magazine last week when I was at the supermarket). The thing can barely open its eyes, it's tongue is way to big for its mouth, and it's hairless except for a grey mohawk. It looks like a shaved sewer rat with cancer. Why hasn't this thing been [...]
