I remember in college briefly being into a lot of those Southern gothy bands — the ones that mixed weird and surreal/apocalyptic religious imagery with ramshackle percussive sounds that sounded like an increasingly second-hand approximation of Tom Waits's '80s albums. That approach is legit enough, but it wasn't really a good look for me. Jim White has turned out to be one of the more durable of those dudes, and listening to his debut album again, I'm pleasantly surprised at how nicely it fits these hazy heatwave days. This tune is an interesting cocktail of apocalyptic visions in a cool [...]
This is the first in an occasional series of features where one of our writers reflects on their five favourite tracks by a particular artist. Here, Greg Salter kicks things off with Cat Power , who recently announced that her new record, Sun , is due on Matador in September. ‘Cross Bones Style’, from Moon Pix , 1998 ‘Cross Bones Style’ is probably the most accessible moment on Moon Pix , Chan Marshall’s absorbing, meditative, dark and best album (not a difficult task, admittedly). [...]
photo by Brittney Bollay This week starts off with a bang with a show by the hugely popular Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men , at Showbox Sodo. If you're a KEXP listener you know just how much we love this great Icelandic band. This is a can't miss! Speaking of can't misses, on Tuesday, THEESatisfaction is giving a free performance at the Queen Anne Easy Street Records, Point Juncture WA is at the Comet Tavern, and Poor Moon is at the Tractor with Lost In The Trees and [...]
Dipping out of the gritted-toothed discord of Grinderman to return to avant-garde instrumental outfit Dirty Three , multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis reconvened with guitarist Mick Turner and drummer man Jim White over yonder atop Antipodean isles to cobble together Toward The Low Sun, the Australian trio's ninth and, hush hush, highly plausibly finest studio long-player to date. Once upon a time there were inspirational minstrels from Melbourne – one with half a bear of a beard dangling from his chin – who ignited every ear their melancholia touched. Then one day things got [...]
I've got a man crush on Warren Ellis. Not afraid to admit it either, though I'd like to think it has nothing to do with his homeless chic get up! It's that he manages to get a completely unique sound from his violin. It wouldn't sound the same if anyone else picked it up. Apart from keeping busy playing with the Bad Seeds and Grinderman, Ellis has rejoined Dirty Three band mates Mick Turner and Jim White for a new record. The original Melbourne-based instrumental trio have released 'Toward The Low Sun' featuring the desolate 'Moon On The [...]
Was this ever destined to be an album of heartbreak – an album filled with the raw emotion of having to cope with love leaving? Sure, White had to endure the devastation of seeing his wife walking out on him – for a younger man – while Where It Hits You was being made. But the title had already been chosen, the songs written (many of which were for his estranged wife), before that happened. And what we’re left with is an album where, more than often, the performance battles against the writing. But instead of destroying [...]
Happy Presidents Day week, everybody. A commanding list of new releases awaits you in stores today. Among them is the latest by our recent guest and longtime friend of KEXP, Damien Jurado , whose Maraqopa would be good enough to get him elected President of Seattle if there were such a thing. Our Music Director, Don Yates, says the new album "sounds like nothing else in Jurado’s illustrious catalog. It’s a dynamic and expansive set of adventurous psych-folk with a variety of haunting, well-crafted songs featuring trippy guitar work, atmospheric keyboards, swelling strings and various [...]
Backtrack: Jim White & Nina Nastasia You Follow Me
Writing about Jim White's drumming is difficult. Last week, I covered Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power's seminal Moon Pix , an album that benefits as much from her willingness to embrace her own demons as it does from Jim White's free drumming, which exists as a counterpoint to Marshall's controlled fury and desolate sadness. Crime & the City Solution 'American Twilight' -- 47 Second Album Review
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases , 47 Second Review Mute That the bristling gloom-rock of Crime & the City Solution sounds like Nick Cave in both relentless musical push and lyrical intensity is no accident. The often-dormant Australian band can boast direct lineal connections to the Birthday Party and new album American Twilight , the band's first in 13 years, fairly matches [...]

10 Contemporary Alt-Country Bands You Should Know
Alt-country (or Americana, if you must) was all over the music press in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with Uncut magazine, in particular, making the genre its de facto in-house sound. Since then, its visibility has faded somewhat, but the quality of the music hasn't suffered — while the work of artists like Lambchop, Jason Lytle and Grandaddy (who've recently reunited — yay!), Wilco, Calexico, Iron & Wine, Mark Kozelek et al remains well-renowned, there are plenty of other artists similarly deserving of your attention. We've rounded up a selection of such musicians after the jump. Do let [...]

Jim White – Chase the Dark Away (Best Fit Session)
To many fans of modern Americana, Jim White occupies a very unique and deserving space. Arguably as interesting as a human being as he is an artist, Jim has channelled a lifetime of experience into songwriting and performing. His well documented and oft-repeated biography lists stints as a model, surfer, preacher, cab driver and filmmaker. Latest record Where it Hits You was, like so many, born out of adversity - breakups with his label (and wife) were channelled into the Kickstarter -funded long player, which was released earlier this year by [...]
