YACHT, ONUINU, KEY LOSERS ( Mississippi Studios , 3939 N Mississippi) It's hard to go wrong with YACHT! The electro dance-rock band and belief system known as YACHT brings every platinum-haired, gender androgynous, genuinely cool person down to the dance floor. Sweaty conversations about magick ensue. SUZETTE SMITH LEIGH MARBLE, THE ASCETIC JUNKIES, KELLY ANNE MASIGAT ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) Cancer is enough to throw a pall over any artistic endeavor, [...]

Jim White - State Of Grace

Dipping out of the gritted-toothed discord of Grinderman to return to avant-garde instrumental outfit Dirty Three , multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis reconvened with guitarist Mick Turner and drummer man Jim White over yonder atop Antipodean isles to cobble together Toward The Low Sun, the Australian trio's ninth and, hush hush, highly plausibly finest studio long-player to date. Once upon a time there were inspirational minstrels from Melbourne – one with half a bear of a beard dangling from his chin – who ignited every ear their melancholia touched. Then one day things got [...]

Was this ever destined to be an album of heartbreak – an album filled with the raw emotion of having to cope with love leaving? Sure, White had to endure the devastation of seeing his wife walking out on him – for a younger man – while Where It Hits You was being made. But the title had already been chosen, the songs written (many of which were for his estranged wife), before that happened. And what we're left with is an album where, more than often, the performance battles against the writing. But instead of destroying [...]

Happy Presidents Day week, everybody. A commanding list of new releases awaits you in stores today. Among them is the latest by our recent guest and longtime friend of KEXP, Damien Jurado , whose Maraqopa would be good enough to get him elected President of Seattle if there were such a thing. Our Music Director, Don Yates, says the new album "sounds like nothing else in Jurado's illustrious catalog. It's a dynamic and expansive set of adventurous psych-folk with a variety of haunting, well-crafted songs featuring trippy guitar work, atmospheric keyboards, swelling strings and various [...]
There's a coherent view presented here, but it's not one that ever lets the listener feel too stable. "Chase the Dark Away" provides Jim White's Where It Hits You with as emblematic an opening as it could have, assuming you don't count simply reading this first song in the tracklist. It has the haunting sort of Americana sound that White's created throughout his career, but White's resisting the pull of the dark. Across five meditative minutes, White and his bandmates build a platform for a new outlook, using the lyrics both with and...

Jim White - Infinite Mind
There's a key moment in Jim White's fifth and latest LP, Where It Hits You, where the album pushes itself into emotional depths only hinted at in its opening sections. When the marching-band tempo of "Here We Go!" roils to a close, "My Brother's Keeper" kicks off the back third of the record and for [...]
Nearly five years is a long time to wait, but it's been that long since Jim White's last official LP. Though he released a live EP and a soundtrack for a play in the meantime, it's been a tumultuous span of time - White left Luaka Bop, the label that had been his home since [...]

Jim White is an interesting character. Having severed his ties with David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, he has funded the release of this new album by embarking on a Kickstarter campaign in which he offered backers deluxe editions for their dollars in advance, as well as an expensive yard-clearing, lawn-mowing service coupled with a performance in your home, for those who paid the premium amounts. Well, that fundraising has worked because Where It Hits You is here, lavishly recorded in Athens, Georgia with a huge range of musicians and released in many different editions. [...]

Irrespective of the continued entanglement of the various ones of the Dirty Three with a contemporary artistic conscience (paths have previously led to painting, Peej and Ally Pally ), their collective presence has been gravely missed. Six years, three months, and a further six days have passed since the release of Cinder, a nimble-fingered beast of gentle disposition, one capable of untangling the most obstinate of emotional knots and although perhaps not a direct consequence of their absence, times since they've been a-troublin'. However next month, quite fortuitously for anyone and everyone feeling fragile around [...]
Jim White - Stranger Candy PSL | Myspace Video

[There's plenty of great Christmas songs out there, but most suffer terribly from over-exposure. To remedy that, EbM presents a selection of alternative Christmas songs .] Long and slow, yet haunting and atmospheric, this track is one of Jim White 's best. In fact, No Such Place - the album this song was taken from - is a genuine classic, the overall strength of which means Christmas Day is often pushed into the shadows, and it's only at this time of [...]
