I guess today is another one of those two-update days. Aren't you readers lucky? Both music related! I guess I'm finally living up to my billing as a music blogger? The thought of it might be sickening, sure, but the reality is that I try to spend as little time writing about music as a music nerd possibly can. I don't want to bore anyone. With that in mind, here's another music related entry. A mix tape! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be [...]

Allow me to don the cap of sports fan for one day, if you will. Last night's Angels/Yankees game was by far the best baseball I think I've ever seen. I can't recall ever going to a Mets games when they were actually good. I didn't go to any games last year, which was their best season in maybe a decade. I certainly don't remember the game I went to in 1988, which was the last time before 2006 when they won their division. Plus, the Mets never win when I see them in person. Sure, they beat the Cubs [...]

I saw this story in this morning's New York Times and felt a little bit of – I don't know if nostalgia is the right word since I've never been there – but maybe the sense of the passing of yet another rock and roll landmark. BETHEL, N.Y., Aug. 9 — Inside an old wood-beamed farmhouse with picture windows on a hillside here, the chirp of the telephone pierced the air roughly every five minutes Thursday morning with another inquiry about [...]

Hey it's still summertime right? So there's no reason to turn down the Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows abounding out here on the edge of the interwebs is there? I think that those three nouns will be our topics today... So sunshine... that's easy...most people are familiar with it. I myself even see it on occasion. Here's a few "sunny" tunes that explore this fascinating subject, or "Sol" music if you will Jimi Hendrix - Sunshine Of Your Love [...]

This blog post begins a series looking at the great debates in history. For example, which movie is better: The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi ? I was outraged to discover that my comrades at work think that Jedi is better. They are just wrong. Empire is the superior movie in every aspect. I know this is a subject of intense debates. It keeps people like this guy up at night. What a [...]

I Missed Again The sceptics among you will automatically believe (from the title that is) that the Vicar has gone completely doo lally and admitted to a secret past of Phil Collins albums amongst the varied detritus of his past (maybe or maybe not). But the reality is shamefully in the present. Yet again I have failed in my task of getting on the contrast podcast and I am peeved. This is, of course, completely my fault as yet again I spend the entire week 'umming' and 'aahhing' [...]

Yesterday was the 4th of July, a day to celebrate the struggles our forefathers endured in order to gain independence. Today is the 5th of July or, according to the Church of the SubGenius, X-Day. So if you see "Bob", tell him it's too bad we have to wait 'til the year 8661 for the aliens to invade. But on to the music, this thursday's selection will highlight songs involving America. This first song will be by the only non-American band in this post, Spinal Tap , the famous rock/mockumentary stars. If you have not seen [...]

I had no intentions of an Independence-Day-themed post, but I actually Googled over and started reading the Declaration of Independence (whose signing we celebrate today) and looking in my iTunes library for related tuneage, and I couldn't resist. We're having a BBQ later today, and there'd probably be some fireworks if it weren't so darn dry and hot here. There will, however, be Fat Tire (that's American) and burgers. Seven for celebrating: Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix Revolution (Love version) - The Beatles [...]

Uh... Headed out to participate in some of the usual the hoopla surrounding our country's annual July 4th birthday bash... In honor of this empirical achievement I thought I'd post some tunes that are uniquely, uh, uh, I guess... Uh-Merican. here's a crowd pleaser you may be familiar with... I hear it went down well with a few hundred thousand folks gathered at Max Yasgur's farm outside Saugerties New York one August morning in 1969 anyway... Not sure it's what Francis Scott Key had in mind originally...but it'll do. [...]

Tonight is the last post in the short series on the Indonesian music scene. It's been an interesting detour from the usual UK/US bands that have dominated the Devil's blog since it was launched last August. What I've found most exciting and exhilarating about the Indonesian scene is that it seems a lot less concerned about appearing 'cool' or having the right haircut and is therefore much more fun. While there is an element of mimicking the US and UK scenes there is a refreshing variety which is reflected in the three bands tonight. The bands also [...]

There seems to be a a slight similarity between today's song and today's video. First, both are cover versions of great songs which is highly unusual, because I am not a big fan of covers unless the new version is better than the original (Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower") or unless the new version just does something entirely different (Ministry covering "Lay Lady Lay"). That's interesting how the songs I use as examples were both originally Bob Dylan songs. The other similarity between the two videos is France. Nouvelle Vague is French, and the video by the [...]

When faced with such a dilemma as to having to define your favorite song by one of the most amazing musicians in history I figured it best to justify the top choice with a few alternate picks that also mean a lot to me. As such, when a good friend told me yesterday that her favorite Jimi Hendrix song was hands down, "Manic Depression," I felt compelled to dispute that claim. And though "Manic Depression" is absolutely one of my favorite songs, this inquiry proved that it is indeed not my favorite. These, my friends, are my top [...]

All Along the Watchtower was written and first recorded by Bob Dylan, for his album John Wesley Harding , which was released on December 27, 1967. It's been covered a load of times, most notably by Jimi Hendrix. It was Hendrix's only Top 40 hit in the US. Rolling Stone once wrote, " Using the line "And the wind began to howl" as a springboard, Hendrix constructed a tumultuous four-part solo that transformed Dylan's concise foreboding into an electric hurricane. Dylan acknowledged Hendrix's masterstroke: His subsequent versions [...]

Here's a raw treat for your funky weekend. Betty Davis is most often remembered for being the model turned second wife to Miles Davis , who introduced him to Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone , which in turn helped inspire him to record Bitches Brew . But not many know her as a funk goddess pioneer. She was a flamboyant and RAW performer who's sexual overtones were way ahead of her time, paving the way for many female artists since. [...]
...Burns Half As Long" (mp3s finally added 4.16.07) I apologize for the lateness of this playlist - and no I intend no pun at all there - it's just that this has proven to be a surprisingly emotional and difficult to describe Selection for me. A bunch of nostalgia is tied into this time of the year, and a lot of it got dredged up and put in the blender with current coincidences and shakeups, the end result being just a really really weird and distracting couple of weeks. But here we go. [...]

I think all that was left out of the gig guide on Wednesday was the killer gig at The Gem Theatre in Jozi.
