Nicknamed the Singing Brakeman for his work on the railroad, on this day in 1933 the man also known as the Father of Country Music died at the age of 35 of a massive tuberculosis-related hemorr

Do you need another mule skinner? Thought so. Here's three generations of 'em. Jimmie Rodgers - Blue Yodel No. 8 (Mule Skinner Blues) MP3 Dolly Parton - Mule Skinner Blues (Blue Yodel No. 8) MP3 The Cramps - Muleskinner Blues MP3

Back when I started doing these mixes every month, I saw it as a manageable way to keep recommending music without the effort that it takes to do a researched, singular writeup. It seemed to me that picking out 10 random songs wouldn't be all that hard - I always have new things that I'm listening to, as well as my entire musical upbringing to highlight. A part of the experienced mixtaper in me was never satisfied with these as "mixes." For one, there is only so much you can do in 10 songs... they really seemed more like [...]

"That´s when they hung my name, in the fool´s hall of fame..." Country trivia fact of the week: only five performers were inducted into three Halls of Fame: the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Here´s a classic song by each. Jimmie Rodgers - Blue Yodel No. 8 (Mule Skinner Blues) MP3 Hank Williams - My Son Calls Another Man Daddy MP3 Bob Wills - Time Changes [...]

We are giving our sister's record collection a rest for the time being, and playing some of our own favorite records. Today let's dust off On The Track , the 1975 debut from mysterious singer/guitarist Leon Redbone. He's mysterious because nobody knows for certain where he comes from, or who he is for that matter. He did gain some notoriety playing in Toronto in the early 1970s but Leon made his national impression with this album, followed by a 1976 appearance on "Saturday Night Live." Whomever he may be, Redbone is a tremendous musician and singer - [...]

After the first instalment of the country history series, it was suggested that I should have at least two compilations for each article. When I floated the idea on this blog's Facebook page, a number of people approved of the idea. So, just to mess up the sequence of posts, here's a second disc for the Pioneer Years – 1920s selection. ... In the first part of the history, we noted the first ever country recording: Sally Gooden by Eck Robertson [...]

The titles of posts in this series may be a bit confusing. They will refer to the timespan covered in the mixes. But this post looks at the era from about 1930 to about 1941. The next post will include the 1937-41 mix, but the text will be a sidebar to this article, also referring to 1930-41. I hope that nakes sense... Record sales collapsed dramatically with the Depression, with sales dropping from 104 million in 1927 to just 6 million in 1932. Some records still sold prodigiously, [...]

This is the first of a series in probably nine parts, aimed at providing a brief history of country music (all accompanied by an appropriate CD-sized mix). I hope it will not only inform those who have an interest in the genre, but also persuade those who resist becoming acquainted with country music to give it a chance, perhaps weakening resistance and preconceived notions which might be reduced to the stereoptypes of Confederation flags and the jargons of Hicksville. Of course it is very possible to dislike the sound of the steel guitar, the banjo, the fiddle or the yodel. [...]

Slim Bryant died, ancient songwriter, who wrote one of my favorite songs by Jimmie "The Blue Yodeller" Rodgers, "Mother, the Queen of My Heart." He was 101 years old. Here's Jimmie singing it: Mother, the Queen of My Heart- Jimmie Rodgers This is a great old song about listening to your mother. Of course, some mothers give really bad advice. Mine didn't. In general, we should all quit drinking and gambling. Tagged: Jimmie Rodgers , Slim Bryant
Yesterday morning was lovely. One of those Sunday mornings where you wake up and the sun is out and the light in the house is perfect and there's nothing else going on. The Sunday paper was waiting on the driveway, coffee brewed, and the baby was happy. We sat an enjoyed the morning for many hours, listening to a playlist I'd made that was solely comprised of music from the 1930s and 40s, which only added to how pleasant everything felt. Here's a taste of it--ten songs from the 1930s. In my house music from the 30s means mostly country [...]

When Rosanne Cash decided to go public with her father, Johnny Cash 's list of 100 essential country songs, she didn't realize the intensity with which people would want to know the names of all of them. Johnny gave them to her as a_thumbnail.gift when she was 18 as a way of educating her about what daddy did at the office. Rosanne first revealed the list's existence while on tour supporting her 2006 album 'Black Cadillac.' Hounded by fans after virtually every show and prodded by her husband to do something with the list, Cash [...]

Filed under: Around the World Hard not to look at the choice of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' for the lone cover on 'rivermudtwilight,' the first album by the super-trio Les Triaboliques , as coming with some subtext. After all, "misunderstood" is almost a default setting for these guys, each with histories of doing music that sometimes might have confused and confounded people. Ben Mandelson very purposefully confounded -- and delighted -- many in the guise of Hijaz Mustapha with the high jinks (and high-standards in music) in the [...]

This is the squalid, or moving, part of the story, ... and the scene changes. The people change, too. I'm still around, but from here on in, for reasons I'm not at liberty to disclose, I've disguised myself so cunningly that even the cleverest reader will fail to recognize me. J.D. Salinger "For Esmé - with Love and Squalor" 1950. from Nine Stories Little Brown and Company © 1953. Download: "Nine [...]
This video ties in kind of nicely with my previous post from today which highlighted the upcoming Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival. Bristol, Tennessee earned its place as the "Birthplace of Country Music" based largely upon the legendary Bristol recordings headed up by Ralph Peer during the last days of July and the first week of August in 1927. Included among those sessions, known now to the world simply as The Bristol Sessions, were the first ever recordings made by The Carter Family (on August 1st and 2nd of '27) as well as the first ever recordings by [...]
