Lollapalooza Friday: Walkmen to Strokes

Lollapalooza Friday: Walkmen to Strokes At 90 bucks a day (for the poor people), the festival is still too pricey. Trying to pass off Soundgarden as a headliner is a joke. And the ridiculous restrictions on bands playing alternative venues before or after the big fest is out of hand. That said, there is a  good lineup of music for those who want to spend up Friday. I can't think of any other venue where I can see Mavis Staples and the Fuck Buttons on the same ticket. [...]

Osheaga 2010

The Osheaga Music Festival took place in Montreal last weekend over two beautiful weekend days. I was lucky enough to attend the first (and better) day and was busy from morning til night running around from stage to stage, show to show. Here's a quick breakdown of the day. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: Full stage of bearded men and one adorable Jade as usual. Their eclectic live show thrives on the crowd buying into their happy- hippy aura which was hard, and semi-unsuccessful on the massive stage they were put on. [...]

Jimmy Cliff Provides Uplifting Diversion at Osheaga Festival

Jimmy Cliff Provides Uplifting Diversion at Osheaga Festival Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Canada Douglas Mason, Getty Images A festival loaded with indie rock talent like Arcade Fire and the National may have seemed like an odd setting for 62-year-old reggae icon Jimmy Cliff , but Cliff's Osheaga Festival set proved to be an uplifting diversion from the festival norm as Cliff led his 10-piece band through a career-spanning set that preached universal positivity and belied his age. [...]

Jimmy Cliff Played SummerStage, Playing Gathering of the Vibes Sunday

Jimmy Cliff Played SummerStage, Playing Gathering of the Vibes Sunday Jimmy Cliff at SummerStage (07/11/10) Photo : Chris Becker Jimmy Cliff was truly amazing. This was my first reggae concert, and it was a great place to start. Cliff is one of reggae's superstars, a founder of roots reggae and star of an awesome film called The Harder They Come , which has an even more awesome soundtrack. Even at age 62, the man still knows how to dance, and was a portrait of the consummate performer. He often spoke to the [...]

Bluesfest 2010: Day 12

Bluesfest 2010: Day 12 It was the last day of what is considered the largest music festival in Canada. There were various acts playing the last day at Ottawa Bluesfest . From local favorites to a big name rock band which had people crowding the big stage on a Sunday night. These 12 days at Ottawa Bluesfest 2010 was beyond crazy. The acts that I saw were: Amos the Transparent Trevor Hall Ryan [...]

This week's entertainment picks: Hillside Festival, Jimmy Cliff

Got time on your hands the week?  Well here are some suggestions for shows to catch in T.O. this week: Jimmy Cliff, Massey Hall, July 19thHow on Earth could you spend a summer night better than with Jimmy Cliff?  Of course, it could be an outdoor venue which would make it easier for him to see clearly now, but dammit this is good enough. Outside Lands 2010: Late-Night Shows Announced

Outside Lands 2010: Late-Night Shows Announced The lineup for the late-nights following Outside Lands were just announced featuring shows from Pretty Lights, Jimmy Cliff, Levon Helm Band, Hercules and Love Affair and Tokyo Police Club. We'll also be seeing a pre-party at the California Academy of Sciences Nightlife, which is a swank-ass and fitting bourgeois opening to the festival. I keed . I actually really love Outside Lands and it's been a nice addition to my life having moved out here a few years ago. Radiohead raged the first year, I got to mosh to The Mars Volta last [...]

WHAT'S YOUR MUSE? Daniel Balk of The Postelles

WHAT'S YOUR MUSE? Daniel Balk of The Postelles It's the first of the month, and that means it's time for another edition of "What's Your Muse?" The concept is simple: We ask a band/artist to choose a song that means a lot/the most to them. Then, they record and send us a video of themselves describing why they chose the song. Think of it like a collaborative video mixtape project. In this edition, we hear from Postelles frontman Daniel Balk. [...]

Tour Dates: Primus Gets Odd As we previously reported, Primus will return to the road this summer for their first headlining tour in four years. The quirky funk-rock act is wasting no time in lining up additional shows by announcing plans for the second annual Oddity Faire, which last year was headlined by Les Claypool's solo band. Joining the bill for the traveling fest, which kicks off on September 14 in Sacramento, CA, will be Mariachi el Bronx , Portugal. The Man and Split Lip Rayfield , with more acts to be confirmed [...]

Cover Me

Cover Me These are the times that try men's souls and cause them to sweat in places I wouldn't have thought possible. It's freakin' hot and I swear that sweat was beading inside my ears the other day. Our treehouse sanctuary - most of the second floor of an old house - is a delightful place in the spring and autumn with the many windows open and gentle breezes wafting through the dwelling. Summer can be a survival test. (especially a summer as oppressive as this one - technically not even here, yet - [...]

Austin City Limits adds The National, Monsters of Folk to 2010 schedule

Before Austin City Limits was a festival , it was a PBS TV show that featured small-room sets by artists both legendary and on-the-rise. The show airs its 36th season this fall, with four new tapings to coincide with the October fest dates: Monsters of Folk , Sonic Youth , Band of Horses , and The National . All four are first-timers, and the shows are open to the public, so if you’re in the area, be there. You’re not likely to see any of these bands in a more intimate setting, and [...]

Can I Get A ‘Roo ‘Roo: Bonnaroo Day 3

Can I Get A ‘Roo ‘Roo: Bonnaroo Day 3 Bonnaroo can be such an exhausting adventure and Saturday was no exception. With a heat index nearly to 100, one had to do whatever could be done to avoid the heat. Sitting at the main stage waiting for the legendary Jimmy Cliff to perform I could feel the sweat just dripping of my face and for that matter, everywhere else on my body. [Jimmy Cliff] Nevertheless, it was an opportunity of a lifetime to get to see the reggae legend from Kingston, Jamaica [...]

Video: Jimmy Cliff – The Harder They Come

"The Harder They Come" Jimmy Cliff
This week’s videos feature bands you should check out at Bonnaroo … While Bob Marley may have become the biggest name in reggae music history, it's Jimmy Cliff that really deserves the credit for first exposing it to the world to the sounds coming out of Jamaica with his contributions to the soundtrack for 1972's The Harder They Come , a movie that he also starred in. Cliff, who was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame,  should be on your short list of must-see act this [...]

After more than a decade apart, Michael Franti resigns with Capitol

Never underestimate the power of a hit song or a hit album. As any habitual VH1 viewer - or really, anyone breathing - can attest to, Michael Franti has had both of these things with his song "Say Hey (I Love You)" and 2008's All Rebel Rockers . Before you could say "I love you" 27 times, that song was pretty much everywhere, including your mom's playlist right in between the John Mayer and Jason Mraz songs. Next thing you know, Franti is reunited with his former label Capitol/EMI, which he left after his second [...]

It’s weird that Ivanhoe Martin was on NPR, right?

Click here to view the embedded video. Jimmy Cliff was on NPR while I was driving home today (audio here ). There was a connection to the Chris Coke thing, but I think Jimmy was there principally to remind NPR listeners that he's got a new record dropping and a brief US tour on the horizon. And to remind Marco Werman that he (Jimmy) is the truth. All told, it was nice to hear some reggae during my afternoon rush hour news fix. Among the obvious Harder [...]
