Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News True to its name, Jam Cruise -- a festival that sets sail from Fort Lauderdale every January -- brought together a mix of celebrated musicians, threw them on a cruise ship and gave them ample opportunity to jam with one another for days on end while sailing around the Caribbean. With late-night jam sessions complementing a round-the-clock schedule of bands, collaborations happened constantly -- many even simultaneously. But perhaps the [...]

As we approach the magical 200th installment of the "Sunday Mix Tape" series, each week seems to pass by quicker and quicker. Soon enough the big day will be here, and I'll have to look back upon nearly five years of work (although I took a year or more off in the middle), choose some of my favorite old mixes, and put together a huge celebratory compilation. There will be free wine and cheese for you stupid upper-middle-class losers who read this page. The rest of us will have to pay for our drinks, just like we always do. I [...]

Filed under: News , New Releases Few people would say that the climate right now in the music industry is ideal for album sales, but Steve Miller may just be one of those few. In an interview with Billboard , Miller reveals that the Steve Miller Band has definite plans to release not one but two new studio albums, after being out of that game for 17 years. "This material we're just releasing now we've been working on stage for the last couple of years," [...]

Jimmy Reed: Life is Funny A hypothetical: You're a hippy hustler who looks like a young Seymour Cassel; you pick up four middle aged married women at a club; you all go back to the house of one of the women for drinks and dancing; in the stack of records there's a Jimmy Reed record. If everything above happened to be true, then isn't this the song you'd play? "These dancers, these wild and crazy dancers, I think they've succeeded where science failed." Read here why you should [...]

As 1982 turned into 1983, the Grateful Dead , as per custom, were onstage at the Oakland Auditorium, bringing in the new year. Their set that night was an uneven one, and during a somewhat tepid "(Turn On Your) Lovelight," Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir brought Etta James on stage, and immediately, the energy shot up several notches. The combination may have seemed an unusual one, but Etta brought the Dead back to an important part of their roots - when Pigpen , an unruly and low down blues [...]

I can't beleive that I have never posted any music by Jimmy Reed before now, even though he is on my list of Top 10 harmonica players . He is another bluesman of historic importance in that he had more hit records then many other more popular bluesmen of his time. He also had a profound effect on many other musicians, The Rolling Stone, Elvis, The Greatful Dead and many other musicians have played his songs and been inspired by his music. So how cool was it when Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal dropped a cover of the Grateful Dead's "Shakedown Street" at the Hot Freaks show last Saturday afternoon at South By. That wasn't a question, really, it was a statement of fact. I damn near did a double take/listen when Barnes broke out the Dead classic, and he nailed it. Here is Kevin's cover followed by another Dead classic plus some of the originals of songs the Dead recorded over their long and illustrious career - [...]
