I remember a long time time ago, when such things seemed really important to me, having a debate with a friend of mine over whether there there was some objective criteria for calling music "good" or "bad." My friend's opinion was that, there were objective grounds for making such statements, even if he lacked the ability to articulate the criteria explicitly. He pointed to music that appeared in commercials as an example of music that is "objectively bad." My own take was that there is no defensible objective criteria for judging music. In my view, there was only power. I [...]

Probably the most amazing series of commercials with the most amazing jingle in the world. Ever. There's so much wrong. And so much right. Even more amazing? When we stayed with my Sister In-Law in LA , her boyfriend Matt actually had a bottle of the stuff. It's even got the jingle around the cap. Now that's a jingle, folks. If its melancholic nostalgia isn't stuck in your head now, watch the rest of the series … [...]

A "good" jingle is maddeningly inescapable, and therein lies the paradox. Through devious feats of verbal repetition and vague familiarity, jingle writers aren't so much crafting songs but subliminal nuggets of instant indoctrination. You may not like it, but that's hardly the point. So long as you find yourself unknowingly humming "ba da da da da, I'm lovin' it!" and "upset stomach, diarrhea..." (you know the rest) while going about your daily business, well, the jingle writer's done his job. But who are these shadowy figures sculpting our consumeristic war cries? And how exactly do [...]
Lately I've become dangerously obsessed with AMC's Mad Men . It's really made me long for the good old days of the 1960's-when everyone smoked at work, drank before noon, ate red meat, and beat their kids regularly-which is weird since I wasn't born until 1981. Never mind that whole "lack of civil rights" thing, the '60s were the bomb, especially when it came to music. New advances in mind-altering drugs took creativity to previously unimaginable levels (yay LSD!), and major labels were still too green to truly rape [...]

If you thought that Ne-Yo's entrant in Wrigley's attempt to hip up its gum brands via the power of pop music would be aptly described by the phrase "pretty similar to the original Big Red jingle, but with those breezy 'Irreplaceable' guitars backing up Ne-Yo's vocals," congratulations! You win... a chance to go buy your own pack of the stuff at a store. [ Ne-Yo Fan / Pic via BusinessWire ]]
The "writing ad-ready songs for the enjoyment of viewers at home and the delight of network accounting departments" reality show Jingles has had its debut, which was scheduled for later this month, pushed back by CBS, but that isn't stopping the network from letting the world know that Kiss bassist and entrepreneur Gene Simmons is going to be one of the show's judges. (I'm guessing he's going to take the acid-tongued "Simon" spot on the panel.) This caused me to think about how Simmons' body of work could itself be employed for [...]
