by Bill Pearis Book-loving alt rock veteran Lloyd Cole will release his first new album in three years, Standards , on June 21. And though the title might lead you to believe that the album is another "aging rocker releases an album of Sinatra covers," fear not. Apart from the LP's opening cut, his take on "California Earthquake" (famously done by Mama Cass), it's all Cole originals. The record came about when Cole, who spent much of the '80s with [...]
Top 9 songs I listened to on Itunes this year. (Fuck 10? What makes 10 so special?) 9. Billie Holiday - "These Foolish Things" If I could die and be buried in a song, it would be this one. Therefore, perhaps rather morbidly, I guess I listened to it pretty much every day on the bus. 8. Antony and Bryce Dessner - "I Was Young When I Left Home" It’s raining outside. Find a mud [...]
I guess all kinds of different people start bands for reasons that differ hugely, although that favoured and explicitly articulated by Newark, Delaware duo Mean Lady is as good as any. This whole darn thing between multi-instrumentalists Sam Nobles and Katie Dill began ( purportedly , I ought add) as an attempt at getting booked in for Tennessee beauty Bonnaroo. And, on the evidence of Bop Bop, that could quite feasibly become a tangible reality come June 2013. An initially soft 'n' simple hush evocative of Joan Wasser's emotive sonic swoonage , the track soon blooms into [...]

This month the Southbank Centre hauled in baroque pop minstrel Antony to curate its annual Meltdown, and a thorough refurb in feel he's been furnishing the idyllic riverside cultural retreat with over the past week too. Conducting a folkloric saunter both proverbial and enviable through hallowed halls previously trodden by the likes of Bowie, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Costello, Cave and Ray Davies just last year, there's a particular poignancy to the unchanged designation (one resolute since '93) of this year's series as the capital finds itself at the very centre of Olympian maelstrom. If Meltdown hasn't yet descended [...]

This year's Meltdown Festival 's directorial duties have been handed to Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons fame). Antony follows in the footsteps of David Bowie, John Peel and Patti Smith who have all taken a turn helping curate the festival on London’s Southbank. One of the acts Antony has brought in is previous collaborator Joan as Policewoman . As well as Antony, Joan has worked with Elton John, Lou Reed and Spaklehorse while also releasing three albums under the Joan as Policewoman moniker, the most recent of which, i, being released last [...]
The Magic is one of those songs I knew I would like as soon as the first few riffs began. It starts off mellow without being dull, and Joan Wasser’s soft and raspy voice is a refreshing change from barrage of auto-tune we’re subject to these days. I won’t lie – she can get a [...]

Literally years in the making, The Seperate: Orchestral Variations Vol. 1 is an excellent new album put together by Keith Cullen - the man responsible for some of the more interesting UK indie releases of the last 20 or so years, especially during the Brit Pop-era, via his Setanta label. Think along the lines of Edwyn Collins, Divine Comedy, A House, The Frank & Walters, and Into Paradise...you get the picture. Never one to sit still, Keith has been laying pretty low for the last few years when it comes to the music biz, and [...]

Tweet Steve Lamacq introduced me to many fantastic bands as a boy. I remember in sparkling detail him introducing a record by Joan As Police Woman and taking care to make sure we understood that that was the full name of the artist rather than an artist called Police Woman, who was actually someone called Joan. I don't remember what happened next. Perhaps I had a pretty girl to go and meet, or a roof to skate off, or some hoodlums to [...]

Some years are great for shows – like 2008. Some are great years for albums, like 2009. But this was a great year for both, from the start. In the order I remembered them: Family Crest – My Living Room ; 9/11 Duh. Can you believe this alterna-dad cream dream supreme? A stalwart and happy-go-lucky nonet of classically trained musicians show up at my house to play their lovely, life-affirming chamber pop on the anniversary of 9/11 and my teenage son sits in on clarinet? You just had to be there. [...]
Whether deliberate or not, every day at a festival seems to take on a theme of its own, and somehow this phenomenon seemed more pronounced at End of the Road Festival this year at Larmer Tree Gardens on the border between North Dorset and Wiltshire. Friday was ladies’ day, no doubt about it, with some old codgers thrown in for good measure; not a young man in sight. Against all September odds, Friday morning brought blazing sunshine: the only appropriate response was a trip to the Garden Stage. With its gently [...]

It is true to say that our first visit to the End of the Road Festival last year was without doubt the best music event (bar SxSW) we had ever attended. A superb line-up, brilliant layout, and festival goers who were there for the music rather than the 'experience' ensured three days of superb entertainment. It meant we bought tickets immediately they went on sale for 2011, before we knew the line-up, before we'd even washed the dust off from 2010, and waited impatiently for September to come around again. Granted, for us the line-up this [...]
