Jonathan's birthday is one worth celebrating, and Galaxie 500, Joan Jett, and more help him do so.

This morning, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame announced its nominees for 2012 induction. This year, we've got some intriguing new names on the list, including Guns N' Roses, the Cure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric B. & Rakim, and Joan Jett And The Blackhearts. It also includes a few artists who have previously been nominated, including the Beastie Boys and Donna Summer. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after releasing a single or album, and only eight of the 15 nominees will actually make it into the Hall. And as silly as this whole [...]
Filed under: News , Rock Hall Mark Allan, AP It's that time of the season for arguing. The 2012 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced, and this year's list features plenty of A-list names from the rock and hip-hop worlds. Among the first-time nominees this year are hard-rock legends Guns N' Roses , goth/New Wave heroes the Cure , hip-hop pioneers Eric B. and [...]

It's been a grueling stretch at the office - and I'm still vexed by the realization that I use the phrase "at the office" - and I think a part of my cerebral cortex is still a bit glitchy from the rabbit hole Paloma sent me down last week. There's also a band who have dubbed themselves Cosmic America playing downstairs and anyone who might be able to hold a coherent thought in their head while a band that would think Cosmic America might be a good moniker bashes away is made of sturdier stuff [...]

I've lamented the lack of music easily available to me pre-drivers license. There was a small section devoted to albums, cassettes, and 45s in the one diminutive department store of my hometown. There couldn't have been more than three hundred titles and the lot of it would have fit easily into our den. (which was of the typical, Midwestern, wood-paneled variety, circa 1979) This lack of a proper record store was hardly an issue for the first year or so as this small selection of music available to me was strictly the most popular [...]
I've got a real mixed bag of old and new in this entry, sometimes I find my mood dictates the posts within this project and today I've really tried to go with my gut feeling rather than try and link songs that fit well together. If you've forgotten what the 1000 minutes project is all about, click HERE for the full list so far and an insight into why I'm doing it and how it came about. 106. When I first started listening to music during the first couple years of the '80s, this new interest meant something to do during the fall and winter when the elements made for longer stretches housebound. Instead of jockeying with my brother for control of the television or Atari 2600 console, I could now opt for self-imposed exile to my bedroom and listen to music rather than read. More music was listened to during the months of less daylight. This might have meant an increased likelihood of burnout and a need to shop for more music. [...]
My friend over at Got the Fever had a request for Joan's version of Season of the Witch and I thought that would be a great choice and it goes well with Halloween. When it gets really hot out, a lot of us try to get as close to Naked as possible, without being too obscene. Being it's October most of us don't have to worry about getting too hot, but then Joan is always hot. This Naked is an album released only in Japan by Joan Jett and [...]
Joan Marie Larkin (Jett) was born on September 22, 1958. Finally, someone around my age! I met Joan Jett back in 1985 or so while I was in my glorified gopher phase working on The Mark Parenteau Show for WBCN 104.1 - The Rock of Boston (R.I.P.). I was playing ball for the WBCN ballbusters and we used to play local various Rock related teams in the form of exhibitions. I know I have told these stories in the past so I won't belabor the point. One day Joan Jett was in town and we had a game. She agreed [...]

JJ courtesy of Lorena Yes, well, I know it's been a while. Close to five months, actually. But Dearest Friends, I'm not going to spend oodles of e-screed explaining where I've been or where my blog-o-mojo went. It's all good, I'm all good, good to be back. But what brought me back, you ask? That's a fair question, and one deserving of an answer. Rock 'n' roll brought me back, Dearest Friends, and to be more specific: Joan "F**king" Jett . Oh, yessssss... Back in May [...]

Living in the capital of Canada, (Ottawa, Ontario), the last thing you start to expect from your city is to be rich in the arts. I mean, with parliament a stone's throw away from any part in the city, Ottawa is more about politics than it is about the arts. This summer is different, though. Every July, the city puts on a 10 day music festival called Ottawa Bluesfest in which they bring many different musicians (not all blues, last years before they brought Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fergie, Wyclef Jean and Kanye West). Although there are usually [...]

For years, the realization that July had become August produced a Pavlovian sense of dread in me. As a kid, August was the month in which we were herded back into the educational system. The first day of the month made that impending event palpable to me. Sure, there was still a few weeks of warm days spent idly doing nothing at all, but - deep down - I felt the awful truth that it was over. Wimbledon and the 4th of July - two signposts of summer for me - had [...]
