Thao Nguyen will release We The Common , her newest album of fractured indie-pop under her Thao & The Get Down Stay Down name, in a couple of months. She's already shared early tracks " Holy Roller " and " We The Common (For Valerie Bolden) ," but the album track that most of us were most amped to hear was always going to be "Kindness Be Conceived," her collaboration with Joanna Newsom. As it turns out, the song is a sunny and stripped-back folk duet, with Nguyen and Newsom harmonizing simple melodies beautifully. Hear it below. [...]

Before we'd even pressed play on the new Thao & the Get Down Stay Down album, We the Common , we had a feeling 'Kindness Be Conceived' (which features Joanna Newsom) was going to be a highlight, and it is. The two singers duel vocals effortlessly over minimal instrumentation, leading to a pretty great folk song. Listen below. We the Common is released on February 4th via Ribbon Music.

Cue the inevitable deluge of Joanna Newsom comparison, for we've our very own off-kilt songstress armed with a harp and caught betwixt the contemporary and the baroque. Or rather we've now had for quite some time, for The Moths Are Real is the third studio full-length from introspective Londoner Serafina Steer who, quite coincidentally, just so happened to release her début, Cheap Demo Bad Science , but a matter of months after Newsom had herself outed her medievally ornamented magnum opus, Ys . Thus already Joanna-paralleled – and moreover Jarvis-produced [...]

With a sound that has been compared to the likes of   Grimes  (the go-to-girl for convenient comparisons du jour ) and Dirty Projectors   (ditto) the abstract sound collages by Empress Of  (aka Lorely Rodriguez) is bound to confuse listeners, as much as it does the maker herself! The voice of Karen Margaret Sheridan may yet transpire to be one to part opinion as does that of Joanna Newsom. Both commensurately dulcet, if somewhat yowled slow skies is a project with more optimistic promise than a lucid, azure scrape of sky. Across The Sea sounds a little like a lot of The xx' Coexist – albeit disrobed of the excessive swathes of reverb – whilst Walk Me Home plods redolent of the indistinguishable vox of those CocoRosie sisters Cassady and their skewed, parochial chamber-folk. The new Joanna Newsom song is tentatively titled "Look and Despair". San Francisco's  Treasure Island Music Festival  is a bit under-appreciated by outsiders, but that makes for an ideal situation, as there's room to breathe and far fewer people in attendance than its surrounding competition (i.e. Outside Lands, Hardly Strictly). The festival's close proximity to the city's trademark bay only adds to the experience, as well.
