Maker & Joe Beats - Falcon By Design Fieldwerk Recordings: 2011 Despite the fact that Joe Beats and Maker aren't househeld names, their pedigrees are long and rich. The Providence, R.I.-based Beats is probably known best as the production half of Non-Prophets, where he paired with spoken word poet and the largest vegan I've ever seen, Sage Francis. Maker on the other hand has been doing split LPs with the likes Chicago underground rapper Qwel, Seattle duo Grayskul, and Galapagos4 beatmaker Meaty Ogre for the [...]
Whereas yesterday we brought you a tune from Joe Beats ' side of Falcon By Design , today we have a sample of what you can expect from Maker on the joint release. As fans of the Chicago producer know, it's kind of difficult to pin down just where he will tread next sonically. Whether he's releasing solo material or working with acts like Qwel and Grayskul , Maker doesn't really sit still, production-wise. So it shouldn't be terribly surprising to learn that he has gone in a slightly different direction [...]

Zazen's whole disc is dope. Glad to hear it's making waves - dude has become an MC's MC for sure. And this is the tightest track on the disc. These two kill shit together. With Joe Beats holding down the backdrop no doubt. Always love seeing young cats who should work together get up and collaborate. Gives a cranky old writer some hope.
The official music video for "Kill 'Em with the Beat" (feat. Fashawn and produced by Joe Beats), which appears on Elemental Zazen's new record "Nothing To Lose But Change".

For a second we can stop bitching about how local rap cats never get to rock shows with major touring acts. For one, the homey Wispers is opening for Yelawolf at the Paradise this Friday. But before that, Lowell wit rapper D-Tension and Boston-schooled rhyme polemicist Elemental Zazen are propping Murs at Royale this Thursday. The timing is on point, as both Zazen and D-Tension have new discs out this month – and since both of those new discs kick titanic elephant ass. These two are pretty far apart from one another on the [...]

#20 The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?? Album: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Year: 2002 I actually had "Funeral" by Band of Horses penciled into this spot originally. It's a really pretty song with some significant emotional heft, but it feels less and less enjoyable to me in light of their newer work. Instead, I present you [Read Full Post...]

I CANNOTT stop listening to this song. It's a remix Joe Beats did of Ohia- Coxcomb Red. The lyrics are so fucking beautiful I felt obligated to post them on here with the song. So listen to the song, read the lyrics, and let its teeth sink deep into you. Watch out, this song is intoxicating. Ohia- Coxcomb Red (Joe Beats Remix) LYRICS: And I wanted that heat so bad [...]

Rhythm Incursions Podcast Series > Real HipHop Mixes Rhythm Incursions: the DDay One Takeover Last week Dday One stepped up to guest-present Rhythm Incursions for us. In keeping with all the guest-presented shows this one was a belter, with Dday even splicing in content from previous shows including dry pisstakes on Mr Trick's presenting, thoughts from Wrongtom and more. Did we love it? You bet we did - hats off to the man we say! Words from the man himself: "Thanks to everyone that listened to Rhythm Incursions this Saturday. It was great mixing and playing some new stuff...." Dday [...]

My first interaction with Joe Beats was the Non-Prophets album, Hope , with Sage Francis. This was a new modern album on Lex Records that sounded like mid-90s hip-hop through and through. There is a song on there that sounded like Pharcyde's "Runnin"! But when I say it sounded like that, it doesn't mean that it was dated, it was timeless in a way, representing one of the most pure and inventive periods in hip-hop music. Joe Beats' love is clearly for this type of sound, and his particular stamp on it is an almost indie rock influence, born [...]
Big apologies for not posting but the day job is getting the best of me right now. But good shit has been piling up and I have a large stack of some incredible music, first and foremost some new stuff from one of our favorites Joe Beats (aka Joey Beats), of Non-Prophets fame and currently associated with Cunninlynguists. Aaron was kind enough to remind me that Joe Beats has a new record out on Bully and I haven't really thought about the guy since his amazing Indie Rock Blues LP. If you haven't heard [...]
