Regular readers will recall that I've been a Kindler since late 2010 and also just received a Kindle Fire tablet as a Christmas gift. Mrs. BigGeez has a Kindle of her own too, so we're a three-Kindle household. In light of all that it would be a natural subject to write about, but I've resisted the temptation because this is supposed to be a nostalgia-themed music blog. However, I also write about what's currently attracting my interest, and I am certainly spending a lot of time with my new tablet. I'm also discovering that there's one aspect of it that [...]

There's never been a shortage of outstanding instrumentalists in country music, but through the years there have been a select few who seem to be in a special class. One of those would have to be Joe Maphis, who never met a stringed instrument he didn't like. Often called 'The King of the Strings', Maphis was most often seen performing with his trusty twin-neck guitar, but he sometimes switched instruments in mid-song, and could skillfully handle the fiddle, the banjo, the mandolin, and a few others too. "As far as I know, I was the first woman to do the growlin' and the hollerin' and stuff like that. That's what the guys were doin' and I liked it. I wanted to look like a lady, but I wanted to cause a little stir, too." --Wanda Jackson, Finding Her Voice: The Illustrated History of Women in Country Music , [...]

This fall is shaping up to be a great festival season. Thanks to all who wrote to let me know of festivals that I had neglected to include in the Fall Festival List. Our friend and frequent rider, John, reminded us of the Fox Valley Festival. Although I missed the festival, John took some great photos, check them out (link is in the comments to the original post.) Looks like a great time. A very good friend from the Ozarks wrote to tell of a few festivals down his way. When I saw his note [...]

You might have noticed that I've been in the process of posting the original version of every song covered by Gram Parsons and his various bands (The International Submarine Band, The Byrds, and The Flying Burrito Brothers). Here are six songs covered by The Flying Burrito Brothers that I neglected to include in my first Flying Burrito Brothers post. To my knowledge, the FBB cover versions of these songs were all studio outtakes first appearing on the Sleepless Nights compilation. While some of them may not be identified with the Flying Burrito Brothers, they [...]
