With tonight's Bassnectar and Limp Bizkit shows sold out, and John Medeski's World Cafe Live show postponed until next December, it makes tonight's pick pretty easy. Chicago’s folk hero Joe Pug plays a 21+ show at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, along with one of our most favorite local singer-songwriters Hezekiah Jones . Joe Pug plays a brand of folk with a Dylanesque focus on lyrical content, and Hezekiah Jones has his own unique style of story-telling. Go here for tickets to the show. Below, download Pug's In The Meantime EP for free.

It wasn’t until I became a Contributor here at Ninebullets that I had heard of Joe Pug. (I know, I know. For shame! Better late than never, though, right?) Considering how hard and diligently Pug has worked over the past five years, and the fact that I prefer strong, expressive, earnest song writing styles, it truly is a wonder. Pug’s music makes my mind wander. His lyrics are just specific enough that I can relate to them, but not so specific that I feel as if I would need to be him in order [...]
It's not really a surprise that Chicago's Joe Pug used to be a carpenter and playwright student before taking up music full-time. Not when just one listen to his 2008 debut Nation of Heat EP or either of his full lengths reveals a rugged, hard-worn voice and delicately precise guitar picking, with lyrics composed with ... Joe Pug is a self-effacing young singer songwriter who gives away his music for free, tours like an old school troubadour and talks of his debut album "escaping" rather than being leaked. There's a humanity and forcefulness in his songwriting that sparks that rare combination of being tender but not sappy. His second album, The Great Despiser ", features 10 original songs and one killer cover, "Deep Dark Wells", that shines a light on unknown Texan wordsmith, Harvey Thomas Young. Joe Pug - "Deep Dark Wells" (from [...]

In 2008, Joe Pug stopped by for a quick set outside a heavily shingled house. His hair was long; his clothes were plain and worn. He was living in Chicago, writing and performing as an unsigned musician, though he had just released his Nation of Heat EP. Some might say this was the beginning, but for a writer, the beginning is really when you start forming memories. His songs were good, and he performed them well. You can watch the session here.

Well, it took a bit longer than expected (losing your job in November and having a baby in January will disrupt the blog-writing process a bit), but Given and Taken in Ink's list for best albums of 2012 is finally here. This year, a handful of bands came out of nowhere and blew me away. I knew right away that debut albums from Drew Smith and The Rest would stand among the best releases of the year. They are joined by 28 other great albums, by artists well-known and obscure. I'm pleased that GTI's 2012 list is a [...]

Another installment of a new but hopefully regular feature around here that I am attempting to start - Moving Pictures Monday! ~~~ Today we are starting out with a great new video of Gregory Alan Isakov playing the track All There Is off of his That Sea, The Gambler album. The video was sent to me from Joe Connor who filmed it just prior to a show late last year in Brighton - a great quality video and audio recording here only help to show off the beauty [...]
Here at MyOldKentuckyBlog.com we like to stick our grubby little paws into a lot of projects. We've opened the Do317.com Lounge this year, and are doing lots of great shows and sessions with our friends at Pabst Blue Ribbon . On a cold November Sunday in Indianapolis, family and friends huddled together in Fountain Square for a very special PBR / Do317 Lounge Session featuring Joe Pug and Denison Witmer. These Joe Pug videos are so [...]

well, well, well. missed me? probably not, but at least humour me. so... things got a bit hairy around here, as while it may have looked normal to you dear visitor, shit was all kinds of messed up on the back end. the site may have gotten infected with spam, its still not clear what happened, but no one could log in. it would take you to the admin page, but then just the white screen of death, which is not good to see if you're running a wordpress site such as this. i really thought the databases had gotten [...]

http://feeds.feedburner.com/ex itflagger/exit howdy! yes this is a new site, but i have been in the music blogging "business" or "racket" for 7 years and most likely if you follow this kind of music you have probably been to my old site that i ran for 7 years. it was pretty popular, i guess. this new site will be a work in progress for a bit, and of course not have the content that my other beloved site had... give it time i suppose? like the headline says, here is [...]

As I've mentioned on many occasions, I keep a running playlist throughout the year. You've seen bits and pieces of it here but as 2012 comes to a close, here is the final product. Full of the singles that I listened to on repeat to the tracks I put on every mixtape this year and now with the added bonus of being influenced by the year end lists of my friends and contemporaries. It's all over the place genre-wise, but I think it is a pretty solid collection. Amanda Palmer - [...]

We're reviewing some of our favorite (and mostly undiscovered) releases of 2012: Joe Pug - Critically adored Chicago performing songwriter says he packed up and headed to Austin, Texas last year looking to find the roots of the legendary Lone Star songwriting mystique:"I had to go see where it was born"...Ironically, Pug headed back to Chicago for the recording of his new sophomore full-length, produced by Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine)...Pug has developed a remarkable word-of-mouth grass-roots fan base via free CD's and downloads along with [...]
