It's been one heck of a week. Between traveling for work, traveling for family and a whole myriad of other things, I've barely been around a computer for the beginning of this week. I think things are gonna calm down as of today so let's recap some of the awesome that happened this week. Last night I got off my 2012 show snide by catching Lydia Loveless and Scott H. Biram over in Tampa and rushing across the bridge afterwards and catching Mr. Austin Lucas in St. Pete. Not bad for a [...]

Photo by JC McIlwaine, jcmcilwaine.com Oh, women. Such fascinating creatures. Normally, I tend to consider my wife Jenny fairly non-jealous. I have female friends. I tell stories about funny events that happened involving women from the past. And I gush about several female singers. Usually, none of this bothers her. But I have come to realize that there is a limit. Gentlemen, you may not know this, but there is a finite number of things you may say about another woman before it becomes a problem for your ladyfriend. You can be watching an [...]

This album by Justin Bailey has been a long time coming. I've been lucky enough to hear bits and pieces of the Rust before it came out, but the final product is impressive. Bailey is proud of his Nashville roots, which shows in his smokey voice, alternative country and folk influences. He has lately spent [...]

Last week Joe Pug released a live album of a set that was recorded at Lincoln Hall last Spring. The 17 track released can be found here , and it is a nice document of what Pug has been able to accomplish over the last three years. Pug is currently putting the finishing touches on his next studio album. The album will be called The Great Despair and is scheduled to be released this Spring.

BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]

Joe Pug has released a live album, Live at Lincoln Hall , featuring music from his three previous releases - Nation of Heat , In the Meantime , and Messenger . Pug's a charismatic and lively performer (read my review of his show in Philadelphia this past spring), so this is a nice treat for fans who haven't been able to catch him on tour. Pug also announced that his follow-up to Messenger will be called The Great Despiser and should see a release date in the next [...]

I picked up Joe Pugs debut album Messenger after reading about it here on Ninebullets , where it was called "infuriatingly good" and compared to John Prine and Bob Dylan. And what an album it turned out to be. He actually was (and is) infuriatingly good, and sounded like an inspired cross of Prine and Dylan. A correct review if there ever was one...Pug has built his audience one by one by actually giving his music away for free, by sending cd-samplers far and wide. After releasing the EP Nation of Heat his first full [...]

Joe Pug released his first EP around the same time folks started noticing this music blog. I vividly remember the day Nation of Heat arrived by mail and how my jaw slowly dropped as I listened to Pug's songwriting. Music blogging is a labor of love and musicians like Pug are the reason we continue our evangelism. In addition to rising to the top of the ranks in folk songwriting, Joe has won over fans with humility and a blue collar work ethic each time he takes the stage. This session was a reunion. It's our [...]

These mixes were posted in January and February 2010, the winter of our discontent. Seriously, the blog was on life support during this time. We're through that storm now. 2010 was such a great year for music, and these early mixes show why. Many of the tracks were available in late 2009, but appeared on 2010 releases. Tracks are from late October through late November 2009 Gapless mix ripped at 256k VBR. Download all tracks in one zip file [...]

We moved MM to WordPress in April 2010, after being one of the many blogs to get screwed by Google Blogspot. We noticed that this is our one thousandth post since that time and so we have marked the occasion (for such that it is for us) with an appropriately themed mix for your enjoyment. So, from the classic sound of Tenpole Tudor's new wave power-pop via The Men They Couldn't Hang's protest cow punk to the folk of Joe Pug and the Floydian prog-rock of The Silver Machines [...]
Sorry for missing yesterday. Things around work got interesting and I just didn't have time (or the courage to risk getting caught) to post to ninebullets. Anyhow, a really awesome piece of news. In addition to doing my weekly stint on Ninebullets Radio this week I will also be acting as a guest host from 12-2pm on Friday for the " It's The Music " show. So, if you get a chance you should check it out. Also! On Friday night I'm bringing Shane Sweeney ( Two Cow Garage ), Branden Barnett ( Ghost Shirt [...]
