Finally, some good records to listen to. It's been a long few months with little to get excited about in the way of music, but we're happy to report we've been rocking the below releases loudly in the YuppiePunk Music & Mustache Emporium™ for the past few weeks now. And just in time. We were moments away from unearthing our double gatefold copy of Lou Reed's " Metal Machine Music " and playing side 4 until the Apocalypse. The Gaslight Anthem - "The '59 Sound" Though they share a home state [...]

Joe Pug. October 18th, 2008 at the Paradise in Boston, MA. Hailing from my hometown of Chicago, Joe Pug made his first appearance to a Boston crowd this past Saturday night, opening up for Railroad Earth. I was never free to make it out to one of Joe's shows in Chicago at Schubas or the Hideout -- perfect venues for his music -- although I really wish I had been after finally seeing him perform. He plays with all the honesty and sincerity that his songwriting displays and requires, and it's [...]
I saw Joe Pug open up for Backyard Tire Fire and Ha Ha Tonka maybe a month ago and he was great as is his newest recording the Nation Of Heat EP. Pug is a Chicago-based singe/songwriter (only in the sense that he writes and sings mostly acoustic songs) that shows off Dylan-esqe vocals and fairly traditional Americana country-folk guitar playing. Occasionally other instrumentation (most often Joe Pug's harmonica) is added to the musical equation but mostly it's just Joe and his acoustic guitar. Now Joe Pug is the kind of guy that [...]

America's decade-long drunken, credit binge is coming to an end. How many of us live beyond our means? Our Playstations, designer jeans, smart phones, leased cars--all purchased on credit. It's time we learned what generations before us learned the hard way: don't buy what you can't afford, and always put money into savings. Need a little music to ease that gnawing anxiety? Mix: Recession Depression 1. "Year of the Dog" - The Lovely Sparrows 2. "Furr" - Blitzen Trapper 3. "John Henry" - Ed Lewis [...]

1. Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream - My first bike with gears was a Huffy called " White Heat ". It's mostly-white frame was flecked with neon glow-in-the-dark paint spatters and it had Mad Max-esque black and neon yellow gnarly guards (their words, not mine) to protect your knuckles in the case of a crash. Alongside my acid-washed jean jacket (which I hated) and the unfortunate rat-tail my parents inflicted on me, that bike was the most '80s thing I've ever been associated with. This song is like that. Except it's 2008. If this [...]
Sorry if you were expecting 100% Dan Auerbach ingredients, but I'll have a few commercial interruptions. Our boy Joe Pug just released a music video that features him ambling down a dusty road, performing to a handful of strangers at a run down watering hole. Hymn 101 is such a great song. I'm glad the video is simple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =VrbzmzuNkiE Here are his upcoming tourdates: 9/10 South Bend, IN * 9/18 Chicago, IL Park West > 10/3 Chicago, IL The Hideout (w/ [...]

If you're in Chicago tonight, do yourself a favor and get to the Metro. Three HearYa live session alums are going to share the stage for an incredible night of music. Ha Ha Tonka, Joe Pug and Backyard Tire Fire (in the studio today) will all be in attendance. Here's what the night will sound like: Exclusive: Joe Pug - Hymn 101 (from the Joe Pug live session ) Exclusive: Ha Ha Tonka - Caney Mountain (from the Ha Ha Tonka live session ) [...]

I'm ashamed. Ashamed that I've been sitting on Joe Pug's EP since the middle of July and still haven't posted on it. He plays unpretentious old school folk, and I'll consider him a DC-area native for the sake of proving DC superiority (he's from Southern Maryland...). His songwriting reminds me of early Josh Ritter, which coming from me is a huge compliment. Must I continue? I am proud to say that Joe Pug is a Chicagoan, because he is one of the best talents to pop up in the last year. His debut EP, Nation Of Heat , was released in May, and all seven of its songs will capture your heart. Pug sings with a voice well beyond his years, with a rather raw and gritty delivery. Once you listen to the opening song, "Hymn #101", you will understand how powerful of a songwriter Joe Pug really is. In the first week after I heard his voice, I probably [...]

joe pug is a wizened young carpenter from chicago (by way of maryland) who, in his spare time, writes and performs a terrific brand of americana/folk songs, free-form and associative and insightful and, through it all, simply lovely. the songs on nation of heat , his most recent ep, are, as you'll hear from the two hymns below, mostly his words and sandpapered voice, an acoustic guitar and occasionally a harmonica; there are no choruses, no filler or gimmicks. about this you'll hear no protests from these quarters. joe pug - hymn #101 [...]

Sometimes I find myself sitting in Shirk's studio, feeling like a no-talent assclown, wondering what I did to deserve to be in the presence of such incredible musicians. When Joe Pug came through the studio a couple weeks ago I was wondering the same thing, but I was standing instead of sitting. In fact, I don't think I sat down once through the 7-song session. Didn't want to. Just like Steven Tylersmith sang, I didn't want to miss a thing. Joe Pug was that good. I rolled into the studio with a fresh twelve-pack of frosty cold Miller [...]
"Hymn #101" - Joe Pug Had the Bob Dylan haunting the Greenwich Village folk scene in 1961 and 1962 augmented his sociopolitical preoccupation with a wide-eyed spiritual awareness, he might have composed a spare, literate neo-folk marvel such as "Hymn #101." Carefully written and plainly presented (just guitar and voice, thank you), "Hymn #101" glows with humanity and intellect, its simple Dylanesque melody hosting any number of unexpected observations and descriptions, delivered with a voice that channels not only the great one from Hibbing but multiple generations of "next Dylans" as well, from [...]

Conducted by Capt. Obvious Obvious: Congratulations on the release of your Nation Of Heat EP. It's truly a memorable debut. I'm thoroughly impressed by your lyrics. Which writers, musicians and/or authors, do you think most prominently influence your songwriting? Pug: Well, certainly Dylan and Prine are huge for me. They might be obvious, but I think that's okay. Because there's something very fundamental about both of those guys that makes them accessible, so you [...]

Truth be told, the only reason I found out about Joe Pug , was because I'm obsessed with small, ugly dogs and my friends know it. One of them e-mailed me a link to the songwriter's MySpace and the rest of the story consists of me listening to his latest release, Nation of Heat , over and over again. The Chicago dweller possesses a brand of literary Americana that a lot of people shoot for and fall embarassingly short of. I can't decide which name to drop in comparison. Johnny Cash? Bob Dylan? Tom Waits? Woody [...]
