As part of CJAM FM's second annual Joe Strummer Day marathon, where we confront issues related to poverty in the Windsor/Detroit area and surround it with the music of Joe Strummer as a back drop, I contributed two programs this year. Both of them were very different and both of them were two hours each. Joe Strummer Day Part One: Rarities Show The first program aired at 1 AM - 3 AM on CJAM following this years Joe Strummer Day kick off program by programmer Vern [...]

DOCUMENTARY: Joe Strummer hustlin' folks to go see him play in Atlantic City back in 2001 in the film "Let's Rock Again!"(released in 2004). A documentary film Directed by Dick Rude. Needless to say we'll always miss Joe for his honesty and candor. From "hero to zero" his ambition was to be able to survive the post-Apocalypse of The Clash and make more records by just breaking even and being able to entertain himself, his friends and feed his family. Hard to imagine in this scene that barely anybody recognized who he was when to a whole culture [...]
WHO: It's not a huge trade secret or maybe it is that I work for a pretty big advertising company. You can follow my every madman move on the twitters if you want. WHERE: Over the past year I've been working on this original creative content series called Create or Else that lives on a youtube channel and focuses on artists, creators and people who basically do some interesting shit. WHEN: We revealed the channel last year in Cannes France and now we're in the running to win [...]

Another year passes without Joe Strummer , as we enter into our ninth year without the self-described "punk-rock warlord". It was December 22nd, 2002 when Joe Strummer died unexpectedly at the age of 50 - 50! - because of an undiagnosed heart defect. It's still hard to fathom a world without Joe Strummer, and still hard to believe he's never coming back. But the music lives on. I put together a YouTube video playlist tonight featuring a few of my favorites. Click the Play button, sit back, and take a moment to appreciate [...]

I can't do either of these men justice in this little column. That's why they have to go together. I finished Slaughterhouse Five nearly two months ago, have read multiple books since then, and have still been stuck on the proper song with which to match Vonnegut. I usually have a few vague ideas for these posts after finishing a book, and when they don't work it's almost always because I don't feel that the tone of the music matches that of the novel. For Vonnegut, on the other hand, the problem was that no one was cool [...]
A couple years ago somebody ran an online poll asking people what they thought were the Greatest Opening Song Lines in rock 'n' roll history. I think it was BBC radio although it seems like I saw some organization in America did it too. That's a pretty broad category as there's so many to choose from. On this particular pole Warren Zevon 's Werewolves of London took the number 1 spot with this opening lick, "Saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand, walking through the streets of Soho in the [...]

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Get Down Moses (from Streetcore 2003) I just got finished watching the movie Let's Rock Again which follows the newly revitalized Joe Strummer & his fantastic new band The Mescaleros on tour across the world in 2000 & 2001, not long before his untimely death. This film, as is said, touched my heart. M. Strummer was such a humble musickian, beautiful soul, & selfless human. & if there [...]

Seven years today Joe Strummer died suddenly in his home at Broomfield in Somerset, the victim of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. From the time I discovered the Clash in 1979 to the present day, Joe has been a defining force in my life. When I heard the news that Joe had passed away it was a devastating day for me as well as countless others. Most of us know the basic history of The Clash, one of the most important groups of our times. Yet Joe was a man of mystery, willfully reinventing himself to take part [...]
Joe Strummer is MM's all time musical hero. For some it is Lennon & McCartney or Jagger & Richards, but for MM it will always be Strummer & Jones - no argument, no debate, no one else comes close. Together with Mr Popper we were lucky enough to see his penultimate ever gig at Acton Town Hall (typically a benefit gig for striking firemen) and even luckier to see Mick Jones join him on stage for

[grazie a Pirex . E perdonate il [...]

Due to a scorching case of herpes, Johnny symbolically planted his seeds. Today is Johnny Appleseed's birthday, hence it's also Johnny Appleseed Day . This cat walked all over the country with a pot on his head and planted apple trees. He was a poor man and didn't like to accept charity. Some people said he didn't have a pot-to-piss-in but upon seeing Mr. Appleseed, were proven wrong. I was surprised to find two appropriate songs regarding Johnny Appleseed but after hearing Guided By Voices' "Johnny Appleseed" (it's god-awful) there [...]

Streetcore was the third and final album by Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros. The album was completed after the death of frontman Strummer, primarily by Martin Slattery and Scott Shields, and released 21 October 2003. The album marks the band's transition from their previous genre-bending work to a more straight forward rock album, reminiscent of Strummer's early work with The Clash. "Coma Girl" may well be one of the best songs ever recorded by anybody, so says me and the Mrs. "Silver and Gold" is the last song on the album and ends with Strummer's instruction to the engineer, [...]

Words by Cara Bermingham See these or throw your eyes in the bin! Music documentaries, RockDocs whatever you like to call them, are quite possibly the best combination of genres ever. Better than mint choc chip even. Not only do you get a great soundtrack, but more often then not the film ends up telling a rather dark and interesting tale often involving addiction, stress, ego, power struggles and general mania which as we all know is compelling viewing. The ten films below (in no particular order) are films that really should [...]

My, oh my; good ol' Barack did it! Who'd've thought there'd be that many right-thinking voters across the pond. Not I, for sure... for the second time this week I'm glad to have been proven wrong. And now it's Bonfire Night; hurrah! And thus, this week's Top Five is in honour of Obama's 2008 victory and Guido Fawkes' 1605 defeat. Feast your eyes on the official* Top Five Songs About Revolution, Dissent, and the Dawning of a New World Order. It's kinda predictable that most of the songs on this list'll be punk tunes, [...]
