Wolfe Island Music Festival Late post here, but another summer music festival you may want to mark on your calendar is the Wolfe Island Music Festival which takes place every year on Wolfe Island in Ontario [the largest of the Thousand Islands], a quick ferry ride away from Kingston. This year's edition of the festival takes place over the weekend of August 9 and 10 and the full lineup was announced recently , with this year's headliners being Joel Plaskett Emergency . Early bird weekend passes (with camping) went onsale [...]
We're completely ecstatic to reveal the second wave of artists playing at Sled Island 2013! Lineup additions include Danish hardcore phenoms Iceage, indie rock royalty Superchunk, the Miami-based doom pop of Torche, The Night Marchers featuring members of Sled Island 2012 faves, Hot Snakes, psych-rock hype factory Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Weakerthans frontman John K. Sampson, and prolific lo-fi folksters Mount Eerie performing with a full band. Also announced today is the mind-melting masters of hip hop jazz improvisation, BadBadNotGood, hyperbole-inducing Ottawa-based producer Ryan Hemsworth, frantic Vancouver punk rockers White Lung, artful R&B pop crooner Javelin and genre-defying Los Angeles DJ, [...]

Theme of the night at the Joel Plaskett / Rusted Root show: Good looooookin’. The first thing that struck me when I walked into the 9:30 Club was just how darn good lookin’ Joel Plaskett actually is. The Nova Scotian musician is slim, smiling, and super well dressed (all-denim Canadian tux for the win!). His set was simple (both in the fact that he had no props and his banter was limited but friendly) and his music was clean and crisp feeling. My favorite tracks came toward the end when he played Nowhere With You [...]

Heeeeeeey 'Merica, this post is for you! Foremost friend of the hill Joel Plaskett is coming your way next month with a host of shows in your eastern quadrant, and you should go see him. Without hesitation we'll happily admit to being biased as shit when it comes to our fellow Halifax West alumnus Mr. Plaskett, but it isn't without merit. Joel's a great guy, a very talented musician and easily one of the most professional, committed and enthusiastic live performers I've ever seen. If you're not familiar with Joel's work, [...]
Filed under: News , Awards , Music Appreciation Joel Plaskett Facebook Joel Plaskett won't be calling himself Sir Joel Plaskett anytime soon, however he does have some royal clout after receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. According to a Facebook post on Friday, Plaskett announced he received the "new commemorative medal" marking the 60th anniversary of the Queen's "accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada." [...]

2012 is almost ending soon. I am trying to get this done before my radio show on Monday where I count down the Top 12 Canadian albums of 2012. Here is the albums from #30 to #21. Sorry if there is no description on the albums. Check it out! 30. Great Bloomers - Distant Fire 29. Memoryhouse - Slideshow Effect [...]

Frank Yang A little piece of trivia that surprised even me when I learned it (and is really of no relevance to anything save this opening paragraph) - save for his two appearances at the Polaris Prize galas in 2007 and 2009 , I'd never seen I'd never seen Joel Plaskett live. And it certainly hasn't been for lack of opportunity - while it's highly unlikely Plaskett will ever uproot himself from his beloved Halifax, he's played Toronto enough to claim honourary residency. No, it's been partially deliberate [...]

Live music picks for TUESDAY DECEMBER 11 through SATURDAY DECEMBER 15, 2012. TUESDAY DECEMBER 11 / JAPANDROIDS / THE PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE / $25.75 / 19+ It's been quite a year for Vancouver's Japandroids - between the release of their critically-acclaimed album Celebration Rock , to being named "Band of the Year" by Spin, 2012 was a year to remember for the indie rock duo. This show is part of Edge 102's Jingle Bell Rock concert series, and $1 from [...]
We're rapidly approaching the Christmas concert dry spell, so this may be your last week to really get your fix. Thankfully, there are a lot of great show to choose from. May I suggest: Japandroids, The Phoenix, Dec 11 Coming off a huge year with tons of best-of-2012 list spot coming, Japandroids treat us to a high-octane rock experience. Joel Plaskett Emergency, Horseshoe Tavern, Dec 12 Plaskett should shine in this hallowed character-filled venue. [...]
"Every young band wants to build a wall, but a real rock record's like a wrecking ball." Joel's been on a mellow streak as of late, but Scrappy Happiness proves that he & his Emergency haven't forgotten how to plug in & rock out. Scrappy Happiness packs all the jangle, all the crunch, & all the oddball guitar effects that we've come to expect from a Joel Plaskett Emergency offering, but sounds a little more off the cuff this time around. The record plays like a ramshackle van ride across the Great White North as Joel recounts fleeting experiences with [...]
Among all the publicity this week for the announcement of Bon Jovi at Slane 2013, there was a little gem of a pub called Boyles in the centre of the village which finally made it's way into the spotlight when Jon Bon Jovi himself sampled a pint of Guinness in the pub. In a successful week for Boyles I thought I'd finally write an 'In Focus' post that I've been meaning to do for a while. http://boylesofslane.com/ [...]

by ellefeeney Halifax's Joel Plaskett and the Emergency Band was one of my most anticipated acts at this year's Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. His enthusiastic Wednesday night performance surpassed all of my expectations. The night’s folk-rock line-up in the Mojo Tent made it clear that the Harvest isn't all jazz and blues. Andy Brown [Photo: Scott Greer] Fredericton's own Andy Brown , the winner of the 20102s Galaxie Rising Star award, started off with his [...]

Eric J. Lawrence One of the great pleasures of filling in on “ Morning Becomes Eclectic ”, as I did a couple of Thursdays ago, is that I get to share some of my favorite hidden gems that are normally only heard on my Sunday night show. This time around, the selection that seemed to garner the most attention (based on the various Twitter and Facebook responses) was “ Lightning Bolt” from Canadian trio Joel Plaskett Emergency . [...]
Filed under: News , Awards , Music Appreciation Upper Class | A&C | Secret City The fight to determine the best Canadian album of 2012 based on artistic merit has officially begun. With most of the Canadian music industry setting their sights on Toronto's NXNE , organizers of the now seventh annual Polaris Music Prize instead announced its 40 Long List nominees today at the Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver, BC. And [...]

Live music picks for TUESDAY MAY 15 through SATURDAY MAY 19, 2012. TUESDAY MAY 15 / PS I LOVE YOU / THE GARRISON / 1197 DUNDAS W / $10.50 / 19+ This is as polarizing a band as you're ever going to find, and on a personal level, I'm not even entirely sure what I think of them. On the one hand, PS I Love You is made up of two clearly talented musicians. And they're from Kingston, which is only a stone's throw away from Toronto, so [...]

"This is our only chance/for certain happenstance," sings Joel Plaskett at the opening of Scrappy Happiness , acknowledging that the project he and the Emergency are about to undertake (writing and recording the 10 song album in a 10 week/one song a week regime that saw each song debuted on CBC Radio 2 as it was completed) would leave little room for pre-planning and plotting. Unlike his last record, the sprawling and ambitious triple album concept Three , Scrappy Happiness was going to come [...]

The Joel Plaskett Emergency played the top of the CN Tower to kick off the five day music festival that is Canadian Music Week. Seeing one of my favourite Canadian bands in one of the most interesting of Toronto venues was certainly a highlight of the festival. We got to rock out while enjoying a panoramic view of the city and gorging on baked pastries. How sweet is that? The band has been featured on CBC as they record a song every week for their latest album Scrappy Happiness . As one would expect, the [...]

Wednesday served as the official start of the 30th year of Canadian Music Week, and what better way to begin a five-day stretch of music and club-hopping than an intimate performance from the Joel Plaskett Emergency and Ben Caplan high atop our country's national tower? Ben Caplan & The Joel Plaskett Emergency (The CN Tower) The evening's festivities were held in Horizons restaurant, 111 stories above the ground. A small makeshift stage was set up between the two bars and seating areas, the restaurant itself comprising about [...]

Today Joel Plaskett Emergency dropped the final single, entitled Lightning Bolt. This is the tenth song in a series of ten recorded and digitally released by Joel and his band The Emergency; one song a week for ten weeks. Finally Scrappy Happiness just dropped on March 13, 2012. For more info about this ambitious project, check out CBC Radio 2′s post . I bought the single on iTunes ! Here is what I think of the single: You can say he saved the best for last on [...]
