Tonight's tune is another from the Canadian indie-rock artist Joel Plaskett , this time coming from his solo album Three . Three is Plaskett's third solo album, released on March 24th of 2009. The number three is a common theme throughout the release with the album containing three discs, each disc having 9 songs, and many of the track titles consisting of a single word repeated three times. Through & Though & Through is the second song on the first disc, and is currently receiving heavy play on CBC Radio 3 . [...]

With the first cut-off date for Polaris Long-List nominations approaching, and this being our first time being involved, I thought it would be a lot easier to jot down thoughts and ideas before the deadline, instead of just scanning the list and writing down 5 records on due date. Obviously, we've covered a ton of Canadian releases this year - one or two a day, 5 days a week - but we've missed some quality ones as well. I haven't decided my Top 5 or the order they fall in but right now these are the nine records [...]

It's not "west-side", it's "3." Joel Plaskett is no stranger to concept albums, after all, his previous disc was a (fictional?) tale about teenagers, bandmates, a place called Ashtray Rock and a "1940's beauty." His latest release, Three is a triple disc set. Yeah, you read it right. THREE. Yet even though there are three discs, it is not a pompous self absorbed effort. Clocking in at about an hour and a half total, it is quite the opposite. The ever humble Mr. Plaskett decided [...]

I'm sure it's happened to you... you open the refrigerator and get a whiff of leftovers you've forgotten about. Some you lament over because the meal was delicious and you really should have done it justice by finishing it. And others... well you wonder why you took them home anyway. Same goes for the Chart Attack Showcase, waaaay back on March 14 during Canadian Music Week . As we move into summer- the season of concerts and parties, I'm duly noting some of these Chart Attack Showcase bands which will likely be featured at [...]

(photo: Andrea Crabbe) On my recent trip to California, I rediscovered my iPod's ability to play a single album through from beginning to end. So accustomed have I been to the shuffle setting that the concept of listening to a single album by a single artist in the running order they intended is novel and new. I shouldn't be as surprised as I ma by how rewarding this is, since most of the time my shuffled music listening experiences have been little more than five second snippets of songs that I immediately skip; unto the next [...]

******* When it comes to the East Coast music scene, I'm not sure there is going to be a bigger release - in scope and anticipation - than Joel Plaskett 's new record Three . Twenty-seven songs full of classic Joel and the Emergency sounds, but chock-o-block full of surprise and bigger, bolder arrangements. At the end of the day, Plaskett's biggest undertaking might end up being his most appreciated success. To celebrate, we have three copies of Three - signed by Joel to giveaway. We are going to feature one record [...]
Joel Plaskett knows what I'm talking out. If wishful thinking is all I've got/ I've got to keep on thinking wishful thoughts/ thinking wishful thoughts/ I wish you were here/ but you're not.... Sloan - Keep on Thinkin' (mp3) (buy) David Usher - Time of Our Lives (mp3) (buy) City and Colour - Sometimes [...]

Caleb Buyers Let's be honest, there's not a lot of reason for there to be a Carl Newman solo record. The man is the chief songwriter in The New Pornographers , an outfit that turns out material at a pretty decent rate all things considered, and it's not as though he has a metal jones to itch that wouldn't work in the context of the Pornographers - when he puts on the AC Newman hat, he's still the consummate popsmith. But the whys and wherefores are his business - for the rest of us, [...]

March is going to be a good month for album releases. Here are the two I'm looking forward to. Joel Plaskett will be releasing a triple album in March. "Triple album"?! I've never even heard of that! It's gonna be three (wow, three!) discs! Mmmmmm. "A new record for a new year. Well, three new records for one year to be exact. March, I've been told, so now I'll tell you, 'March, my new triple record called 'Three'. See you in the spring. [...]
Two nights ago, I caught a short, sweet set from my favo u rite Haligonian, Joel Plaskett . It was just him, his guitar, his brokedick keyboard, his buddy Peter Elkas , and 29½ appreciative fans. But this ain't a show review; I'm bringing this up because Joel announced that he's got a new record coming out soon (it's being mixed right now), and it's a "triple-album." But don't misunderstand; it's not 3 albums, JP's just being cutesy: every song title is just triplicate ("Pine Pine Pine," "True True True," "Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'," etc.) is [...]

The Family Straw took a trip to the beach yesterday. Besides being sunburned and sandblasted, we had a great time. Here are some "beach" songs. Jane's Addiction ∞ Up The Beach Los Straitjackets ∞ Kawanga! Jon And Roy ∞ To The Beach Joel Plaskett ∞ Lying On A Beach The Avett Brothers ∞ If It's The Beaches Air France ∞ Beach Party [...]

Hailing from the music-rich town of Halifax, Nova Scotia, songwriter Joel Plaskett has been through multiple incarnations as a songwriter and a performer. As a member of '90s alt-rock band Thrush Hermit , Plaskett first came to Memphis to record the band's Elektra Records release, Sweet Homewrecker , at the original Easley Recording Services. Returning to Memphis proved to be a bittersweet yet joyous homecoming for Plaskett; Easley Recording Services burned down a few years ago, but Plaskett had the good fortune to record a couple of tracks at Doug Easley's newly-built (and just [...]

29 - DINOSAUR JR - Beyond Wow Dinosaur JR`s first album since forever and I loved it almost instantly... I must admit I`d only heard a few tracks prior to this years release. With the end of the year approaching, it's time once again for the 2007 edition of the Hottest Bands in Canada survey. And in the end, it was close. Even with over 30 panelists and 150 bands receiving votes, it was close. And I'm talking insanely, nail-bitingly, one-point-separating-#1-from-# 2, "it could've gone either way if one person had even reversed the order in their ballot" close, with the difference being a ballot submitted about 30 seconds before I went to hit "Publish". But [...]

I`m very excited for the Rogue Wave show @ The Mod Club tonight...If u come here once in awhile then you already know I`m a big fan. This will be my second time seeing the band live, and what makes this one more exciting is I will get to hear the new material. " Asleep At Heaven`s Gate " is a fantastic listen and I`m curious to see how it sounds at The Mod ....Also as I mentioned on the 11th of October....I`m still in the process of turning some of my CD`s into Mp3`s....this [...]
