A lovely thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together. - Garrison Keillor

Tweet Eagle Rock, California's Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have a fifties chemistry that is often attempted but so rarely accomplished, making them sound simple but at the same time complete. "Girls, Gather 'Round" is a true let's-all-sing-together song with its "one last night before the road steals me away" sentiment. It is nearly impossible to make it through the chorus without wanting to join in and take part in the swing-your-mug rhythm with the oh-so-familiar feeling that embodies the entire [...]
. . .What a great week it's been for music in Indy. Bright Eyes on Thursday, the Head and the heart on Friday (both in-store at Luna and then an impromptu show at The Earth House after the decemberists cancelled) and then My Morning Jacked at white river on sunday. Unfortunately, my card reader has [...]

Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, the double-barreled purveyors of Americana who announced their intentions as the Milk Carton Kids by releasing a live album this spring , today unveil their first proper studio recording. It's titled "Prologue," an exceedingly tender and unassumingly spellbinding collection of tunes the L.A. duo — wielding just two acoustic guitars and two voices — recorded with Eric Robinson. None other than Joe Henry wrote a foreword for the album, pointing out how Pattengale and Ryan have succeeded in creating a unified "voice" for their music. Writes Henry: "They move to become a [...]

If not because of their music — a winning combination of back-porch Americana and classic pop — then Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have become one of Los Angeles' most dynamic duos on pure charisma. The twosome has become a Hotel Cafe favorite with its poignant blend of musical storytelling built from the simplest of elements: two voices and two acoustic guitars. This week, Pattengale and Ryan take the next step — they're adopting a band name, the Milk Carton Kids , and releasing a live album "Retrospect." They're selling physical copies of the album at the show, but [...]
Meg and Dia have announced a fall tour alongside The Spring Standards and Joey Ryan . The tour will hit up Maxwells on November 26th and The Studio at Webster Hall on November 28th. Tickets for both shows go on sale this Saturday. Meg and Dia have recently finished recording their upcoming album. The band also announced that they were dropped from Warner Bros Records. No word on what label the band will release their new album on.

It's hard to listen to the music of Cary Brothers without visualizing the television and film protagonists his songs have serenaded — starting, famously, with "Blue Eyes" from his college buddy Zach Braff's 2004 movie "Garden State." Chilling moments of self-realization, hyper-romantic love scenes, startling plot points: Brothers' tunes, for better or for worse (but certainly better for his pocketbook), have oozed from scads of them. ||| Photos by Jeff Koga Which can be a curse when presented with just the tunesmith himself, [...]

Oh No Ono I checked out Denmark's latest export, Oh No Ono, on a whim a couple weeks ago knowing almost nothing about band. It turned out to be time well spent however as the experimental collective's sophomore effort, Eggs , is one of the most enjoyably strange and genuinely fascinating albums I've heard so far this year. Over the course of ten tracks, Oh No Ono takes you on a psychedelic journey ranging from nimble pop tunes to hazy, meandering rockers that incorporate myriad musical elements and themes. [...]
Joey Ryan is a Berkeley-educated singer/songwriter who is poised to release a new EP of modern folk-based music. The record, Kenter Canyon, was independently financed and will be available on January 19th on a pay-what-you-will basis. What's remarkable about Kenter Canyon is not the way it was paid for or the distribution method rather it is the songs themselves. Ryan demonstrates a maturity

[Twenty-five years ago today, Bruce Springsteen released "Born in the U.S.A." Salute something, even if it's Annie Leibovitz's album cover.] Around the clubs, for folks who don't have tickets the to the big Green Day show at the Music Box @ Fonda, or who aren't going to brave the elements for Video Games Live at the Greek Theatre, or who won't drive to Pomona for the Juan MacLean and the Field : You know you're a buzz band when you have two gigs in Los [...]
As if I don't already have enough things on my plate. One of my resolutions, on my very short list, of things to do this year is listen to even more music, live music that is. The one constant thing in my life that truly makes me happy is music. After all it's the universal language of love, sadness, and happiness. Music touches all of us in a different but very profound way. So to start of the year on the right foot I'm excited to introduce you to Joey Ryan . He will [...]
On Friday night I got to see Meiko perform at The Canal Room. The Canal Room is a fancyish lounge type place. It was a very nice venue actually, and this was my first time there. Drinks are pricey, but they actually lit the stage pretty well, so they get bonus points for that. Up first was Joey Ryan, with a gentle, depressing acoustic set. His songs are well-written and pretty. His singing seems

One of the readers of this blog, Lisa, pointed my at this wonderful singer-songwriter. Thanks! Joey Ryan grew up with listening to Bob Dylan and thought he certainly would never play music for a living. He went to class and after that college attended a college. But instead of pursuing a career in psychology he started singing and released his first full length record called "Good Enough" back in 2005 his "The California EP" followed in 2007. He just finished his new album set for release this summer, entitled "...With Its Roots Above and Its [...]

I recently got a chance to sit down and watch Bella , an independent film from Mexican director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde. I loved so many elements of it -- from the believable way it traces a chance connection between two people over the course of just one day, to the gentle yet realistically untidy way it deals with the mistakes we look back on throughout our lives. Monteverde is a tenacious Austin-based filmmaker, and Bella (his first feature-length film) was the winner of [...]
