Jóhann Jóhannsson, the post-classical elegist

Steve Reich - Different Trains (Part I)
Iceland's Jóhann Jóhannsson has, at least since 2006's IBM 1401: A User's Manual , been one of the most interesting and productive of a loosely affiliated group of "post-classical" composers and musicians, which includes Peter Broderick, Max Richter, and Sylvain Chauveau. In as much as post-classical means anything, it is that the work of Jóhannsson et al embraces and expands on a taut minimalism of the kind seen in the work of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, typically combining it with the lyricism of Arvo Part, John Tavener, and Henryk Gorecki. Steve Reich's use of narrative in [...]

Jóhann Jóhannsson

Jóhann Jóhannsson icelandic composer // contemporary classical The cinematic nature of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson's work has led him to work on countless soundtracks for documentaries, shorts and feature films. And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees (2010), composed as a soundtrack for Marc Craste's award winning animated film Varmints, embodies ghostly choirs, gentle strings, lyrical piano, all wrapped in the barely perceptible electronic processing that Jóhannsson is known for. Album Review: Jóhann Jóhannsson – The Miners' Hymns

The Miners' Hymns , Jóhann Jóhannsson 's latest effort, is really one-third of a project which is international in its scope: the Icelandic composer and producer collaborated with US filmmaker Bill Morrison on the documentary of the same name which traces the social history of miners in the city of Durham, England. Before you can even begin to make assessments about the quality of the music, you have to make an assessment about what it is you're assessing: Is this a set of tracks to accompany the film, or does it stand alone? And should it? [...]

Jóhann Jóhannsson — There is No Safe Side but the Side of the Truth Jóhann Jóhannsson 's The Miners' Hymns may have been originally conceived as a companion piece to the Bill Morrison film of the same name, but each one of its sweeping orchestral movements is densely cinematic in its own right. Excerpt "There is No Safe Safe Side…" simmers and burns on strains of brass before erupting into [...]

Jóhann Jóhannsson – The Miners' Hymns

Jóhann Jóhannsson's eight offering, The Miners' Hymns , is also his second consecutive soundtrack release, following up last year's success with his score for And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees . Jóhannsson's latest release was written and composed for Bill Morrisson's documentary of the same name about the old British mining industry, compiled from archival footage supplied by the British Film Institute and was recorded live in Durham Cathedral. Fan's of Jóhannsson's previous work will be familiar with his contemporary classical, yet, experimental style. His work, regardless [...]

Jóhann Jóhannsson, The Miners' Hymns (Fat Cat)

Jóhann Jóhannsson, The Miners' Hymns (Fat Cat) "I'm still down there where the seams are deep Digging a hole, away in the coal, go down...go down" Ewan MacColl, The Big Hewer The opening of Jóhann Jóhannsson's latest album features the sound of a church organ playing huge, slow, mournful chords, rising in volume as if asking a question in increasing desperation. The call goes out into a huge and seemingly empty chamber, echoing and gradually falling away into a dark silence. After a few minutes, it finds an answer, a two note response from a [...]

Jóhann Jóhannsson — The Miner's Hymns

Jóhann Jóhannsson — The Miner's Hymns Jóhann Jóhannsson

Battle LA!

Battle LA! (This ain't no Jennifer Anniston movie, Aaron Sorkin!) It's quite rare I get excited for an over the top action movie release, but these trailers for "Battle:Los Angeles" have put me in the proverbial shoes of a fat nerd waiting in line for Comic Con. The wonderful use of the eerie track by Icelandic musician Jóhann Jóhannsson sent me over the edge. According to the movie premise, L.A. is the last line of defense against alien invaders. Thanks for letting us down NYC, and SF! Cue Michelle Rodriguez's tough face ! Check out [...]

Guest Music Post: Praveen

Guest Music Post: Praveen [RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Hey IS050 gang! Mr. Alexander was kind enough to ask for a guest post on some music I enjoy. I decided to mostly feature some music which has inspired and surrounds my Sepalcure project (alongside the talented Machinedrum ). These are the repeats - the jams I can listen to over and over without ever wearing em out. 1) Mount Kimbie - Sketch on Glass A near unbearably long intro, IDM inspired percussion and a final vocoded 1.5 minutes to die [...]

New Releases: Bleeding Through, Coheed and Cambria, Freelance Whales

An okay week for releases, guys! Not amazing, but pretty good enough. For the metal fans, Bleeding Through is back with a new one, as is War of Ages . For fans of a whiny, pop-punk version of Rush, we've got Coheed and Cambria 's new album for you. For those that like actual punk, Subhumans has something for you. Freelance Whales and MGMT have new ones, for the hipsters among us. And, for the classically minded, The Philip Glass Ensemble and Jóhann Jóhannsson [...]

ASettingSun+Johann+B issonnette+Hecker

ASettingSun+Johann+B issonnette+Hecker Jay Bodley aka A Setting Sun has been on the blog before with his cover of Air's Le Soleil Est Pres de Moi but that sound is far different from what he's brewing which is more of a textured doom metal that you'd find from an artist like Ulver with hints of what a non-metal fan would call beautiful. Raspberry is a song that could be split up into multiple sections where you start off with the unforgiving coldness of the intro [...]
