True story: I really wanted this to be the "first dance" track at my wedding. My Bloody Valentine 's "We Have All the Time in the World" is an amazing John Barry-composed cover, you might notice the title and think of Louis Armstrong's voice from the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service . But this version is insane, kind of like the slow-dance anthem of the future. A very dramatic sound that shows My Bloody Valentine ditching their trademark guitar wash for synths and sweeping, watery drones, and Belinda's vocals are both alien-like and seductive [...]

Inglesi, lasciatevi andare. Buon sangue non mente. With all the posts about film music for David Lynch Week , we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the passing on Jan. 30 of John Barry , an Oscar-winning film composer best known for his work on the 007 franchise. I'll make this post short and sweet - my three favorite John Barry themes: Count Basie Orchestra, "From Russia With Love" [ Buy ] As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra for its 1965 album Basie Meets Bond . A very Basie interpretation [...]

I'm back! World Wide Internets is all fixed now! Huzzah! But I turn my back for one minute however and down goes my one of my favorite composers, John Barry . If you haven't deduced from today's art by now you may know him as the guy that composed pretty much 90% of all the James Bond soundtracks including the most recognizable spy jingle in history, the James Bond Theme . While Morricone, Schfrin, Goldsmith and Williams are all geniuses in my book, no one quite hit those high, over-the-top brassy notes [...]
Five time Oscar winner John Barry passes away at age 77.
With the death of Charlie Louvin, one of the longest-running performers in music has passed on. With his brother Ira, he started performing in the 1940s as the Louvin Brothers. The country and gospel act was massively influential. Elvis Presley was a huge fan (the brothers were his mom's favourites). Ira, a racist drunk, died in a car crash in 1965; Charlie continued to record and perform for the next 45 years. Alas, the Louvin Brothers are often remembered only for the cover art of their 1960 album Satan Is Real (the story of which is HERE [...]

Occasional Muruch writer Brendan was pulled out of the shadows again by the death of composer John Barry. I (Vic) would count Barry's beautiful theme from Somewhere In Time as one of my all-time favorite instrumentals. Brendan's thoughts on Barry's work follow... One of my favorite composers of film music died this week. Career retrospectives are easy to find, so I've decided to post a chronology of my favorite John Barry music. The James Bond theme is perhaps one of [...]

It has been reported today that John Barry , one of the great film score composers of the 20th Century, has died. We don't play much John Barry at L'Amour Electronique (his widescreen music is better suited to our sister night Tonight We Fly ), but here are a few L'Amour related points of interest: John Barry was Jane Birkin 's first husband, with whom she had their daughter Kate. John Barry composed the score to Beat Girl , which starred [...]

John Barry died today at the age of 77. Without him, the Sixties wouldn't have swung quite as bold or nearly as brassy. You don't need me to tell you of his work on 11 Bond films, or that his musical scores packed full of stabbing brass, sweeping orchestration and exotic leads (dulcimer! vibes!) often conjured up images of carefree playboys at the wheel of a Jaguar, speeding through the Swiss Alps with a Ray Ban-ed and mini-skirted female for company (although that sounds a lot like a spoof scene from Austin Powers , but you know what [...]
You may not even know who he was, but his music has probably lived in your head from the first day you heard it. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that legendary film composer, John Barry , has died as a result of a heart attack. Hailing from Yorkshire, England, the 77-year-old won five Oscars for movies like Born Free and Dances With Wolves , but he is most famous for his contributions to a series of films about a certain British spy. From 1962 to 1987, Barry contributed to [...]
John Barry , an Oscar-nominated film composer, died yesterday. He was 77 . The English-born composer won two Oscars, for the score and the song, for "Born Free" in 1966, and he earned single statuettes for "The Lion in Winter" (1968), "Out of Africa" (1985) and "Dances with Wolves" (1990). He was also nominated for his scores for "Mary, Queen of Scots" in 1971 and "Chaplin" in 1992. But it was his work on a series of James Bond movies that he will perhaps be best remembered for. [...]
Never cared for Bond but his compositions were always beautiful.
