John Cale entered into the new decade on the high of two critically acclaimed records, Black Acetate and Hobosapiens , that saw him giving a nod to his poppier guitar based rock instincts, and blending them with some delightfully experimental use of electronics and synthesizer. As such, it should come as no surprise that 2011 finds Cale continuing on the same path, to similarly great success. Compared to the records mentioned above, Cale's latest, Extra Playful , is perhaps the most accessible of all. Where the others ebbed and flowed [...]

Cale is still pushing the envelope by blending pop music with an avant-garde sensibility.

Lately, we've been listening to a lot more John Cale . A LOT more. Maybe it's the recent announcement of his new EP Extra Playful , or maybe it's just the fact that obsessions happen when they do, and this one is happening now. Regardless: it's time to share. Cale is best known as a multi-instrumentalist and co-writer for the original lineup of the Velvet Underground, and no doubt, that's an incredible body of work. But even more incredible, frankly, is his run as a solo artist. During [...]
Q & A: cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy Talks About Their New Album, hanDover.

This EP's not quite as playful as its title suggests, but it's not especially noteworthy either. On his new EP, Extra Playful, John Cale's doing what he does best, which is toying with pop-rock sounds and structures. These five songs aren't actually pop songs, but they could be if Cale allowed it. Even so, Cale doesn't undercut them enough to really make a statement, and that's not the point. There's a bit of a toss-off feel here, especially with the relatively funny "Hey Ray", and the disc serves as a fine...

John Cale is one of those slow-grow pleasures. At first seemingly inaccessible, and at times overly droll, once you've gotten hooked, he is an undeniable addiction. Cale has been steadily delivering albums for the past 40 years; There have been duds and there have been winners, but one thing is for sure: it's always interesting. That interest is exactly the reason that we were so stoked to discover that Cale has a new EP on tap for the day after Thanksgiving, entitled Extra Playful (cover above). [...]
How do you describe a man who's always been so ahead of his time and so brilliantly talented? You don't, you just share, share, share. John Cale may be best known for work with the Velvet Underground, but he also has an solo discography as well. Even more exciting is the recent Extra Playful EP [...]

Velvet Underground figurehead John Cale's new video for "Catastrofuk" is a pretty freaky scene (basically, The Alice In Wonderland tea party scene + the moon!) which coincides with the controlled chaos of the track. The director is Eden Cale, his daughter, capping off a monumental week in directorial work by rock daughters . The collaboration seems a little more seamless than the one his former VU bandmate is currently working on . Read More...
2011, Indie eye REC . A founding member of Velvet Underground John Cale's sound is hard to pin down. He's dabbled in spoken word and avant garde, and is as compelling working on classical music...
It has always been impossible to classify John Cale’s work simply in terms of genre. From his early classical training leading to adventures in minimalist new music with ’60s drone pioneers Terry Riley and LaMonte Young, to the ‘everything from lyrical torch ballads to distorted noise rock’ aesthetic of his collaborations with Lou Reed in the Velvet Underground, it’s easy to see why the most usual and useful epithet applied to him could be ‘Godfather of Avant Garde Punk’. And none of that even touches on the many and varied aspects of his long solo career, and his foundationally influential [...]
Tweetvaso link So an idea that has been tossed around back and forth behind the scenes at tympanogram is to give some credit to older music that we never had a chance to cover. There have been many different spins put on the concept, but I would like to start things off by looking back...
Yesterday, we finally got to hear the first single from Lou Reed and Metallica's forthcoming album. And it was just as bad as we feared it would be, coming off as little more than an ill-conceived vanity project by two very different acts that are both past their prime. Late-career albums like this one are often the target of disappointment and criticism, partially because the music industry is such a transitory place — audiences and record companies alike are always on the lookout for the next big thing, on whom attention is focused for a couple of years [...]
