They Live (1988) We are currently living in a global recession and times are tough; unemployment is high, manufacturing is disappearing from the economic landscape, and several European nations are teetering on payment default which threatens to drop a full depression bomb on the global economy. Add to that the frustration many people feel when governments give bailout packages to save the financial sectors, only to watch gobsmacked when the CEOs give themselves raises. It's certainly understandable why people would want to send a message to those in the 1%. But [...]

Christmas's not over yet...there's still time for a few more pearls inside your socks over the fireplace. This time Krikor's the Santa. The exquisite french producer that once had a dead band (Krikor and The Dead Hillbillies) to pronounce that "God Will Break it All" has now unburied the OST of 1981 John Carpenter 's movie named Escape from New York . Krikor placed his hands over "69th Street Bridge" and "The President is Gone" and the result is epic. The first track has a strong bass and some pleasent heaviness, so that Krikor defines it [...]

A few months back I found myself in a rather interesting conversation about the film X-Men: First Class . I was at one of our local Toronto Blogger pub nights and conversation was flowing about numerous film related topics. Somehow I ended up defending the latest X-Men film. Now while I enjoyed X-Men: First Class , it is not necessarily a film I would usually go out of my way to defend. However, I found myself championing the film nonetheless. Like all good discussions about film, the conversation evolved into an [...]

I love horror movies. I also love their soundtracks. It always amazes me how many soundtracks to great (and...not so great) horror movies end up going out of print! A well-crafted horror movie soundtrack can be just as memorable and creepy as the movie's villain. Think of a movie like Jaws or Halloween , those movies are scarier because of their amazing scores! It's a shame that so many soundtracks to lesser horror films have become lost over the years. While I'll be the first to admit that none of the soundtracks I'm [...]

Not sure if I should dance or hide in fear. Download: John Carpenter - Halloween Theme Song (RHYTHMIX Remix)

It seems like everyone is really enjoying that new movie Drive . I haven't seen yet but it has the bro from Malcom in the Middle / Breaking Bad and also that the guy from The Notebook , I am sure it's a good movie. With songs from College, Kavinsky, Desire and The Chromatics; the soundtrack also looks fantastic. Johnny Jewel from Glass Candy/ Chromatics/ Desire put up a special edit of the Chromatics song on his Soundcloud for download. It's definitely a very cinematic, almost John Carpenter-esque type of Disco. Highly enjoyable. [...]

South London's Boy 8-Bit is a relatively unknown (despite getting fanfare from people like Thom Yorke) producer who trades in chirpy, chippy dance floor bangers. Though the moniker came from early in his career, he's since branched out to UK bass, funky and dubstep genres while occasionally referencing retro-electronics. His latest release, July's Madrigal EP, is four songs of Boy 8-Bit doing what he does best, seamlessly blending catchiness with late-nite wobble and John Carpenter, making for some required listening on your next Saturday night. Johnny O'Donnell and Sacramento by Michele McManmon The night air buzzed around The Echo Thursday evening as a celebration of Johnny O'Donnell's EP release "Masquerade" on White Noise was about to kick off. The evening held an eclectic line up of unique bands with different sounds. Die hard music lovers stayed the whole night and the short attention span LA crowd floated in and out like flies throughout the night. Head bopping and cat calls gave the bands some deserved appreciation throughout the night. The room slowly began to [...]
