John Common solo shows are always fun, but guest appearances by members of The Reals made this one a bit more special. Possibly the last show Rainville played before disbanding, this Swallow Hill performance was atypical of most, foregoing raucous alt-country for an acoustic presentation of their material. Several of these songs were penned just prior to this show, so this recording captures their only performance (though a few may have squeezed into the catalog of John Common's next project, Goodnight Tulsa). Six months after the Denver show, John Common brought his grandiose Beautiful Empty CD release show to the Fox in Boulder. Once again, the evening was packed full of artistic energy, from sculptures and photography exhibits in the lobby, to short films and documentaries which premiered during set changes. All told, there were six videos showcased, many of which can be found on John's YouTube channel . This lineup of Blinding Flashes of Light was slightly different than previous incarnations I've seen, and filled to the brim with guests (see below). A very special [...]

John Common brought Blinding Flashes of Light to the Oriental stage last week for a showcase of material from their upcoming album (planned for release in May 2009). The full lineup of BFOL musicians is nothing less than stellar, drawing on artists well-known for their contributions in other local bands: Jess De Nicola Mefford - vocals, keys Wes Michaels - cello Carl Sorensen - drums Jimmy Stofer - bass, vocals Jon Wirtz - piano, organ, melodica, accordion, xylophone If you're the hands-on type, right on the heels of the PKO [...]

Here's the final set from Ubisububi last weekend, a fun performance by John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light that highlights a slew of new material from their upcoming album. Brian Carney posted a nice review (along with more photos) on the Denver Post's Reverb blog . Here's one of several sets I captured at this year's Westword Music Showcase- John Common over at Dazzle. All the venues were pretty crowded (a good thing), and Dazzle was no exception. Instead of hassling with a lot of gear, I clipped a pair of mics to a drink glass on the table and let 'em roll. The results weren't bad, all things considered. Digging into the vaults for this show, which closed out my run of concerts in 2006 and goes into the books as one of my favorite musical experiences for that year... As a long-time Tom Waits fan, I was super-psyched when John Common told me of the initial plans to organize a tribute at the Mercury Cafe . A cast of top-notch Denver musicians was invited to perform some of their favorite Waits tunes. To sweeten the pot (and after weeks of rehearsing), John and his band topped off the night with a [...]
