Last month I announced the end of the In Memoriam column. The reaction, by comments and messages via email and Facebook, surprised me. I had been under the impression, acquired by the few comments they received and the very average hits recorded, that the feature was only mildly popular (which serves to stress the importance to comment on posts in features you enjoy). The labour required for the In Memoriam feature remains prohibitive, but by cutting out what really took a lot of time – researching and collating the music and pictures – I can still provide a [...]

Fridays 'round these parts typically see gobs of remixes. Today didn't seem right posting a "Friday Remixes," partly due to the fact that this entire weekend most people will be celebrating Christmas with family, friends and loved ones. I plan on doing the bulk of my shopping today and my procrastinating has taken me as far out as possible. No matter how hard I try to fight it every year, I fall into the same trap. Saturday will be full of football from morning till nighttime. I'm in the championship game of my fantasy league, so I'll be [...]
Country music singers sure do love their Christmas songs. Now why is that? I reckon it has a little bit to do with the holiday's celebration of all things traditional, and down home-y, and old-

No better music for enjoying a sunny weekend in Colorado than John Denver. I happened to come across this Youth Lagoon cover of "Goodbye Again" over at Brooklyn Vegan and though I'd share. Definitely an interesting combo, but somehow it seems to work just fine. The Soundcloud embed from BV below is downloadable, so please feel free to grab it. Happy weekend... Geluid: Youth Lagoon - Goodbye Again (John Denver) // Da-ag! Tot ziens! Doeg! Sayonara!
Youth Lagoon covered John Denver's " Goodbye Again " for his Sirius XMU session, and the song, to an extent, reveals a touchpoint I hadn't noticed before. Huh. Yeah, this totally works. Grab a download of the track after the jump. Read More...

Hear the stellar John Denver cover Trevor Powers did for Sirius XMU.
As Trevor Powers puts it, John Denver is "cheesy as hell", but Youth Lagoon decided to cover Denver's "Goodbye Again" anyway for Sirius. This is the clearest we could ever hear vocals from the man, and it's sounds just as good as everything off The Year of Hibernation . Youth Lagoon - "Goodbye Again" (John Denver Cover)

Youth Lagoon covered John Denver at a recent session for Serius XMU and we've been waiting for the tune to surface. Alas, here it is. Bursting with earnestness and sincearity, you might not look at John Denver the same way again. Enjoy "Goodbye Again" below.

The traditional country stars — Conway Twitty, George Jones, Tammy Wynette Charlie Rich, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride — were still selling many records in the 1970s, and periodically crossed over to the pop charts. Singers like Donna Fargo evoked the good old days with happy songs like The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA. These were still the Opry years — in fact, in 1972 the Grand Ole Opry opened a theme park called Opryland, and wo years later moved out of its long-time home, the Ryman Theatre, to Opryland. But the Nashville scene no longer monopolised country, [...]
This is from The John Denver Collection, Vol 1, Take Me Home Country Roads.

John Denver... Too Cool For School Here are two remixes that I've been listening to the past week or so. One is from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosoars, who's track 'Trouble' we featured yesterday. Today's song is his newest single, due out in about two weeks on Polydor. Yesterday I mentioned that TEED and Joe Goddard are very much contemporaries, and this is a prime example of that. Here's Goddard's remix of 'Garden'. Buy it on October 16th. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosoars - Garden Secondly [...]

Maybe I'm a little immature, but 5 years after hearing this, it still cracks me up. Or maybe there's just something timeless about demonstrating the mind's natural dirtiness via pretend- censoring the squeaky-cleanest things. Either way, it reaffirms the power of an overarching authorial voice and its godlike ability to bend any text to its will. John Denver- Annie's Song (WFMU edit)
There was an article in the paper today about how the move to name a peak in the Rockies after John Denver has hit a snag. It seems the government says it is policy to avoid adding names to peaks in federal wilderness areas though a peak in Denali Park was recently named after Senator Ted Stevens. Another group, against the naming, is just anti-Denver saying his music is too syrupy. One person called him a human muppet. I used to stand with the syrupy group but have since changed my mine. I am again a John Denver fan.
