Last year, Cian Nugent came to a lot of people's attention with his full-length album Doubles. With just two songs at 45 minutes long, the album was no hop skip and jump easy release. It was an album of steely guitar music inspired by the American fingerstyle legend John Fahey with a spot-on full-band diversions over its running time. This new 73 is much more easily digestable but no less impactful. A tense and taut acoustic rendition of Black Flag's 'My War' brings punk and folk into the same hands and hinting at [...]
Hi friends. I hope each of your individual weekends were eventful. Mine sure was. Wait, what did I do on - oh, right. I celebrated my five-year LA anniversary on Friday night (sure it was a night early, but who cares?) at El Chavo. It was a pretty good time until it wasn't, at which [...]

Dedicou o
AFTER THE BALL JOHN FAHEY (EUA) Edição original: Reprise Produtor(es): John Fahey, Denny Bruce discogs allmusic wikipedia Segundo e último álbum pela "major" Reprise, "After the Ball" apresenta Fahey numa curiosa (e arriscada) aventura pelos terrenos mais acessíveis aos ouvidos do grande público. Tal como no anterior disco para a Reprise, "Of Rivers and Religion", há aqui muito dixieland, com

Photo: Dagmar Gebers Bonobo by HANS REICHEL In Europe, Hans Reichel is revered as an innovator and guitarist on par with folks like Derek Bailey and John Fahey. He invented his own unique language on the instrument - but he didn't stop there. He radically modified and created wild new hybrid guitars that produced sounds like the koto, organ, harpsichord, chimes, and even electronics. All of this in the service of extending the expressive possibilities of his music. We're slightly embarrassed to [...]

John Fahey and Peter Lang - Freight Train (by peterwlang ) Two masters at work here, covering Libba's Freight Train on Minnesota Public Television in the Fall of 1977.

Ho ho ho, assholes! With the Christmas holiday coming up this weekend and we're already two days deep up on the Hanukkah tip, it's very much time to drop the annual The Decibel Tolls Holiday Mixer . You know the deal - a carefully curated collection of skewed, brain-burning, monolithic Christmas gems that totally sleigh. Get it?! Sleigh? Slay? It's a homophone, you guys! Ugh... never mind. Tough crowd. Anyway, these yule-time canticles exalted on high can crush shopping malls and magically spike egg nog, true story. For this year's mixer, you'll recognize you'll recognize some jams from previous year's mixers, [...]
Protest movements often result in music that is repetitive and uninspiring, if only for the small number of widely identifiable protest songs. You shouldn't be forced to listen to "The Times They Are a-Changin'" twenty times per day. Levine, who worked at Zuccotti Park's info desk, compiles a dozen songs that better fit this movement, and many others as well

Regardless of your spiritual allegiance or thoughts regarding freezing temperatures, the winter/holiday season is an interesting one. There's something about this period of the calendar year that just feels different from everything else. Summer has the vibe and energy of hot, sticky freedom; spring lives and breathes with the promise of a reawakening; and fall is all about getting in line and preparation. Winter, though, is slightly more splintered. Some people see Christmas/Hanukkah/the Winter Solstice/Festivus as a time for family and friends and celebrating the inherent warmth and goodness in us all. Others view these as tired traditions, [...]

Frankly, I'm amazed that Duluth's Charlie Parr is not, you know, FAMOUS, or at least better known. Of course, it's the way of the world that major talent can languish in obscurity for years, but Charlie has been at it for at least a decade now. His back catalogue is all over the place, between deletions, unavailability, and various comps for different independent record companies (there's even have an 'Irish-only' one, 2009's Too Much Liquor, Not Enough Gasoline on Independent Records). In 2001, he released his debut album Criminals & Sinners , followed [...]

American born Robbie Basho was one of the main pioneers of introducing the acoustic steel string guitar in America. His guitar style was quite remarkable, possessing a dexterous, finger-picked guitar technique, influenced heavily by Sarod playing and the studies he undertook with the Indian virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan. Basho had an interest in Indian music after hearing Ravi Shankar, whom he first came across in 1962. Basho brought out his debut LP "The Seal of the Blue Lotus" in 1965 on John Fahey's Takoma Records. Fahey was a very influential character, coining the genre ' American Primitivism [...]

It's been a while, hasn't it? Today's list is nostalgic, and includes a track by John Fahey (who I initially discovered on this very website). It's slightly warped playlist to listen to on a sunday drive. Just like the pumpkins in the photo, it's earthy and organic, but in a slightly bent and malformed way. Folky, country, electronic and exotic. A few of these original pressings fetch a mighty dollar online, so enjoy the rips. 1. John Sangster - Sunrise (Australia And All That Jazz Vol.1) [...]
