If there can be one thing said about 2011 it is that it was a great year for actresses. Films like Melancholia , Meeks Cutoff , Another Earth , Hanna , and The Help , just to name a few, all showcased fully realized female characters. Martha Marcy May Marlene is another film that falls into this category as it features one of the best breakthrough performances of the year. The film's title, Martha Marcy May Marlene , refers to the names that the lead character Martha (Elizabeth [...]

I never thought I'd love a movie starring an Olsen sister. But then, until this year, I thought Mary-Kate and Ashley were the only ones. Neither of them appears in Martha Marcy May Marlene , last January's Sundance favorite for which the younger Olsen sister, Elizabeth, 22, has deservedly collected Oscar buzz over the course of the last 12 months. I wouldn't be surprised if the film, which is Olsen's debut, ends up being one of my five favorite movies of 2011. I must admit, when I put the screener into the DVD player, I wasn't [...]
Video: John Hawkes: "Marcy's Song" (Jackson C. Frank Cover) While watching the trailer to director Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene the other day, one moment caught my ears by surprise: actor John Hawkes ( Me and You and Everyone We Know , Winter's Bone ) singing a chilling cover of Jackson C. Frank's "Marcy's Song." As it turns out, Hawkes, who conjures up a bit of both Frank and Townes Van Zandt in the performance, has a long history in music in addition to his lauded film career. [...]
Today a music video for Martha Marcy May Marlene was released, and there's a good chance it will make you want to see the film even more.
This, is Mont Saint Michel. Which, thanks to Rick Steves, the Fabio of travel, is one of most incredible things I've seen all month. If you're intuitive, this gives away a simple and very embarrassing fact: that given all the possible things I could be doing in life, much less the television shows I could [...]

John Hawks is back with Tape #2. And that's not a hipster reference to cassette tapes; this is actually a tape with hiss and a bit of flutter. A Bible In The Thorns P.S. Swedesplease was mention in this CNN article yesterday. But the article didn't have the balls to mention I don't really write about any of the mainstream artists they mentioned and they didn't have the balls to step out on a limb and mention a deserving underachiever like John Hawks or any of [...]
I fell down the rabbit hole of the Internet a few weeks ago, while catching up with A Bright Wall In A Dark Room, a brilliant film blog. I was reading Bebe Ballroom's essay on Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know....

Winter's Bone Recently a co-worker and I were discussing the state of movies in 2009. My co-worker was commenting on what a poor year it has been for cinema. The summer box-office numbers were used as validation of this point. While I agree the summer movie season was less than desirable, I firmly believe that 2009 has been an excellent year for quality films. Far better than the last year's crop of films. One of the films that really blew me away this year was [...]
I haven't even finished watching this video yet, but it's so cool I won't waste any time.
