![[Listen] John K. Samson- The Last And](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2900271_lg.jpg)
by teepoo John K. Samson is better known as the guitarist/vocalist frontman of Manitoba band The Weakerthans. The following track comes off Provincial Route 222 EP , second in a series of solo EPs released by the dude. I actually prefer his solo tracks over his work with the band. There's something about the simplicity of the arrangements that tug at your heart. John K. Samson- The Last And

Usually when a touring musician spends his nights completing someone else's thoughts and creating textures to help define a mood, the time allotted for their own compositions results in reserved, spare arrangements. A needed retreat from the road and the chance to be alone with their own thoughts. For Ottawa's Jim Bryson , those precious few moments of solitude resulted in some of the most prized songs in my collection, and a record that creaked with the love and uncertainty Jim felt in his apartment. With the upcoming release of [...]

The Last And - John K. Samson The Last And - John K. Samson ( Buy ) Indie rockers The Weakerthans are all about Canadian pride this year. As a whole, the group released Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre , a huge live cd/dvd recorded in their hometown of Winnipeg. As for front man John K. Samson , his recent EP Provincial Road 222 will guide you up north to the province of Manitoba without ever having to dust off your passport. His 4th solo [...]

If you've been following CBC Radio 22s Canada Songquest series this year, you know that music fans and artists from across the country have been suggesting streets and roads across this great nation that deserve to be immortalized in song. Winnipeg's John K. Samson seems to have gotten the jump on all of us with the release of his Provincial Route 222 EP early last month. It's the second in The Weakerthans front man's series of recordings focused on the streets and highways of Manitoba, and it's a succinct, lush [...]
Weakerthans frontman John K. Samson is a master storyteller who excels at describing in vivid, poignant detail the little moments that define the ups and downs of lives and relationships. Provincial Road 222 is the second in his series of solo 7-inch EPs devoted to his hometown of Winnipeg. [...]
Last November, The Weakerthans ' frontman John K. Samson released City Route 85 , a solo EP that told tales of a major roadway in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Now, that series adds another lane of traffic with the September release of Provincial Road 222 (via PunkNews.org ). The album will feature the Correction Line Ensemble, a six-person pop ensemble that happens to feature his wife and fellow singer-songwriter Christine Fellows, and will be available as both a limited 73 and as a digital download. Nothing [...]

Provincial Road 222 runs alongside Lake Winnipeg north of the city. Tracks include "The Last And", "Step
With John K. Samson doing his solo thing , it seems as if The Weakerthans are going to be spending the winter and spring quietly playing as Jim Bryson's solo band for his new album (oh, and touring Australia). But if you're nostalgic for some more goodness from their previous four albums, then you can spend your spring time rehashing it all with the soon-to-be-released Live At The Burton Cummings Theatre CD/DVD. Recorded during an April 2009 show in their home base of Winnipeg, Manitoba [...]

You'll have to forgive me, as I'm still kind of reeling from the Saints improbable & miraculous wining of Super Bowl 44 on Sunday night. As such, I don't have a formal post for you today, so I thought I'd give you a bit of a Tuesday treat by posting a few songs from Bahamas & John K. Samson that I captured during their show at last month's In The Dead of Winter festival. I wish I had more songs, or rather, more songs in better quality, but hey, for free.99, it's not a bad deal. [...]

I don't know about you, but last night's IDOW opener didn't disappoint your friends here at the hill. We tucked into a table at the back of the intimate Bus Stop Theatre, and even though the weather outside wasn't overly wintry, based on the packed room, we weren't the only ones interested in some musical mid-winter therapy. And that therapy was bountiful, as Toronto's The Wooden Sky backed up their selection to our year-end best of list with a "quiet" but very enthusiastic set of gems from their last album and even a [...]
With the annual IDOW festival kicking off this weekend, it's about time we got a more in depth look at the lineup. We already offered up our thoughts on the lineup in general - seeing names like Justin Rutledge, Bahamas, The Wooden Sky, CR Avery, Jim Bryson and local talent like Jon Mckiel present and accounted for means that IDOW will continue it's rapid maturation into one of Hali's best festivals. Even with all those terrific acts, the name that will draw most people's interest is that of John K. Samson . [...]
Coming in just under the wire... The top 10 best albums of 2009, according to TRUST ME ON THIS. 1. Alex Kapranos and company have released a [...]

mp3: John K. Samson - Heart Of The Continent City Route 85 is a three-song EP and is the first of several 7"s Weakerthans frontman John K. Samson plans to release that are inspired by the roads in his home city of Winnipeg. The opener, "Heart of the Continent," is a wonderful ballad, complete with delicate finger-picking and Samson's gift for lyrical storytelling. It's a perfect, softer compliment to his more pop-inspired work with The Weakerthans. This 7" kind of flew under the [...]

Amazon.com is offering $3 in free mp3s through tomorrow, November 30. You might ask, "What can I buy with $3 - a third of an album?" Well, it turns out that many albums are $5 or less, including some for only $2. If you're truly at a loss about what to download, I used my $3 [...]

Norman Wong Even though he coined it himself, I often wonder if Joel Gibb regrets encouraging the use of "gay church folk music" as a description for the music of The Hidden Cameras . Certainly they got a lot of mileage out of it in the band's earlier days, as it was both attention grabbing and accurate, but now, four albums in, it probably deserves to be retired. It's not that it's no longer descriptive - Gibb is still gay (one assumes), it's still music and it's still built on foundations of folk and church traditions [...]
