Filed under: Exclusive , The Hit List Michael Ochs Archives (2) We've written about the musicians who are super smart or spent time as teachers, but this year for back-to-school season, we decided to look at the famous artists who made it big without graduating high school. There are dozens of big names who never earned a diploma, so we decided to narrow it down to the ones who have interesting stories: The Beatle who [...]
Love this video, and I truly miss Mr. Hooker. I was lucky enough to see him before he passed away.

click image to see books, cds and mp3s On this day back in 1917 John Lee Hooker, blues singer and guitarist was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He was the son of cotton-sharecroppers. He told of learning to play the blues from his stepfather and other blues men that he met in the Mississippi Delta. He is reported to have constructed his first instrument from strings made of rubber inner tube nailed to a barn. He left home and the tender age of 14, and started singing in a gospel group. In 1943 he moved to Detroit [...]

As you might have noticed if you've tried to download any live shows here in the past few days, Demonoid is down. No one really knows how long it will be down, but in the meantime I'm still trying to figure out the best way to link to those shows. Bayfiles is great in that [...]
Not only is Free Beer & Chicken one of the greatest titles of all time but it is one of the funkiest things you'll ever hear. John Lee Hooker was a really funky dude. Miles Davis, a guy who knew a few things about being funky, as well as free beer and chicken, supposedly told John something like "you'd have to be buried up to your neck in mud to be any funkier." For years I had admired this album from afar. I would look at the cover on line and wonder what it sounded like. The CD's been in [...]
2-6-4-8 who do we appreciate!? People with dyslexia. I'm learning to appreciate the quiet side of life. Like not so much drinking. Like showing up to work without a hangover. Like having a few extra bills in my wallet. It's a good thing, too, because I'm about to drop $2400 to fix my car this [...]

Two mix tapes in one week? Why, you must be the luckiest children on all the Internet! This should be a busy and exciting week, as I'll be leaving in a few hours to cover the NAB Show in Vegas. If you don't know what NAB is, well, you're not alone. I didn't really know [...]

I had such a strong affinity for early delta blues, it really took me a while to warm up to post-war rhythm & blues. My natural snobbish instinct was to agree with Son House's rant in Festival! . And I still do think that he's right. It's not the BLUSE. Upbeat, with rhythm and energy... Call it jump blues if you want, but for so many days, it's what keeps me going. [ FYI - that's Little Walter on the cover ] [...]
