Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels are ubiquitous in Hollywood these days; Spider-Man is getting another reboot, as is Superman. Clash of the Titans had its remake and a sequel is in the works; even Footloose , The Thing , Conan the Barbarian , and Straw Dogs were reborn this past year with disappointing results. To make things worse, My Fair Lady , The Warriors , Red Dawn , and Escape from New [...]

Recently my wife had a much needed "girls night out" while I stayed home with our little guy. Part of the festivities included the ladies taking in the recent Footloose remake. Seeing as she was a big fan of the original Footloose film, I decided to get my wife's, who I shall refer to as Dancing D for this piece, reaction to director Craig Brewer's adaptation of the 1984 film. CS: How did you and the other ladies find the film? Dancing D [...]
A two-headed movie review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring James Franco, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow, and Freida Pinto.

A long day in Hall H deserves a long writeup Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be hitting theaters this coming August 5th, and if you're like me, you'll be counting down the days till you get to see it. In a new extended clip released today, we get to see more of the genetically altered Caesar , played to perfection by Andy Serkis , come to the aid of John Lithgow 's character who helped raise him since infancy. James Franco plays geneticist Will Rodman who [...]

Blow Out - Criterion Edition (Today, Franklin Laviola continues his Film Projections series with an analysis of Brian DePalma's classic thriller Blow Out , recently released on DVD and Blu-Ray via the Criterion Collection . For more by Mr. Laviola, please see his archives on Frontier Psychiatrist.) There are few contemporary filmmakers who have made such striking use of the widescreen format as Brian DePalma. This was the overwhelming sense I had in April, while enjoying a series of his thrillers, curated by BAMcinematek . [...]
Rise of the Planet of the Apes Although I was secretly hoping for something more along the lines of the The Simpsons ' Planet of the Apes musical , I must admit that I am really looking forward to this film. Abduction This film feels like a cross between Hanna and Enemy of the State . Taylor Lautner will have an uphill battle convincing people that he is a viable action star. Still, the strong [...]

I am not sure how to feel about this. The original 5 Planet of the Apes films were among my favorite sci-fi films of all time. The remake with Mark Wahlberg fully sucked. The upcoming prequel titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes is poised to hit theaters August 5th, and to be honest, I'm worried. It stars James Franco as scientist Will Rodman (sounds like a porn name) who's experiments on Altzheimer's [...]

Marge I amuse myself by saying things to my kids that are either double entendres , or at least parodies of common, and generally vulgar, expressions. I suppose I prefer parodies. They come more easily to me. For example, at night, when we are just doing a quick "wash cloth" bath, I usually say "Show me your pits!" I have never been to New Orleans, and there's really no need for them to wash their arm pits, but for some reason we do it. It's a good excuse [...]
I saw dozens of long lines at Comic-Con, but one of the craziest queues was for the Showtime series Dexter, which begins its fourth season Sept. 27.
Oh man. I just watched the extended Comic-Con trailer for Season 4 of the best series on cable television, Dexter , and just ______ in my pants. John Lithgow as the ongoing serial-killer/rapist? Couldn't be happier about it since he's always been a creep. Watch this soon, because it's hot...if you catch my drift.

This week the contrast podcast keeps it clean with a selection of tunes suitable for the children among us. Check it out here . Next week's theme will celebrate the cp's first birthday. Happy early natal day, Tim! Send your best birthday-related tunage to take part in this special occasion. As you may have guessed, I happen to love kids' songs, as long as they don't talk down to kids and aren't sickly sweet. As a result, my favorites [...]
