Filed under: News , Exclusive Brittney Shepherd Sooner or later it happens to all of us. One moment we're enjoying the caffeinated pick-me-up of an Americano and the next, coffee is splashed across our computer. Josh McIntyre, the mastermind behind Toronto's lo-fi-loving Little Girls , knows this scenario all too well. In fact, a recent mishap with a cup of joe almost ruined his latest project, a cover of experimental synth-pop composer John Maus ' track [...]
John Maus (who?) talks some serious nonsense over at Pitchfork in the latest 'guest list' feature. Here's his take on the old fashioned brick-and-mortar record stores: You don't know how happy it makes me that the days of the record store are coming to an end. $20 for an LP? Do you remember going to the record store and not getting what you want because there was no other place to get it? Now we can get it all for free, and I think that's wonderful. There was always something really depressing to [...]

Compiling a list like our recent Best Albums of 2011 (So Far) typically leaves one with two thoughts. The first is: which records that have yet to come out will appear on the year-end list? With one of our favorite artists seemingly announcing a new album every day (Jay-Z & Kanye West, Girls, Active Child, M83, Feist, Pusha T, Dum Dum Girls, St. Vincent ...), the answer is likely: lots of them. The second, more troubling question, is: which albums did we miss? In the 21st century the constant deluge of new music can be overwhelming, [...]
Is this what they mean when they say "all press is good press"? John Maus is lighting up the Twitchboard this week because of a positively horrendous interview he conducted with Pitchfork. In what ap

Reposted w/ individual mp3s (in case you don't want the whole mix): Clif started the Something for Later mixes as an outlet for longer or more subdued musical pieces, and they were initially posted on the now defunct Paper Crane Collective blog site. I decided to take up the project but refocus on experimental rock, avant garde pop, freak folk, and electronic music. Volume 3 compiles track from the mostly the first half of 2011: Something for Later Vol. 3 - 2011 [click to download ZIP file] [...]

Frank Yang What happens when The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart meet the pains of being busted up in shoulder? You take advantage of the fact that said band used an off day on their touring itinerary to play an in-store a day before their official show, so as to avoid having to stand around The Opera House for three hours, possibly/probably looped on meds. Which is basically what happened on Monday night at Sonic Boom. Despite the fact that Pains' self-titled debut was one of my favourites of [...]

This one's been a long time coming, I know. My apologies to Cunningham, and anybody else who's been waiting. It's not that there's been any shortage of dope shit dropping lately - Theophilus London's full-length debut, and quality projects from Washed Out, Little Dragon, Dom Kennedy and Beyonce to name a few. August tends to sneak up on you with the realization that summer actually ends, and once again today, it hit me. Still, fleeting though it may be, every summer deserves a soundtrack. So here's a taste of ours. [...]

Honestly? I couldn't really get into John Maus' long-winded 'We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves' – an album released in June 2011. The same instrument – possibly an organ or some ancestor or cousin thereof – dominates this collection of music, making it incredibly difficult to hear Maus' possibly Morrissey-sounding voice (which can only be a shame). John's voice is like a faint, annoying noise in the background – like the humming of a computer or white-noise. While every song sounds instrumentally different, his vocals remain stagnant and uninteresting. I'm a huge fan of vocals and [...]

Given the fact that one of our editors has spent the month of July in sub-optimal physical condition, some of our regular columns have been turning up a bit late this month. Among these is our top 5 videos column for June, which finally sees the light of day at the end of July. Its arrival in the midst of a suffocating heat wave seems appropriate, however, as the month's best videos include many distractions from summer's dog days, including snowy landscapes, barren trees, and school. Be advised at always that the work environment in non-ideal for enjoying this particular [...]

John Maus has a lot of ideas. This much must be evident to anyone who has seen the thirty-one year old Minnesotan being interviewed. You can watch as his brain races; he stammers and tumbles over his words in his effort for clarity, hedge phrases such as 'y'know' 'or something' and 'aaaaaaaah' being delivered with equal pace and frequency as his fascinating, insightful profundities on music, philosophy and culture. It's rare to see an interviewer get much more of a word in; such is the aggressive power of his intellect. It's an incredibly arresting thing to witness, and I [...]
A spoonful of sugar makes the '80s synth-pop go down. I was born in the late '80s. Maybe that's the reason why John Maus' junior album titled "We Must Become Pitiless Censors of Ourselves" was so alluring to me- I don't remember the decade in any special way, so the 'nostalgic' goodness of this album lets me form my own mental play land. "Hey Moon" has a lullaby-like melody to it, inviting you to a place you've been before, but even in its familiarity it is differently. The female vocal accompaniment is crucial and the echo of [...]

John Maus proves that the hysteria and hype around his music his well deserved, the man is a stage animal !!!! Watch | John Maus - Maniac live at Glassland

I had to hold myself back from posting more than just one song from John Maus' We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves album, soo many great songs on this album, loving the melody on this one, pick it up if [...]
