It seems like NO ONE knows about this show! The original venue (941 Theatre) got shut down.. so the promoter had to scramble to get this someplace else.. which is, insanely, the Starlight Ballroom. Here's the details: Thursday, Nov 19th / 8:30pm @ Polaris Jack Oblivian Jack "Oblivian" Yarber of The Tearjerkers was a key figure in the influential, Memphis-based Compulsive Gamblers and the legendary '90s garage-punk band The Oblivians. Though, to only ramble on about Yarber?s work with The Oblivians [...]

Well. We've arrived in Minnesota and caught Restauvant, Left Lane Cruiser and Radio Moscow at the opening night of the Deep Blues Festival. I am gonna have some guest posts for y'all over the next few days and I thought, "Why not start it off with someone from Minnesota?". Enter Neil Smith to add a little class the site. Hope y'all enjoy. Thanks to Autosy4 for letting me stick my nose in over here and sniff around. This is one [...]

Howdy folks, and gather round. This is Brian from Big Rock Candy Mountain reporting in from the concrete fields of Chicago. We're probably best known for our old-timey Country and Blues fixation, but for our first post here in Paradise we figgered we'd get a little contemporary with our favorite song of the past few years, from one of the best damn Rock'n'Roll bands in the land, John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives . Straight outta Memphis, the band mix the keening wail of pedal steel with a Replacements-meets-The Oblivians bar bash grittiness. "Lookin' [...]

***The above image was taken backstage at last month's Tennessee Shines and features the show's host Jim Lauderdale with blues legend Pinetop Perkins. Perkins is just one of the amazing artists who has graced the stage of The Bijou Theatre for a Tennessee Shines performance. I've written about most of them here, but I haven't come anywhere close to giving you the full lowdown on the still-new monthly concert series. The cover story of this week's Metro Pulse goes in [...]

Some times good things happen to the bands that deserve them and such is the case with John Paul Keith and his One Four Fives out of Memphis, Tenn. Having recently signed with Fat Possum records imprint, Big Legal Mess Records , they are now set to release their debut LP, Spills & Thrills . Building on a more Jerry Lee Lewis than Elvis 50's rock and roll sound, John Paul and Co. seem hellbent on putting the roll back into rock-n-roll. The upbeat and innocent feel to this album is a welcome sound [...]

There's a new album from John Paul Keith and his ever trusty One Four Fives called Spills and Thrills. It's full of stripped down 50's/early 60's style rock and roll that manages to stay the right side of pastiche using joie de vivre and some fantastic playing. All the talk of recession seems to have simplified my music tastes of late - this and James Hunter have soundtracked my return to work. Dig the twang. Listen: John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives - Rock and Roll Will Break Your Heart [...]

As usual well past due, here's the latest (and not-so-latest) from the Licorice Pizza mailbox. There's a pretty good selection of stuff here; something for everyone's palate, I think. My personal pick of the litter is the tune from Brooklyn's TK Webb & the Visions, "Teen is Still Shaking." This is a spacey metal song with Dylan-esque vocals. My vote for weirdest song is Lexicon's hip-hop take on the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated." And winning the honor for "Singer I'd Most Like to Leave Everything For" is Kirsten Price. Like always, follow the [...]

I think, no, I know, I've mentioned before that I read every single PR email and listen to my band email I get. The signal to noise ratio pretty much sucks but the fact is I started this site and all of those emails (and believe me, it's a lot) are a sign of a little bit of success of the site so I feel I owe it to myself and the bands to a least read the email. Besides, sometimes you get some really cool little gems out of it and such is the case of John Paul Keith [...]

A man blessed with three first names is rare indeed, and this one is armed with what looks like a 52 telecaster a crack team of ace musicians and the kind of big love of honky tonk songwriting shared by lonesome favourites Two Dollar Pistols. Check the live session out on that link below, this is a band that I very much want to see if they make it to the UK. They sent me an email informing me they were going to release a 7" record, you can buy it on that link down there. In an ideal [...]
