The late BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was perhaps the ultimate music tastemaker. For the better part of his incredible career that spanned over five decades, Peel championed new music from various genres from all over the world. A few years before his death I had the pleasure of interviewing Peel, and his passion for everything from obscure acid house tracks to death metal was as infectious during our lengthy phone chat as it was on his radio show. Mr. Peel was a prolific British DJ, broadcaster, record producer and journalist, who did more for spreading experimental and new music than anyone else I can name. Starting on Tuesday, the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts will begin uploading details of the late DJ's cherished vinyl, unveiling 2,600 albums over the next six months. Every week, the Centre will expand the scope of its virtual museum, adding another 100 records, covering everything from Appalachian mountain music to zouk. "It's a very personal look at John's collection," producer Charlie Gauvain said. I doubt many people could boast a bigger record collection than the late, great, John Peel . The legendary DJ was rumoured to have around 70,000 records, singles and CD’s in his collection and earlier this year there was talk of these records being made available to the public. Well, as of tomorrow the first 100 records of the collection will be made available via an Arts Council funded "interactive online museum" called The Space . Listeners can read Peel’s notes, listen to archive sessions and watch interviews with musicians and performers from over the years. [...]
