Finally, the week has arrived for the official release of Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows : Songs of John Prine . By now, most of you have likely heard My Morning Jacket's take on All The Best . Believe me, that track only begins to hint at the embarrassment of riches on this record. If you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick a favorite, I'd still be hard pressed to choose between Lambchop's version of Six O’Clock News and JTE's gut-punch reading of Far From Me [...]

As we posted back in April, a new John Prine tribute album, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows, due out this month has an allstar cast of artists contributing to this compliation of classic tunes from John's discography including Conor Oberst, Josh Ritter, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, the Avett Brothers, Lambchop and 8 other artists, including My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, aka Yim Yames. Although the album doesnt drop until next week, you can have a first listen now on NPR [...]
My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, The Avett Brothers, Conor Oberst and Sara Watkins are among twelve those honoring the enduring songcraft of John Prine with Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine arriving June 22 (Oh Boy Records). The new tribute comes forty years after the legendary Chicago songwriter entered the studio to record his self-titled debut album, a collection considered by some to be one of the finest songwriter discs ever and boasting such classic songs as [...]

You have to be a pretty big folk fan to be in a band called Monsters of Folk. This is why it’s no surprise to find Conor Oberst among the likes of Justin Vernon, My Morning Jacket, Old Crow Medicine Show and Deer Tick on a tribute album to one of folk’s greats, John Prine . Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows drops later this month, and features 12 covers of Prine’s songs by those mentioned above and more. Oberst’s contribution, “Wedding Day in Funeralville,” is a bouncy two-minute romp you can hear below. [...]
This Icelandic chanteuse melts your heart with gorgeous singing on three covers.

The first time I heard Conor Oberst (or anyone) perform one of John Prine’s songs was during a Bright Eyes show at the Great American Music Hall on the Cassadaga tour. Immediately struck by the lyrics (“You’ll be waitin’ on a phone call at the wrong end of a broom”), I rushed home to look up the tune—now known to be “Crazy As a Loon”—and have been a fan ever since. It came as no surprise, then, to find Oberst and his Mystic Valley Band on the new tribute album, Broken [...]

Bonnaroo can be such an exhausting adventure and Saturday was no exception. With a heat index nearly to 100, one had to do whatever could be done to avoid the heat. Sitting at the main stage waiting for the legendary Jimmy Cliff to perform I could feel the sweat just dripping of my face and for that matter, everywhere else on my body. [Jimmy Cliff] Nevertheless, it was an opportunity of a lifetime to get to see the reggae legend from Kingston, Jamaica [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Midway through this year's Bonnaroo , following a monster anchor set by Kings of Leon on Thursday; noteworthy performances from the National and LCD Soundsystem ; and sets by legends such as John Prine and Jeff Beck , all 70,000 fans came together in the main field to get schooled by Stevie Wonder . Literally. "Here's what I'm gonna do," Wonder told the crowd. "This is gonna be called the Stevie [...]

Don't know about where you live, but in our neck of the woods summer's here and it's hot. Best thing to do on the weekend is hit the pool or lounge on the patio, pop the top on a cold one and put on a few hot platters. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are a Vermont-based band that's been knocking around for a few years. Their newest, simply titled Grace Potter and the Nocturnals , is a good calling card for those unfamiliar with the band's take on 1970s style rock, [...]

Have you ever completely stumbled across an album that you ended up absolutely loving? That happened to me with In Person & On Stage , the latest album (and second live release) from John Prine . I'm not even going to pretend; somehow Prine's 40+ year career has completely marched past my ears unnoticed. Until now. There are just some artists that are born story tellers. Johnny Cash comes to mind as a universal example that everyone should connect with. When Johnny sang about sleeping with his best friend's wife, even if it wasn't [...]

If you pay attention to the news, you know there's a catastrophe happening down south in the Gulf of Mexico. It started in late April, when an offshore oil well exploded and began leaking crude oil into the water. Since then as much as a million gallons continue to spill out each day, while the oil company feebly tries to stop the flow. Meanwhile the thick toxic stuff is washing into Gulf shorelines and threatens to kill wildlife, ruin the wetlands and destroy the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Americans. It seems to me that [...]
NPR Music strikes wonderfully again; they just announced that they'll be broadcasting over 40 sets from this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival beginning next Thursday. NPR Music, together with three partner public radio stations, sets up camp by the four main stages at this year’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, presenting three days of [...] Related posts: Bonnaroo 2010: Flaming Lips to Cover Dark Side of the Moon, Paul Simon 'Confirmed' Video: The Flaming Lips on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, 10/16/09 [...]
Even the most casual of music fans can rattle off songs and albums from a number of the more famous singer-songwriters. Then, you have those that are considered "musicians singer-songwriters," ones that fly slightly under the radar, but are well respected among their peers. Near the top of that list would probably be John Prine , who has been putting out critically acclaimed albums since 1971 that feature his brand of wryly witty, story-heavy folk songs delivered in his unmistakable laid back vocal style. For those of you unfamiliar with [...]
I went through a bit of a John Prine phase a few years ago and have mucho respect for the man's music (it would have actually been perfect music for camping this past weekend). I think it's this song that brought me on board: Yim Yames joined John Prine on stage for Letterman last weekend to provide his sweet smooth voice to Prine's sweet rough voice, and it works great. In case you missed it last week or just want to watch it again, John Prine and Yim Yames (that's Jim James of My Morning Jacket) performed on the Late Show with David Letterman last Wednesday. Jim and the boys take on "All the Best" on the upcoming tribute to John Prine, Dirty Hearts & Dirty Windows, which is due to drop on June 22nd.

I did a double take earlier this week when I noticed the music guests scheduled for Wednesday's Letterman: John Prine with Yim Yames (Jim James) of My Morning Jacket. Much to my surprise, the song they sang is one of my all-time Prine favorites, "All The Best", which was actually the song that turned me on to John Prine back in my college years. The song was included on the soundtrack for Falling From Grace , a 1992 movie directed by and starring John Mellencamp and written by Larry McMurtry (Prine also appears in the film). [...]

Plus ca change, plus ce la meme chose... John Prine, "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore" - from the album John Prine (1971) Chorus: But your flag decal won't get you Into Heaven any more. They're already overcrowded From your dirty little war. Now Jesus don't like killin' No matter what the reason's for, And your flag decal won't get you Into Heaven any more. (via [...]
A few weeks back I was singing the praises of John Prine and talking up the forthcoming tribute Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows . Well, I didn't stumble across this until late yesterday, but the singing ex-mailman popped up on Letterman on Wednesday night, and he brought a friend that all the cool kids are gaga over these days. Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows comes out on June 22, and in my estimation, it's a must have. [...]
Tribute albums can be hit or miss. Some turns out spectacularly well, others miss the mark completely. The forthcoming tribute to American songwriter John Prine, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows (out June 22nd) falls somewhere in between. What I most look forward to with tribute albums is to hear how artists interpret a song in their own style. On the Prine tribute that comes in the form of
