I did a double take earlier this week when I noticed the music guests scheduled for Wednesday's Letterman: John Prine with Yim Yames (Jim James) of My Morning Jacket. Much to my surprise, the song they sang is one of my all-time Prine favorites, "All The Best", which was actually the song that turned me on to John Prine back in my college years. The song was included on the soundtrack for Falling From Grace , a 1992 movie directed by and starring John Mellencamp and written by Larry McMurtry (Prine also appears in the film). [...]

Back in April, we read about a new John Prine tribute album, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows, which features John Prine cover songs by Conor Oberst, Josh Ritter, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, the Avett Brothers, Lambchop and 8 other artists, including My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, aka Yim Yames. Late last night on Letterman, Prine performed a live version of “All the Best” — the song that MMJ frontman, Jim James, contributed to the tribute — with Jim James himself as his partner. [...]

Well, last night on the Late Show with David Letterman, Prine performed a live version of “All the Best” — the song the MMJ frontman contributed to the tribute — with James himself as his duet partner. I still don't understand this 'Yim Yames' thing, but it was funny to hear Letterman say it while introducing them. Check out "All The Best" from last night's Letterman. You normally don't see the artist subject to a tribute album supporting said tribute album with a live performance. But that's exactly what happened last night when legendary singer/songwriter John Prine supported the forthcoming release of Broken Hearts And Dirty Windows: Songs Of John Prine by performing his 1991 classic "All The Best" on The Late Show with David Letterman . All that being said, the performance ultimately turned out to as much of a tribute to Prine as the tribute album itself, with Prine's accompanist, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim [...]

I've had a great deal of respect for John Prine's contributions to music for a long time. It really wasn't until I heard In Person & On Stage, his forthcoming live album (out May 25th), that I got a full appreciation for his talent. Tracks like "She Is My Everything" demonstrate Prine's masterful song craftsmanship. "The Bottomless Lake" and others spotlight his incredible storytelling ability

"There's kind of two Blazes. A lot of people saw one or the other. There was the wild one. . . . And then there was the gentle, loving, caring one. I got to know both." ~ Townes Van Zandt Over the years of doing ninebullets, I've had the occasional emailer ask me if I'd ever heard of Blaze Foley. One was even so kind as to email me a collection of Blaze's songs. These emails were the first I'd ever heard of the man, but it's been [...]
I was introduced to John Prine several years ago when I heard Mason Jennings cover "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore" in San Diego. Since then I've become well acquainted with the man's music and come to love his wry and often cutting take on the American experience. So I was pretty excited to get an email about his upcoming live album, In Person & On Stage , to be released on May 25th on Oh Boy Records . Here's a taste: mp3: John Prine - Long [...]
This puts it all into perspective, doesn't it? This is a photograph of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry , taken earlier today. My heart goes out to the folks out east dealing with the floods. Thanks to Bon Iver's tweeting the news broke a few weeks ago that a John Prine Tribute album was on the way. Today Mr. Vernon (or whoever handles the tweeting on his end) posted the link to pre-order the album, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows . The album hits the shelves on June 22 and features one hell of a tracklist/lineup: [...]

Several years back a friend and trusted mentor handed me a crappy, low-bias cassette with John Prine scrawled on it in ballpoint pen. "It's incredible," he said, before adding, "he's a mailman." In actuality, Prine had long since hung up the USPS cap, but my dear friend was spot on regarding the quality of the record. Prine's self-titled debut is a songwriting masterpiece, alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, with a sprawling cast of stoners, loners and Marines with boners sure to make Sherwood Anderson proud. On May 25th, the fine folks at [...]
