I didn't know how I felt about this song when I first pressed play, but as it continued I found myself liking it more and more. I guess you could say it "came around" on me. Bad joke. Ralston comes out with a burst of energy from the very start, and when the chorus hits the ooh-aahs can't help but make me smile. I received my education from Haffa's Fine Used Records in Athens, Ohio. In that small, grimy basement store, I learned the passion, joy, despair and the cold hard realities of buying and selling used vinyl. I discovered Miles Davis , Tom Waits and the cutout bin there. It was a beautiful way to kill that hour [...]

Nearly three full years since last we heard from him with 20082s 'White Spiders', he appears like a mirage with two alternate universe classics. Jesus Christ may be the most daring A-side we have ever heard with it's drones, screeches, and clanging recalling the glory of the Velvet Underground. The B-side is an alarmingly gorgeous New Orleans heart breaker entitled A Marigny Christmas . Both songs feature the downright spectacular drumming of New York's Deric Dickens. The red and white 73 is available as a website exclusive, the single is also available on digital at all good [...]
Some of you asked what happened to the S-25 Mix for this past Sunday. Sorry, folks, we've been so busy with the holidays that we had to skip the S-25 for this past week. Hopefully, this collection of new Christmas songs, most of which are original or covers of traditional Christmas songs, will make up [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Did this once before with North Carolina bands , but Florida is deep and wide. So all of the bands have the qualifier of "right now." There is no blood from surfers, no people that I'm against! and all of this is subject to change if Further Seems Forever gets back together in the next 24 hours... 5) Have Gun Will Travel Part St. Pete bar band, part Americana innovators, Have Gun Will [...]

John Ralston: "Ghetto Tested" I'm enjoying the recent wave of emo troubadours, now that Dashboard Confessional is pretty much out of the way. Guys like Ace Enders, Jon Nolan, even The New Amsterdams. There are a whole bunch of others and one of those is John Ralston . From Lake Worth, FL he took a similar road after his stint with Legends of Rodeo, a band I love. Their early Americana/alt-country/emo hybrid seemed foreign in 2002 but now seems almost commonplace. Ralston has embraced that ethic even more so with his solo releases, [...]

All credit on this one due to AP and the Columbus Public Library. Beautiful, sad songs abound on the album 2006 release 'Needle Bed' from Florida based singer/songwriter John Ralston. The entire record is well worth your time, but as I was listening to it for the first time yesterday I kept going back to the song I am sharing here...brilliant stuff. * 'Hang A Sign' MP3

Image: John Murphy Bloodthirsty Angels & The Terrible Trumpets - John Ralston "Bloodthirsty Angels & the Terrible Trumpets" borrows the language of Revelations to delineate a fraught relationship. And with its lonely echoed spaciousness, the song sounds like it was recorded in a wooden church -- some 17th century New England meetinghouse in the dead [...]

Thursday night in Philly promises to be a great one. The big name is Ted Leo & The Pharmacists . One of the mainstays of the East Coast punk scene, his songs are now a little more mainstream, but he still puts on one hell of a show. I saw him play at the ACL Fest in '06 and came away very impressed. Check him out at the Starlight Ballroom . Me and Mia Over at Johnny Brendas , [...]
Not quite the best picture of Ms. Van der Woodsen. And honestly not quite the best name either. The show made a point, as the books do, to make all the characters come from money with family names that sound like they would have inherited money. And although the show has a lot to do with teenage romance and love triangles, the issues of money, drug abuse, trust funds, social class stratification, and sex run rampant throughout the mix. And speaking of mixes, this is the only the second or third time I've had anything good [...]
John Ralston's "Fragile" from his album "Sorry Vampire." Originally from MPR: The Current Song of the Day on October 29, 2007, 10:00pm
This week, the Broken Dial mp3 Mixtape features new music from: Apes, Cass McCombs, Castanets, Cinemasophia, Cut Off Your Hands, David Singer,...
John Ralston has packed Sorry Vampire, his latest album, with enough sonic surprises so that the album will never sound the same twice. You can't pin him down to any one sound. His lyrics and vocal delivery are often compared to Elliott Smith for good reason, but the layers of sound on each track defy easy categorization. With some songs featuring over 20 vocal tracks, multiple drums, and a cacophony of collected sounds, you'd think the album would be a bit over done, but Ralston has managed to keep it real. [...]

I have entirely too much music in my inbox right now, so you guys are getting a nice EP today and a stuffed podcast tomorrow. In fact, the podcast may even run longer than usual so that I can get the artists into your ears before my folder fills up again and people start to get lost in the shuffle. Anyhow, commence the downloading! Enjoy. Tullycraft, John Ralston, Capgun Coup, Wooden Shjips, Seabear Please visit the site for more commentary and downloadable songs.
After a wonderful September stacked to the brim with great releases, one would think that October would pale in comparison. This week seems to prove otherwise, as there are some worthwhile albums to look out for. Starting off with my obvious choice, PJ Harvey's White Chalk - which i've held off listening to till tonight. I'll probably review this one later in the week, but i've mentioned it enough times here on the site for everyone to know what's in store with Polly Jean's new musical direction. Another release that i'm sure is up there for [...]

Starting tomorrow, KEXP is broadcasting from Chicago - tune in! photo by Allie Pasquier Another batch of worthwhile releases comes your way this week, and while there are very few breath-holders on the list, there are quite a few albums that you'll want to add to your ever-growing library. Topping the list for many music fans is Bruce Springsteen's return to E Street form with Magic . Siouxsie Sioux, who goes by just Siouxsie on her true solo debut, Mantaray , is sure to draw aging goths to the record [...]
