If you live in Ireland you'll know this song once you don't regularly fast forward through the ads. Over the last few years it has probably done more for domestic tourism than the Giant's Causeway and isn't it refreshing to see the tourist board's up north and down here using local talent to highlight our precious natural environment (that Heathers tune could do a few more perilous cliff walks mind you). 'Long May You Reign' will probably have been the height of John Shelley and the Creatures success though given that they have recently changed their name to Master & [...]
Part one of my best albums of 2010 counts down numbers 100 to 76.

Where else would you find three great alternative rock bands on the one bill for admission cost of a tenner? Sending kudos to Sarah Jane for a wonderful line-up. I'll be at this one I promise! Ireland's newest music festival is set to take place over the weekend of the 6th, 7th, and 8th of August in Fenagh, Co. Carlow. It's only ten minutes from where I used to live, so I'll have to pay the folks a visit that weekend, and head down to check out the festivities. There's a [...]

John, Shelly and the Creatures is not John Shelly and the Creatures. There's no John Shelly. Actually, I'm not sure if there's a John or a Shelly either. I definitely don't see it in the band lineup, but rumour has it, they're in Berlin somewhere. Anyhow, John, Shelly & the Creatures are the best band to come out of Northern Ireland this year (and that includes Two Door Cinema Club). Their debut album Dinosaur has just been self-released, and is highly worth checking out. It's a breezy pop album, with fantastic instrumentation throughout. The [...]

This looks like a fun festival in Donegal! Here's a cool version of 'Like A Virgin' by Mick Pyro at The Ruby Sessions:
The first thing always noted about John, Shelly and the Creatures is how their track 'Long May you Reign' features on the Discover Northern Ireland ads. You know the one. But there's more to this Belfast band than providing a folksy ambience to a montage of Ferris wheels and rope bridges. A lot more. And the proof is in their debut album Dinosaur . It opens with 'Blinded and Cross' with an intro that manages to be both distorted and melodic. Combining the simplicity of a solo mandolin and both hoarse and harmonious vocals, [...]

You may not realise it, but you've probably heard John, Shelly and the Creatures already; their song 'Long May You Reign' is featured in the current Discover Northern Ireland ad campaign. That tune is indicative of the knack they possess for writing instantly loveable music – a knack that has earned them widespread critical praise over the past 12 months and, more importantly, a growing legion of fans. The Belfast foursome recently completed work on their debut album, which is pencilled-in for a March release. They'll also be undertaking a nationwide tour which kicks-off next month. [...]
Twitter Tuesday is the new feature where I honour a tweet from the past week that impressed me or tickled my funny bone. I then find a link to a band or song to blog about! To kick the feature off in style here's a Tweet from the impressive Mannix Flynn [ http://twitter.com/mannixflynn ] ; "Ulster says no no no, but Iris says yes yes yes" Hailing from Northern Ireland John Shelly and the Creatures just narrowly missed out [...]

It was another case of State meets AU by the sea on Friday with the second of our ongoing series of gig collaborations at the Purty Loft in Monkstown. This time round the emphasis was on the AU camp, with Escape Act and John Shelly & The Creatures both making the trip down the M1 and through the tunnel, to join a bill topped off by Dubliners The Rags . Escape Act made their debut as a four piece and also threw a clutch of new tunes into the set, John [...]
Hot on the heels of last week's memorable Villagers, ASIWYFA and Alphastates triple bill comes the second State & Club AU collaboration, this time featuring two names from the AU part of the world alongside one of Dublin's finest. The Rags have been operating below the radar of late, readying their debut album for a release this summer. We've heard it and, believe us, it's worth the wait. Belfast's Escape Act , meanwhile, have been winning friends all over the shop with their absorbingly upbeat pop-rock and creative promotional tactics. The two bands are joined by [...]
State in conjunction with our friends in the North, AU kicked off the first of what we hope to be many excellent cross-border lineups on Friday night. Kicking things off in The Purty Loft in Monkstown was Conor O' Brien playing a solo show under his Villagers moniker. Not one to let himself be deterred by being on stage on his lonesome, he treated the crowd to some recently written material with the kind of talent that few can match right now. Conor was followed by a short set from local boy [...]
For many in the Irish music industry the lack of communication between the Northern and Southern scenes has long been the cause of astonishment, particularly when both areas are producing the most acclaimed and vibrant bands of recent years, despite the best efforts of the likes of Hard Working Class Heroes . It was a common cause for complaint at this year's UnConvention event in Belfast, that bands from the city and elsewhere found it impossible to make contacts in the South – something echoed by their counterparts in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and beyond. This [...]
This week's Day and Night section examines The Pirate Bay case in Sweden, Videos from White Stripes on Conan and a Donkumentary, Links to Photoshop Disasters and the odd but brilliant Sexy People plus new music from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Belfast bands John Shelly and the Creatures, Escape Act and Cashier no.9 (playing tomorrow night in Dublin, no excuses). This song by John Shelly and the Creatures is just bloody lovely and is soundtracking a Northern Ireland tourist board Advert. There's no better [...]
