John Southworth - "Human Cry" . I believe in the primacy of cups. Every liquid has its proper cup: wine has its goblet, soup has its bowl, saltwater has its sea. If one cup is not sufficient, we make another. We do not just pour wine onto the table. At home, I keep a cabinet full of cups, one for every substance, and I host many visitors. We toast and clink and sip, drinking from the proper cups, never spilling. But I do not have enough cups for my sadness. My sadness is too vast, or my cups are too [...]

John Southworth moves freely in the unknown. Maybe he's like a heated atom and under microscope there's some sort of pattern, but to the naked eye - and the naked ear - every creative expression seems like the result of a random collision. Southworth's songs are fueled by unconventional inspiration. Whether it be an obsession with subatomic particle accelerators or conventional, lo-fi emotional release, John's art exposes thoughts or techniques that (temporarily) consume him. His latest endeavor, SPIRITUAL WAR , was born from a [...]

by teepoo With Toronto finally getting snow, I wish I could say So Glad It's Finally Spring . This song just makes me dream of the future when spring actually does come. 2 more months, just 2 more months. Like all his music, John Southworth never fails to take you to a better place with a very down to earth song about the pleasant details of life. Stagnant is certainly not a word that can be applied to UK born, Montreal based singer, John Southworth . He's been writing songs for decades, constantly shifting his sound and forcing himself to move farther and farther away from his comfort zone. From avant guard poetic pop to jazz - all backed by theatrical performances and new identities - Southworth refuses to sacrifice vision for sales or stability. Last year, he and his band dove headlong into the sonic goulash that was Mama Tevatron ; a record that jumped from [...]

Today's song comes from the Canadian independent music journeyman John Southworth and his 6th full-length album "Mama Tevatron", released on October 13th of this year. The album marks a distinct shift in Southworth's discography, towards a much more minimalist brand of pop instrumentation; according to his press releases this makes for a more accessible sound, though I rarely hear people complain about not being able to get into his previous work. The song I chose to highlight from the album is the defiantly teeth-gritted wanderer I Get It Now , which is currently garnering the majority [...]

One way or another, I will be at the beach this weekend. I've got to, got to get away from the urban squalor outside my window. Whether it's a sunny day out at Deep Cove with a good book (I'm in between good books right now, having finished The Black Book earlier this week, and still on the waiting list for Mortal Causes --But I've got another Willeford book ready to go! It's fascinating how my mood worsens when I'm not reading something I enjoy.) and the New York Times Crossword Puzzle [...]
...other peoples, they have to work. Then We Came To The End , by Joshua Ferris is a book you would like. You of all people, sitting somewhere in an office, sneaking furtives glances at your favourite blog between coffee breaks. You've got Radio3 on in your cubicle, and you still have to lean into your desktop computer to hear it over the three other competing stations in your cubicle block. Across the orange felt divider, your coworker sings the wrong words along to Flo Rida. [...]

...that's how Abdominal introduces fellow Canuck rapper D-Sisive on the DJ Format track 3 Feet Deep and also when I first realized Abdominal was Canadian. Though really, the hockey reference in The Hit Song should have been a dead giveaway. Today's post is all about Abdominal and a bunch of other interconnected artists from in and around the Toronto music scene. The seeds for this post were planted when CBC Radio 3 started posting the archived streams from the show Fuse , wherein two musical acts are fused together [...]
