John Statz - Distance Some more beautiful, down-tempo midwestern folk coming at you. John Statz is a songwriter who has traveled all over the world to write, record, and perform and lucky for us he returned home to cut Old Fashioned which is due out January 24. It's hard to be wholly unique when working in such a time-worn genre as folk but the best new folk artists have learned that creating a singular sound is about subtlety and precision songwriting, not [...]
John Statz , a thoughtful, ramblin' Americana artist is accustomed to traveling around the world. In fact, he gains inspiration from places that aren't familiar.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

John Statz worked magic into "Old Old Fashioned" from Frightened Rabbit's 2008 album The Midnight Organ Fight and quite possibly made it better than the original. I cringe when saying that, but I think you might agree too. It's gone from that a hasty upbeat song to a slower and more delicate tune fit for actually waltzing across the carpet like the song suggests doing. I would curl up in this song, and pull a cozy blanket over us after I was done waltzing with it, if I could. Both versions have something very different but equally [...]

Give me the soft, soft static, with a human voice underneath It might seem sacrilegious for a Frightened Rabbit fan like myself to declare a cover of one of their songs better than the original but that's what I'm going to do here. John Statz has stripped the song down to its essence and melded it along with the songs around into an album that captures a nostalgia that the title implies. His cover of Old Old Fashioned appears on his new album, Old Fashioned , which is out [...]
Denver folksinger turns Frightened Rabbits' 'Old Old Fashioned' into a lullaby.

A quick update on our upcoming release over on Yer Bird Records from John Statz: its now streaming in full on our bandcamp page ! The album is due for release in two weeks (January 24th) and will have a limited CD release alongside the super futuristic digital versions that all the kids are talking about. The album is 10 tracks and includes some of the most honest rural Americana you will find (I am biased though...apparently). If you don't believe me, just take a listen to tracks like the banjo [...]

The Tree Ring @ San Diego Women's Club by Natalie Kardos . The Tree Ring top my list of top song obsessions for 2011. Frontman Joel P West also appears on the list. Song obsessions are those songs that your brain picks for you, those ear worms that get stuck in your head and have you singing them to yourself or going back to hit repeat on your ipod. I like the idea of reporting what my brain got stuck on each year. Here's the list of the songs that were stuck in [...]

The January release holds a special place in the ebb and flow of artistry; though it runs the real risk of being forgotten by the time it comes to make our year's end lists, it also finds the market just gearing up again after a spate of holiday absence and Christmas releases. Thanks to tip-offs and promos from the usual sources, our fresh eyes have spotted three albums - each one due to drop this month, all well worth watching for - plus a few bonuses on the event horizon. As always, read and click for [...]

As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [ Pt. 1 / Pt. 2 ], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though we watch the other coverbloggers carefully throughout the year, we are folkies first and foremost here at Cover Lay Down. And - as we noted atop our year's end mix - some of the [...]

We're desperately cramming in as much as we can this month - new stuff, our Twelve Days of Christmas feature, festive tunes, and shortly our Best Of The Year lists and guest posts. Consequently, all these tunes are deserving of more time and more space than we're giving them in this post, but rest assured there is a veritable feast of musical delights to get your ears around - dive in. Self-professed psychedelic cavemen, pounding out their primitive songs hastily in the garage, Thee American Revolution bathes in the fuzz of the proceedings and have filled their debut [...]

Lead off track from the soon to be released John Statz album has its official release today! The track is 'Distance' from the album 'Old Fashioned' due for full release on January 24th, 2012. If you are at all familiar with Statz, you will find the new material possibly a bit more refined and even a bit fuller than previous albums. The album itself is gorgeous, full of lazy prairie folk with a soft edge of good ol' Americana. Dig into the FREE DOWNLOAD 'Distance' now via Bandcamp HERE . If [...]
my friend john statz is about to start recording his fourth studio album, entitled old fashioned , and he's enlisting our help to get this project funded. in case you weren't aware, being an independent musician with no record label support is not all that lucrative and it's NOT cheap. in fact, it costs a lot of money. john is going to be working on this album with legendary producer bo ramsey (jeffrey foucault, calexico, the pines etc...) and he's started a kickstarter campaign to reach his funding goal. people, at the very least [...]

john statz has been 'teasing' about the budapest sessions EP for a little while now, and it's finally here. the six tracks are unreleased recordings that were born in budapest during john's first european tour in early 2009. really nice, mostly acoustic, lightly produced versions of great songs...some of which even feature local hungarian musicians playing along. i've loved statz's music ever since i wrote this post , and my feelings are no different in regards to this raw EP. even better, he resides in denver...the greatest place known to man, and the birthplace of some [...]

Ghost Towns is the fourth release from Madison based alt-country singer-songwriter John Statz "inspired by grimy, war-torn Balkan towns and dying, broken down American cities" the songs were largely conceived on the road during Stantz travels across the US and Europe in locations ranging from West Virginia to Hungary and Colorado to Bosnia-Herzegovina. For his first full band album Statz has collaborated with a bunch of Wisconsin based musicians including Blake Thomas, Adam Cargin , Jeremiah Nelson and Whitney Mann who provides sweet harmony vocals on my favourite track from the album The [...]

ok...i'll sneak in one more before i set out for the glorious place that is austin, texas. came across john statz on bandcamp (i should really put together a mix-tape of bandcamp finds...) and just really wanted to get these tracks out before i put vocal nerd rodeo behind for a few days. john statz is a fantastic americana / singer-songwriter currently poking around denver (my original home). i came across his most recent release, ghost towns , and bought it immediately. the whole thing is packed with tasty full-band americana / folk tracks that really fit [...]

Here at MM we get a lot of albums submitted for our listening pleasure via ReviewShine - an online method for putting bands and blogs together. Unfortunately we get so many submissions that we often can't/don't do them justice by giving them the listening time that they deserve - entirely our fault unfortunately. So we've spent the past couple of days making a concerted effort to spin some, if not all, of the submissions we have received and pick out a few bands and tracks that we think might appeal [...]

I've slowly been putting together this mixtape in preparation for my drive up to Madison, WI tonight. My wife and I have different musical tastes to say the least so in a way this set of tracks bridges the gap. More than anything though this mixtape was born of my desire to listen to nothing but the Bowerbirds in my car this week. I'm not sure why I had Bowerbirds on the brain, but it lead to a pretty enjoyable mixtape if I do say so myself. Enjoy the [...]
