VerseChorusVerse @ Unitarian Church by Kieran Frost [...]
In some ways, the Unitarian Church is the real star of tonight’s show, with both opening act and main attraction seem slightly in awe of their surroundings. It’s understandable, since how often does any musician get to perform on an altar with white marbled scrolls of the beatitudes for a backdrop, a marbled pulpit in the wings, and an audience sat on wooden pews? This greater intimacy makes it exceed even St. Canice’s Cathedral in Kilkenny as a sonic show setting virtually guaranteed to inspire wonderment, in both performers and, er, ‘congregation’. It certainly generates its own novelty value. [...]

John Vanderslice will embark on a UK/EU tour this month (dates below) in support of his eighth LP White Wilderness, released earlier this year on Dead Oceans. White Wilderness is a record like no other the cult San Francisco tunesmith has made before. Here are nine wildly impressive JV songs captured live over three days in a unique collaboration with the Magik*Magik Orchestra, a collective of classically trained musicians in the Bay Area led by artistic director Minna Choi. Never [...]
Friday in Raleigh marked the first full day for the Hopscotch Festival. With headliners set to take stage in the City Plaza, I started walking. From the get go I noticed that streets were way busier than they had been the night before. It seems most people viewed Thursday’s shows as a warm-up night for [...]

While Annie Clark has earned a lot of well-deserved acclaim as a songwriter and guitarist, she's also a brilliant reinterpreter of other artists' songs. From Big Black and INXS to Tom Waits and Dolly Parton, Clark has put her own distinct brand on everything from classic tracks to beloved obscurities since she burst onto the indie rock scene five years ago. To hold us over until the release of the new St. Vincent record, Strange Mercy , here are several of Clark's best cover songs from over the years.

One slice of Vanderslice not enough for you? Well here's two then. Both of which were recorded with the Magik*Magik Orchestra, a collective of classically trained musicians in the Bay Area led by artistic director Minna Choi. Check his latest album, 'White Wilderness', for more such delights. 'Sea Salt' 'The Piano Lesson'

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Earth w/ Mt. Eerie, Flap Sunday, September 11 The Earl - 488 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $12 ADV / $15 DOS / Purchase Tickets Even at the peak of their heaviest drone metal doom, Earth was about conjuring mood and atmosphere. Buried beneath all the crushing noise and the layers of fuzz and feedback, there were riffs — painstakingly slow, deliberate, monolithic — and a semblance of structure, but the music thrived on luring [...]

[We approach the Sunset Junction-less weekend with plenty of music options. Meanwhile, if you didn't catch it, the Times had a story today on the aftermath ...] Your Friday fodder: ► That Dog reunites for the first of two-sold-out shows at the Troubadour. You'd be surprised (or possibly not) how many "new" co-ed bands around L.A. remind me of That Dog in its heyday (1991-97). ► Deadmau5 does the second of four big nights at the Hollywood Palladium. On a cool night on July 26th at Cafe Du Nord, our favorite Bay Area solo-pianist songstress, Debbie Neigher provided an intimate record release show for friends and fans. While her jazzy pop melodies can be labelled as radio-accessible, her relationship-oriented lyrics can be unexpectedly salty (" What Say You Now " and " Daytime " are honest and disarmingly vulnerable). Even calming songs of lost friendship like " Wishbone " received a quiet and respectful response from the attentive audience, allowing Debbie to express herself freely without distraction. Debbie is not [...]

Hey! Thought we forgot about this, eh? Nah... Next time I leave the country for a month, I will also leave access to the hard drive where all my files are located. So we're still aiming to re-post all of the Blogophilia volumes by summer's end. Today we have volumes 5 & 6, which feature promotional MP3s available during May and June of 2009. As always, these are gapless mixes with cover art. These are only up for a limited time, so get them now! - [...]
Debbie Neigher - Eclectic Bay-area musician/songwriter John Vanderslice came out of production retirement to take the helm of this promising debut from fellow San Francisco singer/songwriter Neigher -- "the luckiest freak accident" she says of the collaboration // Release : Debbie Neigher (July 26) // Sounds like : intricately detailed, piano-based (sm)art/pop -- think Fiona, Regina as influences -- with a light, often jazzy touch, the ten tracks also utilize the Vanderslice connection to bring aboard the local Magic*Magic Orchestra for string arrangements...
