Teena Marie The passing of R&B singer/songwriter Teena Marie on the day after Christmas (and, recently, Captain Beefheart ) got us to thinking about these rock and roll tragedies, and how many of them happen during the holiday season. Otis Redding's plane crashed in December 1967, while John Lennon was gunned down in December 1980. James Brown passed on Christmas Day 2006, Beach Boy Dennis Wilson drowned a few days before New Year's 1984 and guitarist Randy California of Spirit disappeared in a California riptide on [...]

Didn't get a screener this week, so we're going to be a bit more raw and loose with the analysis of "Let Me Go." The theme this week is about family, and because this is True Blood we're talking about, it's certainly non-traditional -- and mostly dysfunctional. Some are just discovering family (shapeshifters Sam & Daphne; telepathes Sookie & Barry the bellboy), while others have been around for centuries (vampires and their makers). MaryAnn has her own family of sorts, and more than anyone, recognizes its importance. That's they she stirs the [...]

Johnny Ace - Pledging My Love ( buy ) (1954) It's been six months now that I'm running River's Invitation, and this blog is now dedicated to my main project of presenting the history of roots music, especially blues, country and folk music, from the beginning to the 1980s. In addition to this chronological pattern that may seem a little monotonous, I've decided to create some more categories, and another crazy project has come to life, as stupidly systematic as the first : an "A to Z" approach of our cherished genres [...]
Filed under: Twisted Tales Spinner.com : The young singer didn't want to release his first single under his given name, for fear that his father, a preacher, would object to his involvement with "the devil's music."

Founded in Houston in 1948, ACA Recording Studios was first known for its R&B recordings, a place where Johnny Ace and Lightnin' Hopkins cut a number of their sides along side lesser known artists who appeared on the Peacock and Duke labels. Within 10 years, Ray Doggett, Royce Porter and assorted country and rockabilly artists began to cut their records on ACA's Ampex mono recorder. The studio's founder, Bill Holford, continued to work into his seventies, mastering records on a home four-track long after ACA closed. Here's a sampling of some of the artists who recorded [...]

Time for another episode of grab bag. Every Friday you´ll get a mix of songs old and new that got me all excited during the past seven days. And that´s no mean feat I´ll tell you. This week´s batch includes the nearly forgotten folky Eric Von Schmidt, a fatal game of Russian roulette, some ´nederbeat´ from the Dutch Stones, and much much more. Enjoy the weekend! Let´s start with a song that matches the weather here at the moment. After a nice week of false spring it´s mighty cold [...]
