Johnny Adams, a name familiar to most anyone who has ever purchased a southern soul compilation, worked his magic last Friday night. An inspired choice, my friend spun Adams's Heart & Soul LP on wax the other night with a bottle of Jameson just before dinner. The album kicks off with one of the best [...]

MOVING ON AFTER RIC & RON The Last At Last Part 3 ended more or less with Eddie Bo leaving the Ric and Ron labels behind in 1962, due to dissatisfaction with his compensation and owner Joe Ruffino's reluctance to seek national distribution for the labels' product. Of course, Ruffino's subsequent death closed the business and underscored the wisdom of Eddie's decision. Soon thereafter, Bo cut a couple of records for At Last, a recently started subsidiary of A.F.O. (All For One) Records, headed by [...]

As I mentioned in my recent CD reviews, or as you may have otherwise learned by now, one of New Orleans best drummers, Wilbert 'Junkyard Dog' Arnold , passed away the day after Christmas. A long-time member of Walter 'Wolfman' Washington's Roadmasters and one of the founding members of the New Orleans Rhythm Conspiracy, he was only 53 and will be missed, not just by those who knew and loved him , but by all who were moved by his exemplary musicianship. One of many uniquely endowed New Orleans [...]

Starting yesterday, and continuing until it's all gone, lots of comics up for sale, dirt cheap ! I'll be adding more everyday, as I get the hang of it. So far I've got some classic Showcase Presents volumes up and there's more where that came from, but I'll be adding collected editions/graphic novels of Green Lantern, the Flash, JLA, Green Arrow, Queen & Country, Batman, Daredevil, Gotham Central (what? yeah!) and assorted other goodies. If there's anything you're curious about, hit me up. I'm hoping to organize some of my single issues into bundles, but that may take a [...]
Just got back to Los Angels after six weeks on the road and, brother, let me tell you it feels great to be home. Big thanks to AD contributor J. Neas for an excellent series of posts while I was out criss-crossing the country. As of this post its back to business as [...]

This week I'm back with more sessions from Malaco Studios in Jackson, MS, where, during the early 1970s, Wardell Quezergue produced/arranged many records for hand-picked New Orleans vocal talent such as King Floyd, Jean Knight, the Barons Ltd, and the artists featured today. The more I explore the music from that period and place, especially the earlier sides, the more I get a sense of the soulful, funky little assembly line Quezergue had going. With songs written primarily by his New Orleans team, sometimes known as Pelican Productions, he would create hooky, [...]
