A little over a year ago I wrote about two DVDs that Shout! Factory was putting out for the holidays: the Johnny Cash Christmas specials from 1976 and 1977. This year, they've come back strong and have released Johnny's Christmas specials from 1978 and 1979. As with the previous years, Johnny has an all-star support cast of musicians and comedians to help him bring the holiday cheer. The 1978 special was taped in Los Angeles (as opposed to Tennessee as the first two were), and definitely takes on a Hollywood sparkle to it. His [...]

Also known as "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", it was first released in 1935 but it's still as powerfull as ever. This intensely sad folky, gospel song about the death and funeral of a mother, sung by her child, is best represented when left sparse and solemn. It needs no fancy embellishments; it simply is stunning. It's been covered by numerous bands and artists, but my favorite is this beautiful rendition sung by June Carter Cash. Her almost crackly voice, accompanied by a single guitar, unveils the heartache and a sweet vulnerability that is very hard to feign. [...]

I'll admit to ignorance on this one: I didn't know Bob Dylan wrote, "It Ain't Me, Babe."I probably should've. All the signs are there. It's virtually the fraternal twin of my all-time favourite song of all-time, "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." Three verse/chorus structure, the detached, snarky tone, self-loathing, directional lyric...it's practically the same song. Hell, even the use of the word "babe" betrays the knowledge, as it's frankly quite rare to hear anyone else use that word seriously in melodramatic popular song (at least until Sonny and Cher co-opted it).Perhaps that's what makes the [...]

OK folks, Thanksgiving has passed, which means it is officially OK to play holiday music and watch Christmas programs on TV. That being said, if you're not all that excited to watch It's A Wonderful Life for the umpteenth time, here's your alternative: The Johnny Cash Christmas Special from 1976 . For those of you not aware, Johnny had his own television program from 1969 to 1971, and also produced several Christmas programs in the mid to late 70's. Thanks to Shout! Factory , these Christmas specials are now available on DVD. [...]
