He's already built up a loyal fanbase in the UK, and now he'll take on the task of making a name for himself in the US as Johnny Flynn is heading to America! He'll be hitting the road for the first time in the states with fellow Brit and Mercury Prize nominee Laura Marling. For our fellow Bostonians (or anyone who may be in the area), Johnny will be playing the ICC Church on September 13, and we want to send you there! Send us an e-mail and we'll pick a winner [...]

I know that I'm trailing a ways behind the crowd on Johnny Flynn , but I wanted to weigh in on his new album A Larum anyway. For me, both Flynn and the album remind me a lot of what was easily my favorite album of last year: Elvis Perkins' Ask Wednesday . Not so much with A Larum's opening track The Box , but definitely with the second, The Wrote & The Writ , both in tone as well as subject (listen to Perkin's It's Only [...]

This guy came across my desk the other day - Johnny Flynn. He's recently released his first EP and LP, Hong-Kong Cemetery and A Larum , which came out in late July. Flynn is a delight to listen to. Hailing from England, he and his band brings forth a fun and exciting sound that sounds like it comes from all over there place - there's some bluegrass and folk here. Lyrically, he's fun - there's a high level of storytelling here within the lyrics, which combined with the energy and somewhat off-kilter sound of this [...]

Well, we'll be back by the end of this week, back into a maelstrom of gigs. What the fuck am I going to do on Saturday? Go to see Johnny Flynn at Cabaret Voltaire? Sparrow & the Workshop at the Liquid Room? Or Eagleowl at the Scottish Scullery. I am going to be spread thinner than the veneer of desperately forced joy on a vegetarian's malnourished visage. I think I may even be doing a show for Fresh Air Radio that day, but I have no idea what about, as yet. So, what's happening on the busiest week of [...]
There is a scene around at the moment - one that you're likely to have encountered. The artists involved are saviours of a dying genre; the genre being Folk. What was once a dirty word, Folk is fast becoming cool again, and it's all thanks to innovators such as Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn, Mumford & Sons and of course, Noah And The Whale. All have done their bit to turn a tired and largely uninspiring music style into something beautiful and fresh. Now, Noah And The Whale bring forward their first full-length effort 'Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down' and [...]

LATITUDE FESTIVAL - Abby Jitendra Latitude Festival was never going to be one of those musical events where avant garde, noisy, punk or hip-hop musicians played and Sparked Debate. One can imagine riots breaking out across Middle England if, say, Jay Z, was announced as a headliner. White, middle-class twentysomethings would sharpen knives and talk of the festival being 'indie' and 'rock'- centric, that Rap had no place at such an event. Sigur Ros – Icelandic, slightly bland, atmospheric post rock – however, were perfect for the heaving masses. Friendly, awe-inspiring and 'nice'. [...]

When I interviewed the darling Laura Marling a few weeks ago , she mentioned the fact that she would be coming back out to the states with a few of her folk brethren, including one Johnny Flynn . Johnny has been busy himself, making preparations for his first full-length LP, A Larum due out July 29th on Lost Highway Records. It has been preceeded by a preview EP titled Hong Kong Cemetry . It's in a similar vein to Laura's brand of indie-folk, in the sense that it struts and stomps like few [...]

I'll apologise at the start for the lack of updates from me for the last month. Hectic doesn't even come close to summing up the last few weeks. There was the end of exams, followed by trying to earn some quick cash, followed by one amazing loved up week in Ibiza, then graduation. It's been tiring. Anyway, enough of the excuses. This compilation has been finished for a couple of weeks but I just haven't had time to upload all the tracks, which meant I couldn't let share it with you all. Onto the music. Here [...]
As-tu déjà rencontré l'amour? Je parle du grand Amour avec un grand "H"? Je croyais l'avoir trouvé... Mais... ... Il y a trois semaines, j'ai reçu mon double vinyl pop-up gatefold de Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit , "A larum"... Je l'attendais comme le lionel messie. Quand on attend tellement d'un disque, ou de l'amour, on est souvent déçu... Ça n'a [...]
Spiritualized Songs In A&E Buy MP3: Sitting On Fire Vetiver Thing Of The Past Buy MP3: Roll On Babe Johnny Flynn A Larum Buy MP3: Leftovers Album of the week is no close run thing this week, with Spritualized's Songs In A&E beating everything by some considerable distance. It's a beautiful, personal record, following Jason Pierce's brush with death back in 2005. This is the group's best [...]
The world has held great Heroes, As history-books show within; But never a name to go down to fame Compared with that of Flynn! The clever men at Oxford Realized, much to their chagrin, They can't make modern yet traditional folk as well As intelligent Mr. Flynn! He's unlike the Devendras and Vetivers, Yet there's plenty of violin. Closer to Oldham, Will, or Alasdair Roberts, It's the great musician Flynn! The army all saluted As they marched on towards Berlin. Was it Borrell? Or Doherty? No. It was Mr. Flynn. The Queen [...]

Clockwise from top, Johnny Flynn drunk at Christmas, with younger sister Lillie who sings in Johnny's band, with Lillie and their nan, having open heart surgery on Holby City There's good posh (Stephen Fry) and there's bad posh (Paris Hilton), but thankfully JOHNNY FLYNN seems to be something of a lovable rogue. Born in South Africa and brought up in Britain, the 24-year-old has already made a remarkable number of career moves for a [...]
So maybe there is something to this Folk revival after all. Certainly a few minutes in the company of Johnny Flynn (and the Sussex Wit) should have you clambering for more. His cites Shakespeare among his influences but thankfully what emerges is altogether less taxing on the grey matter. Perhaps he keeps that particular wordsmith aside for his acting pursuits. Up to now all that has emerged is

As a rule I rarely fall for blondes or neo-folk musicians, but Johnny Flynn is so incredible both physically and artistically that I'm willing to make an exception. Hailing from the United Kingdom, the young troubadour already has friends in high places-- Young and Lost Club will release his first single in February, Transgressive Records has signed on as managers, while artists like Emmy the Great continually champion his merits. It's understandable, because his early demos are incredible and his live performances are spellbinding (look [...]

The other week I was in Rough Trade buying some music when I stumbled across a small pile of CDs which looked like they might be free. Sure enough they were, and never one to resist an interesting-looking freebie I happily snapped it up. It intrigued me because it was a folk CD - Folking it Up - compiled by DJs du jour Queens of Noize , denizens of the London indie clubs, and now with their own weekly show on BBC 6Music . I hadn't really thought of them as [...]
